Cambridge Academy Girl's Golf finish sixth in state tourn

The Cambridge Academy girl’s golf team traveled to Orangeburg on October 18th to compete in the SCISA State golf tournament.  The team finished in 6th place overall.  The Orangeburg Country Club hosted teams from 14 different schools after the original tournament was postponed due to hurricane Matthew.

Afternoon Locked Down Lifted at Three Schools

This afternoon, law enforcement received a threatening phone call at one of our schools. As a precaution, Greenwood School District 50 immediately placed Greenwood High School, Pinecrest Elementary School, and G. Frank Russell Technology Center on lockdown and began working closely with law enforcement to address the situation.

Lander presents recital with vocalist Clare Henry on October 25

Lander University’s Department of Music will present a recital featuring vocalist Clare Henry on Tuesday, October 25, at 8 p.m. in the Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center Auditorium.

Henry will perform selections in Italian, French, German and English by composers Bach, Mozart, Schubert and Puccini. Admission is free and open to the public. The event is FALS-approved for Lander students.

Coaches for Emerald High School, Greenwood High School and Palmetto Christian Academy are proud to announce the 2016 All County Swim Team.  Coaches agreed upon the top 12 Swimmers  - 6 boys and 6 girls - by their performance in the 2016 All County Swim Meet.

NS Students receive motivation by Dr. Boykin
Ninety Six High and Edgewood Middle Schools were encouraged today in a school-wide assembly by Dr. Craig Boykin a motivational speaker who told the students to reach for the stars no matter the circumstances that surround their lives.

The conclusion of the speech was that education is the ultimate key to success no matter what side of the track in Ninety Six, South Carolina your family came from. Dr. Boykin resides in Montgomery, Alabama.

PTC Thanks Area Officials with BBQ

The Piedmont Technical College Area Commission recently hosted a barbecue dinner at Bermuda’s at The Links at Stoney Point, for local, state and federal legislators to raise awareness of PTC’s vital role in the workforce development of South Carolina’s Lakelands region. The event was attended by more than 100 people, including legislative officials, the Piedmont Technical College Area Commission, PTC Foundation Board members and members of the PTC faculty and staff.

On Monday, September 26th, District 50’s United Way campaign leaders gathered at the United Way Center of Community Care to celebrate the start of another campaign.

NSHS receives Blood Connection Donation

Ninety Six High School earned a $500 scholarship to be used at their discretion for total amount of blood donated by students, faculty and staff at Ninety Six High School during blood drives within the academic school year.

Way to go Ninety Six High School!  The Renaissance Class sponsors the Annual Blood Drives at Ninety Six High School.

Lander Stages Graduate School/Career Fair
Lander University student Kaitlyn Howard, a psychology major from Charleston, signs up to receive mailings from Winthrop University Graduate School at the Graduate School/Career Fair held recently at Lander. 

Assisting Howard was Winthrop Graduate School Admissions Coordinator Kay Barringer. A total of 15 businesses and schools participated in the event.

While delivering his State of the University address, Lander President Richard Cosentino said, “Our secret is our faculty, but they’re no longer a secret.”

That sentiment is reflected by the news that Dr. Robert F. Stevenson, professor of journalism at Lander, has been named to the Top 25 Communications Professors You Should Know list.

Red Cross and Greenwood firefighters collaborate on fire safety program

Members of the Greenwood Fire Department and staff and volunteers from the American Red Cross Upstate Chapter joined forces on Saturday. Sept.24, and installed 48 free smoke alarms in homes in five Greenwood neighborhoods. The project was part of the Home Fire Campaign conducted by the Red Cross and its partners to teach people how to be prepared for and protect themselves against a house fire. This was the second so-called “fire alarm blitz” in Greenwood.

JDLHS Alumni to Gather Oct. 8

Alumni from points near and far will gather Saturday, Oct. 8 for the 54th Alumni Homecoming and Reunion at John de la Howe School.

The special day begins with registration starting at 9 a.m. in L.S. Brice School on the John de la Howe campus. Activities run until 5:30 p.m. and include tours, food, games, a John de la Howe Alumni Association business meeting, a cookout and time for former students to share and “catch up.”

D50 Purchases New Band Uniforms from Sale of Property Proceeds

Last year at a Greenwood School District 50 Board of Trustees meeting, Assistant Superintendent for Business David Loadholt announced that the district would use the land sale of the property at 133 Merrywood Drive to enhance the related arts programs in the district.

One of the items that the district used the proceeds for was new band uniforms for Emerald and Greenwood High School. The uniforms will be worn during Friday night football games and band competitions.

Congratulations to the Cambridge Academy girls golf team. They traveled to Greer and topped Oakwood Prep and Dorman on Monday. Grace Clegg shot lowest overall score leading her team to victory.

Four college fishing teams from Lander University are hauling their boats across the state line and traveling to Chickamauga Lake, Tennessee in hopes of reeling in prize money to support their student organization.

Students at Piedmont Technical College were treated to a Fall Kick-off and Club Fair recently.  Associate in Arts student Tavaious Cunningham of Greenwood, right, gets information on registering to vote from Lisa Toland, dean of off campus instruction and department head for social sciences. The annual event welcomes students back to class and introduces them to the clubs and organizations available on campus.
