Greenwood man arrested for attempted murder

Greenwood City Police have arrested a man for shooting at another man near New Haven Apartments on Oct 31, 2018 around 10:45 p.m.

Taroyja Jay Middleton, 37 of 207 New Market Street, Greenwood was arrested and charged with attempted murder.

According to the report, the two men were arguing over another person who was arrested and charged with a crime.  After the argument escalated, Middleton retrieved a gun and fired several shots at the victim. The victim then retrieved a gun, as he was a licensed carrier, from his waistband and returned fire.

The victim told police that Middleton was wearing a red & white wig as it was Halloween.

One officer arriving at the scene noticed a truck leaving the area but was unable to locate it for a time.  But later while the officer was attempting to contact someone at the apartment complex, noticed the truck following his unmarked patrol car.  The truck suddenly cut in front of the officer and Middleton got out of the truck and approached the officer’s vehicle. Middleton was unaware that it was an officer that he had cut off.

The officer then got out of the car and identified himself.  They then searched Middleton’s vehicle and found the red & white wig.  They also noticed Middleton chewing on something and made his spit it out.  It was a clear plastic bag containing what appeared to be drugs.

Middleton was arrested and transported to the Greenwood County Detention Center.
