Exploring the world of engineering is part of summer break for some local teenagers participating in the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics summer engineering camp (CREATEng), taking place this week at Lander University.

Westview Middle School tryouts for football & volleyball

Westview Middle School will begin football try-outs August 8th-11th from 4:30-6:00.  All rising 7th and 8th graders wishing to try out must have a current physical dated after April 1, 2016 and a Concussion form signed by both the student and parent/guardian.

Volleyball try-outs also begin on August 15-18 from 3:30-5:00.  All rising 7th and 8th grade girls wishing to try out must have a current physical dated after April 1, 2016 and a Concussion form signed by both the student and parent/guardian.
Students need to wear shorts, tee shirts and tennis shoes.

Russell receives Frank Wardlaw Memorial Scholarship
Piedmont Technical College heating, ventilation and air conditioning technology student and Greenwood resident Tipton Russell recently received the Frank Wardlaw Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is available to an HVAC student with preference given to a student from Troy or McCormick County. Second preference is given to an adult student returning due to a career change.

Lander's Kermit Smith named Appalachian State head baseball coach

BOONE, N.C. – Kermit Smith, a 15-year head coaching veteran, has been named the 13th head baseball coach at Appalachian State University, director of athletics Doug Gillin announced on Thursday.

Smith, who comes to Appalachian State after seven seasons as the head coach at Lander University in Greenwood, S.C., replaces Billy Jones, whose employment was discontinued in May.

Sansbury receives Self Regional Healthcare PTC Golf Classic Scholarship

Piedmont Technical College student and Greenwood resident Kim Sansbury, right, was recently awarded the Self Regional Healthcare PTC Golf Classic Scholarship at the college’s annual scholarship luncheon. Sansbury, a medical assisting student, is congratulated by Mark Hyatt of Self Regional Healthcare. The scholarship is funded through an annual golf tournament held each spring and selection is based on academic achievement and financial need.

Cook, an administrative office technology student, is pictured with Kara McAlister, scholarship committee member. The Emerald Chapter IAAP offers a scholarship to a student in the Administrative Office Technology associate degree program. Other criteria includes academic achievement and financial need.

Harrison receives Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship

Piedmont Technical College student and Greenwood resident Yolanda Harrison, right, recently received the Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship at the college’s annual scholarship luncheon. Harrison, an administrative office technology student, is congratulated by Vernessia Wideman, Phi Theta Kappa advisor. Supported through the fundraising events of the PTC’s Omega Chi Chapter, the scholarship is awarded annually to active members. Phi Theta Kappa is the international honor society for students of two-year colleges.

This scholarship is awarded to a student that does not qualify for State or Federal assistance and demonstrates leadership skills, academic achievement and financial need.

Piedmont Technical College student and Greenwood resident Charles Cooley, left, recently received the Mr. “B” Automotive Technology Scholarship at the college’s annual scholarship luncheon. Cooley, an automotive technology student, is congratulated by Gerald Sartin, automotive technology instructor. The scholarship is awarded annually to an automotive technology student with a GPA of 3.25 or greater and financial need.

Lander names Adam Weyer Assistant AD for Sports Medicine

Adam Weyer has been named Lander University's Assistant AD for Sports Medicine it was announced today by Athletic Director Jeff May.

Weyer, who joins Lander after working a combined 10 years as head athletic trainer at nearby Erskine College, replaces Kent Atkins, who is now the Bearcats' Assistant AD for NCAA Compliance and Internal Operations. Weyer also served a combined six years as an athletic trainer in Major League Baseball’s Cincinnati Reds’ and Arizona Diamondbacks’ organizations.

Instant Admission Days Continue

Piedmont Technical College is taking Instant Admission Day on the road.

Instant Admission Days have provided students the opportunity to complete most, if not all, of the requirements for enrollment. During the month of July, these opportunities are being made available to students in Edgefield, McCormick and Newberry counties as well as Greenwood.

Seven Piedmont Technical College students recently received the Butler Derrick Scholarship at the college’s annual scholarship luncheon.

The scholarship, named for Congressman Butler Derrick, is awarded annually to associate degree students in high academic standing.

Two Piedmont Technical College students recently received the Nora Wells Cooner Scholarship at the college’s annual scholarship luncheon. Six Piedmont Technical College students were awarded the Capsugel Scholarship at a recent scholarship luncheon.

Students learn about the complex world of forensics

A group of Greenwood-area students received a weeklong introduction to the field of forensic science and how it helps law enforcement agencies solve crimes. The program was part of the annual Duke Energy’s Summer Institute hosted by Lander University.

Walden receives Lena Wood Warren Scholarship

Piedmont Technical College student and Greenwood resident Jessica Walden, left, was recently awarded the Lena Wood Warren Scholarship at the college’s annual scholarship luncheon.

Walden, an associate degree nursing student, is congratulated by Lena Wood Warren. This scholarship is available to a PN or ADN nursing student who has completed at least one semester in the nursing program. The recipient has a 3.0 GPA or above, has an outstanding clinical performance as determined by clinical instructor, shows financial need and demonstrates leadership abilities.
