Thanks for reading GwdToday - Everyday!

When the Lander University Dance Company takes the stage on Sunday and Monday, Nov. 24 and 25, it will be joined by students from the ACTS Magnet School at Brewer Middle School in Greenwood.

Dr. Hannah Park, assistant professor of dance at Lander and director of the Dance Company, said 15 dancers from Brewer, all seventh-graders, will perform a contemporary jazz selection based on the science fiction novel and motion picture “Hunger Games.”  Sheri Brewington, a dance educator who received a master’s in elementary education at Lander, is their teacher.

According to the school’s description, ACTS at Brewer accepts a limited number of talented students in fifth through eighth grades, including them in an academically challenging arts integrated program.

Park said having them in the program represents an intergenerational approach. “All children deserve an opportunity to dance, to learn how to maneuver their bodies properly and avoid injury.
Park said the theme of the Dance Company’s overall performance is “The Three Es: Extremities, Extensions and Evocations.” It will feature various works by Park and advanced choreographers who were selected through an adjudication process that took place early in this semester.

The company includes 30 Lander students who have had dance training and are majoring in diverse areas, including theatre, education, exercise science, nursing, business and foreign languages. Park said they each share a passion for dance. Dr. Andre Lubecke, a professor of mathematics at Lander who has studied dance and is a member of the troupe, will appear with students in a hip-hop production.

The students will perform a variety of dance styles, including solos, duets and other smaller groups. Park, herself, will perform a solo.

The production will be held in Lander’s Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center Auditorium beginning at 8 p.m. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend.
