Hodges Elementary kicked off their school-wide water drinking campaign with the installation of a brand new bottle filling station! The new station is a special addition to a water fountain that is in the main hallway of the school.

Lander Journalism Professor Among Top 25 Named to National Communicators List

While delivering his State of the University address, Lander President Richard Cosentino said, “Our secret is our faculty, but they’re no longer a secret.”

That sentiment is reflected by the news that Dr. Robert F. Stevenson, professor of journalism at Lander, has been named to the Top 25 Communications Professors You Should Know list.

Red Cross and Greenwood firefighters collaborate on fire safety program

Members of the Greenwood Fire Department and staff and volunteers from the American Red Cross Upstate Chapter joined forces on Saturday. Sept.24, and installed 48 free smoke alarms in homes in five Greenwood neighborhoods. The project was part of the Home Fire Campaign conducted by the Red Cross and its partners to teach people how to be prepared for and protect themselves against a house fire. This was the second so-called “fire alarm blitz” in Greenwood.

JDLHS Alumni to Gather Oct. 8

Alumni from points near and far will gather Saturday, Oct. 8 for the 54th Alumni Homecoming and Reunion at John de la Howe School.

The special day begins with registration starting at 9 a.m. in L.S. Brice School on the John de la Howe campus. Activities run until 5:30 p.m. and include tours, food, games, a John de la Howe Alumni Association business meeting, a cookout and time for former students to share and “catch up.”

D50 Purchases New Band Uniforms from Sale of Property Proceeds

Last year at a Greenwood School District 50 Board of Trustees meeting, Assistant Superintendent for Business David Loadholt announced that the district would use the land sale of the property at 133 Merrywood Drive to enhance the related arts programs in the district.

One of the items that the district used the proceeds for was new band uniforms for Emerald and Greenwood High School. The uniforms will be worn during Friday night football games and band competitions.

Congratulations to the Cambridge Academy girls golf team. They traveled to Greer and topped Oakwood Prep and Dorman on Monday. Grace Clegg shot lowest overall score leading her team to victory.

Lander Fishing Teams to Compete

Four college fishing teams from Lander University are hauling their boats across the state line and traveling to Chickamauga Lake, Tennessee in hopes of reeling in prize money to support their student organization.

PTC Sponsors Fall Kick-off and Club Fair

Students at Piedmont Technical College were treated to a Fall Kick-off and Club Fair recently.  Associate in Arts student Tavaious Cunningham of Greenwood, right, gets information on registering to vote from Lisa Toland, dean of off campus instruction and department head for social sciences. The annual event welcomes students back to class and introduces them to the clubs and organizations available on campus.

Lander Performing Arts to Kick-off Season with Duo Astralis on Sept. 27

Lander University’s Department of Music will kick off the 2016-2017 performing arts season on Tuesday, Sept. 27 with an innovative performance by Duo Astralis. The evening performance begins at 8 p.m. in the Barksdale Recital Hall, room CC-250 of the Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center.

Lander University to host College Night on Oct. 4

Area high school students and their parents are invited to attend College Night on Tuesday, Oct. 4, from 6-7:30 p.m. in Finis Horne Arena on the campus of Lander University.

Prospective college students will have the opportunity to interact with recruiters from more than 40 colleges and universities across the state.  Representatives will be on hand to answer questions about the application process, admissions requirements, programs of study, tuition fees, campus housing and more. Financial aid counselors will be available to offer advice on how and when to apply for assistance to help cover the cost of college expenses.

Lander University’s opening convocation, held Wednesday in the Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center Auditorium, began with the announcement by second-year President Richard Cosentino that enrollment is up 2.5 percent, boosted by one of the largest freshman classes in the history of the university.

GHS 1976 40th Class Reunion

Greenwood High Class of 1976 will be having their 40th Reunion the weekend of October 7-9. Friday night they will be tailgating at the game starting at 6pm. Saturday will be family day at Sweet Tea's Ranch (1103 McCormick Hwy) from 11:30-2:00pm. That night will be a dance at the American Legion (806 Calhoun Ave) 8:00 until.  Sunday morning church at Main Street Methodist at 11.

Lander Stages Second 'Survival Job Fair'

Lander University Director of Career Services Amanda Morgan and Residence Life Coordinator Sonny Nodine take a look at the names of students expressing interest in becoming a resident assistant for the office of housing at this year’s Survival Job Fair. Nine departments participated in this year’s event, which assists students in finding part-time jobs to help them meet their expenses.

Greenwood School District 50 will hold a Senior Night for both EHS & GHS seniors on Monday, August 29 at Emerald High School from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.  This will be an informational meeting and all seniors and their parents are invited to attend.  The meeting will begin in the gym promptly at 6.

ACT Report Shows Improvement Opportunities for South Carolina Students

Columbia, SC – Today, ACT released its 2016 Condition of College and Career Readiness Report for the Class of 2016. South Carolina’s 2016 high school graduates earned an overall composite score of 18.5 compared to an average of 19.8 in the twenty states that require the test.
