On the morning of Thursday, December 6th, people will likely be lined up in anticipation of the doors to the new Goodwill store and Job Connection swinging open at 9am.   Many will be searching for Goodwill’s signature deals on everything from clothing to furniture and hoping to leave the store with a handful – or, in some cases, several carts full – of gently used products.  Others, however, will be looking for something a little different, something that many people don’t necessarily realize can be found at Goodwill:  a job.

The new location at 1306 Montague Ave in Greenwood is the first Goodwill location in the county.  It will feature a retail store, a drive-through donation center, and access to Goodwill’s job training and placement services through the Goodwill Job Connection.

Supported by funds generated through the sale of donated merchandise, Goodwill Job Connections will provide free assistance to help job seekers connect with potential employers and find permanent employment.  Services will include access to resources like computers and the internet, fax machines, telephones, and job leads and referrals.

A trained employment specialist will be on site to assist individuals with their job search.  Additional services available through Goodwill Job Connections include resume development, interviewing skills, and classes such as Basic Computer Literacy.

Goodwill Job Connections plans also to serve as a resource for employers.  Job Connections intends to connect employers with pre-screened applicants, provide space for on-site interviewing, or organize and conduct Job Fairs to help fill open positions.

Job seekers may also be referred to one of Goodwill’s training programs, where they can learn skills needed for a career in Retail, Food Service, Manufacturing, Contact Center, or as a Certified Nurse Aide.

A grant from the Duke Energy Foundation, totaling $49,992, will fund job training for 24 Greenwood County residents and equip them for employment.  The training will be coordinated through Goodwill’s Job Connection in Greenwood.

“Duke Energy is excited to partner with Goodwill Industries in this workforce readiness effort, especially since it will target the Lakelands area, where unemployment remains higher than the state and national averages,” said Duke Energy District Manager Theo Lane.  “We expect this partnership to produce real economic results for both the participants and the region.”

Goodwill Industries of Upstate/Midlands South Carolina desires to help people become independent through education and training leading to employment.  According to Goodwill Industries, last year, Goodwill assisted 38,892 people in their quest for independence and created a potential economic impact of over $75 million through the wages of the 7,282 people placed into employment.

I'm so happy to see Goodwill come to Greenwood. They will be good for our community.
