WS man arrested for smoking pot with teen

On Jan 15, 2019 Ware Shoals Police arrested a man after receiving a tip that he was inside a residence doing drugs with someone underage.

Jeremy Allen Fleming, 36 of 38 Dairy St, Ware Shoals, SC was arrested and charged with simple possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

South Carolina Issuing February SNAP Benefits Early

The South Carolina Department of Social Services (DSS) will be issuing February Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits early as a result of the federal government shutdown.

SNAP recipients who received a benefit in January and are eligible for ongoing benefits in February will have their February benefits available on their EBT card Jan. 17, 2019. This will affect an estimated 231,000 households.

Lander Professor Gets PAL Award

Lander University Professor of Teacher Education Dr. Lee Vartanian recently received a PAL Award, recognizing him as a Professor for Affordable Learning.

    The award, conferred by the Partnership Among South Carolina Academic Libraries (PASCAL), is part of the South Carolina Affordable Learning (SCALE) initiative, that seeks to reduce the cost of higher education by promoting the use of low-cost and no-cost learning materials.

    Vartanian said that he has “noticed an uptick in the past 10 years or so in textbook prices.”

EHS wrestling finished 8th in Dreher Invitational
The wrestling team wrestled in the Dreher Invitational this weekend and placed 8th out of 34 teams. The team had 4 wrestlers place at the tournament. Koby Moore and Noah Moore placed 1st and Drew Adams and Cameron Gordan placed 4th.

Lander University Funding Requests Center Upon Student Safety and Building Renovations

As state legislators began their new session, Lander University President Richard Cosentino met with members of the Ways and Means Higher Education Subcommittee on Tuesday, Jan. 8, to request state funding for several campus needs.

The requests center upon increasing measures for the safety and security of Lander students, faculty and staff; completing much-needed repairs to state-owned buildings; renovating a student center to accommodate a rapidly increasing student population; and expanding the infrastructure for a nursing degree program that has experienced steady growth for more than 20 years.

Baby Gabe Open Heart 5K and Mile Run Jan 26

Come out and help support Baby Gabe by participating in the Baby Gabe Open heart 5K and Mile Run on Saturday, Jan 26, 2019 at 702 Hunters Creek Blvd in Greenwood SC.

5K and 1 mile fun run, suitable for all ages and abilities. Run, or walk, all are welcome!  Timing will be done by microchips. Road course. All proceeds go to support the surgery and recovery of Baby Gabe Wieneke, who will need open heart surgery shortly after birth to correct a heart defect, called Transposition of the Great Arteries. This is a condition where the hearts 2 main arteries are opposite where they should be, and deprive the body of oxygen rich blood circulation.
