Piedmont Middle College Produces First Graduates

As the Class of 2014 celebrated their graduation from high school, 10 students from Ninety Six High School and McCormick High School were also earning an Associate in Arts degree from Piedmont Technical College. The students – five from Ninety Six and five from McCormick – were enrolled in the Piedmont Middle College.

SPARTANBURG, SC - Nalysha Adams of Greenwood graduated from the University of South Carolina Upstate during spring commencement

The University of South Carolina Upstate recognized 581 May graduates during commencement exercises held May 6, 2014 on the Quad behind the John C. Stockwell Administration Building.

A noisy physics demonstration for school children at Lander

The area behind Lander University’s Science Center took on the appearance of Cape Canaveral for a short time on the morning of July 10 when a trash can rocketed high above the campus as part of a controlled demonstration showing what can happen when pressure builds in a confined space.

Students looking to enroll in the Piedmont Technical College respiratory care program will notice changes for the fall semester. The curriculum has been revised to better accommodate the advances in the health care system and to streamline the path of students in the program.

Katrina Gonzalez of Greenwood named to the Spring Term Dean's List at Choate Rosemary Hall

Wallingford, CT - Katrina Gonzalez, daughter of Dr. Todd M. Gonzalez and Dr. Evangeline G. Gonzalez of Greenwood, was named to the Spring Term 2014 Dean's List at Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford, Connecticut. Choate Rosemary Hall is an independent secondary school enrolling 865 boarding and day students from 40 states and D.C., and 40 countries.

Clinton, S.C. - The Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education Board of Directors has granted full accreditation status to the Doctor of Pharmacy program at Presbyterian College. ACPE is the national agency for accrediting pharmacy education programs.

Child Early Reading Development and Education Program (CERDEP)
The Greenwood School District 50 will offer full-day 4-year-old kindergarten this year under the South Carolina Child Early Reading Development and Education Program (CERDEP). The South Carolina legislature created the Child Development Education Pilot program in 2006 to provide full day 4K for high poverty districts in South Carolina.

Academic Honor Students Recognized for 2014 Spring Semester

Piedmont Technical College students who had outstanding academic accomplishments during the 2014 spring semester have earned inclusion on the President’s List. To be named to the list, students must be full time and earn a term GPA of 4.00. Students will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the college president.

Lander alumni group plans a festive Hawaiian luau

Lander University’s Cambridge Hall will take on the look and feel of a tropical paradise when the Lander Alumni Association and the Greenwood Tower Club host a Hawaiian luau on Saturday, Aug. 9, from 7 to 10 p.m. The event will raise money for the club’s project fund and Lander’s Alumni Scholarship Fund.

Dr. Ryan Floyd, an assistant professor of history at Lander University, has added a second prestigious faculty award to his academic credentials. Floyd received the 2014 Young Faculty Scholar Award, which follows by two years his selection for the university’s Young Faculty Teaching Award.

PC School of Pharmacy Professor Receives Bowl of Hygeia Award
Clinton, S.C. –Presbyterian College announced today that Dr. Gene Reeder of the Presbyterian College School of Pharmacy (PCSP) has received the Bowl of Hygeia Award by the 138th annual South Carolina Pharmacy Association (SCPhA). 

Established in 1958, the Bowl of Hygeia Award recognizes one pharmacist each year from participating states for his or her record of outstanding civic leadership and his or her work to encourage fellow pharmacists to take active roles in their communities. Dr. Reeder is the 2014 South Carolina recipient.

Lander students earn academic honors

Lander University announces its President’s List, Dean’s List and Freshman Honors for spring semester 2014. Undergraduates who have earned a grade point average (GPA) of 4.0 out of a possible 4.0 are on the President’s List. Those with a GPA of 3.5 to 3.9 are on the Dean’s List, while freshmen with a GPA between 3.0 and 3.49 earn Freshman Honors.

Lander board acts on tuition, fees for the coming academic year

Lander University’s Board of Trustees has approved a 3.15 percent increase in tuition for the 2014-15 academic year beginning in September. The new tuition for in-state students will be $10,418, an increase of $318. For out-of-state students, tuition goes up $602 to $19,738.

SC rejects Common Core Science Standards, adopts new standards

Columbia, SC – Today, Dr. Mick Zais, State Superintendent of Education, announced that South Carolina has rejected the Common Core Science Standards and adopted new, high-level standards.

“I am pleased to announce that we have rejected the Common Core Science Standards and adopted high-level, science standards that are appropriate for South Carolina,” said Zais.

Students donate to Make A Wish South Carolina Charity
Students in Ms. Johnson’s Integrated Business Applications class at Genesis Education Center, the alternative school in Greenwood, South Carolina were given an assignment to research and create a PowerPoint presentation about a charity of their choice. Students were asked to include in their research specific information about the charity; what does it do and who benefits from their service.  Each student presented their slideshow to the class.

Committed to serving youth and promoting the value of a quality education, The Aiken Chapter of the Links, Incorporated recognized 80 students from across the Midlands, including Greenwood County, at the chapter's annual Senior Recognition Day. The purpose of the ceremony is to award scholarships to high school seniors, and celebrate students' academic, athletic, and civic achievements. Students and supportive family members filled the pews of Old Macedonia Baptist Church in North Augusta, SC to participate in this momentous occasion.
