Thanks for reading GwdToday - Everyday!

Connie Edwards, of Greenwood, president of the People to People, International (PTPI) chapter in Greenwood, has been named the first Peace Poet Laureate of South Carolina by the international PTPI headquarters in Kansas City, Mo.

Edwards is the founder of the annual Peace Studies Conference hosted by Lander University. The laureate award recognizes her work in the peace arena including organizing the peace conference.

A graduate of Indiana University, she is a retired teacher and businesswoman. She is also a performing poet, writer and activist whose new book, “Shadows Dark and Light,” will be published in May. The book features social commentary and her remembrances of growing up in Southern Indiana’s coal mining region.

She has performed her award-winning poetry in several public venues, developing a loyal fan base. She describes her work as ranging from political and social commentary to humorous narratives. She said, “Some poems dance. Mine just shuffle across the stage.”
