Piedmont Tech to hold Industrial and Engineering Program Showcase

Piedmont Technical College’s series of program showcases continues on Thursday, June 30 with an exhibition of the programs in the industrial technology and engineering technology division. The showcase will be held from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in the James Medford Family Event Center on the Lex Walters Campus-Greenwood.

BCT Is Building the Future

It’s not everyday that you get dirty when attending classes at Piedmont Technical College. Unless you are enrolled in the Building Construction Technology program.

Students in the BCT program are not only learning about construction, they are putting it to use. They are building a house.

“It takes a lot of fortitude to go out with $100,000 and a group of students and build a house,” said Bobby Roche, instructor/coordinator for the BCT division.

Ali Wins Young Faculty Scholar Award

Lander University Assistant Professor of Computer Science Dr. Farha Ali has some impressive publications, as one would expect of the winner of Lander’s Young Faculty Scholar Award.

     Her article, “The Smart Surface Network: A Bus-Based Approach to Dense Sensing,” appeared last year in the scholarly journal, Computer Networks. Other articles have appeared in Journal of Technology, Knowledge and Society and International Journal of Pervasive Computing and Communications.

Bennett receives Jeanne Florence Scholarship
Piedmont Technical College human services student Guanticha Bennett of Greenwood recently received the Jeanne Florence Scholarship Award. Pictured are, from left, Lori Florence, Bennett, Peggy Byess and Angie Kingsmore. 

This scholarship is available to past Educational Talent Search or Upward Bound students or a Student Support Services participant and is based on financial need, academic achievement and recommendation by Student Services director and staff.

Lander student one of 50 Miss S.C. contestants

Lander University student Katlyn Gordon says she has a reputation of not being a “girlie girl,” but she’s pretty much shed that distinction given activities she’s been engaged in this year.

First, she joined Lander’s “Sassy Cats” Dance Team, whose members promote university spirit and entertain at basketball games and other events. Then, in November she entered the annual Miss Lander University pageant. She said she wanted to use the event to demonstrate her talent as a singer and to help overcome her stage fright. She didn’t expect to win, but she did win the crown, as well as the People’s Choice and Talent awards.

Three Lander University students concluded the semester leading to their graduation in April by competing in a national conference on student research held in Asheville, N.C. Kimberly Modica, of Waterloo; Mariana Martins, of Portugal; and Renata Mello, of Brazil, were students in Lander’s Honors College.

Piedmont Tech to hold Program Showcases

Piedmont Technical College will be offering a series of program showcases to introduce potential students to the wide variety of program options the college has available. The first showcase will be for those interested in transferring to a four-year college or university. It will be held Thursday, June 16 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in room 102C of the James C. Self Conference Center on the Lex Walters Campus-Greenwood.

D50 Summer Food Service Program

Summer Food Service Program Greenwood School District 50 will be offering a Summer Feeding Program for students up to age 18 at the following locations:

  • Merrywood Elementary June 6 – July 14 Monday – Thursday
  • Northside Middle Westview Middle Brewer Middle June 6 – June 30 Monday – Thursday
  • Emerald High Greenwood High June 6 – June 30 & July 11 – July 21
  • Feeding Times Breakfast 7:00 – 8:00
  • Elementary and Middle Lunch 10:30 – 12:00
  • High School Lunch – 11:30 – 1:00

If you are interested in eating please report to the school office during the feeding times.

Lander graduate becomes the first clinical nurse leader in South Carolina

Jarrod Nelson, of Laurens, has added two significant “firsts” to his academic achievements since obtaining a nursing degree from Lander University’s William Preston Turner School of Nursing in 2006. In December 2015, he became the first to graduate with a master’s degree from Lander’s first-in-the-state Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) program, and he is the first in South Carolina to pass the national CNL certification exam.

Lander students receive awards for project presentations

Thirteen Lander University students have won special recognition for outstanding projects in the annual Student Academic Symposium.

Dr. Lillie Craton, director of the university’s Honors College, said the symposium allows the Lander community to hear and share in some of the best academic content that students complete. She added, “The event is a fantastic opportunity for presenters to be challenged by and complete high-level academic work worth sharing. Students must also consider their presentation skills and comfort explaining their ideas.” Craton said the experience pays off during job interviews, graduate school and communications within their careers.

Piedmont Technical College student and Greenwood resident Celeste Starks, right, received the Jane Burgdorf Realtor Cardiovascular Scholarship at the college’s annual scholarship luncheon. Starks, a cardiovascular technology student, is congratulated by Gus Burgdorf. The scholarship is awarded annually to a cardiovascular technology student and is based on academic achievement.

Greenwood Council of Garden Clubs Scholarship

Piedmont Technical College student and Greenwood resident Darcy Gatchell recently received the Greenwood Council of Garden Clubs Scholarship.

Gatchell, right, an associate in science student, was congratulated by Suzy Murray, scholarship committee member. The scholarship was established to assist a high school student entering the Horticulture Program. The scholarship is restricted to Greenwood County residents. Student must have at least a 3.0 high school grade point average.

Emerald Student Benjamin Slimmer Finalist for 2016 National Merit Scholarship

Emerald High School Senior Benjamin Slimmer has been named a Finalist in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Competition in recognition of his outstanding academic achievement and commendable scores on the PSAT examination.   

The nationwide pool of Finalists, which represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, emerges from about 1.5 million juniors in some 22,000 high schools who took the qualifying PSAT test last fall.

The Forty and 8 Scholarship

Piedmont Technical College associate degree nursing student and Greenwood resident Lisa Riggins, left, was recently awarded the Forty and 8 Scholarship at the college’s annual scholarship luncheon. Presenting the scholarship was Daniel Grubbs, right. The unit, a support group of the American Legion that was established in 1920 by World War I veterans, annually funds a nursing scholarship.

Piedmont Technical College student and Hodges resident David Turman, left, was recently awarded the Computer Consultants & Merchants, Inc. PTC Golf Classic Scholarship at the college’s annual scholarship luncheon. Turman, a welding major, is congratulated by Don Clark from CC&M, Inc. The scholarship is funded through an annual golf tournament held each spring and selection is based on academic achievement and financial need.

EMACH and GEMS Participants Receive Mentoring for Success Scholarship

On May 26th, 10 seniors from Emerald and Greenwood High School’s mentoring programs were awarded the Mentoring for Success Scholarship at a recognition banquet held at the Greenwood High School's Press-box. This year's scholarship recipients included: Brandon Clarke (EHS), Kivontay Clinkscales (EHS), Stephone Mathis (EHS), Herbert Foster (EHS), Willie Reynolds (EHS), Richard Wideman (EHS), Marcus Leach (GHS), Nicoy Hendrickson (GHS), Diimori Maduro (GHS), and Myquerris McGrier (GHS).

Local students graduate in NGU's record 2016 Class

Tigerville, SC – North Greenville University graduated the following local students on Thursday, May 5 in a record graduating class of 331.  

A baccalaureate degree student whose cumulative grade point average is at least 3.5 graduates cum laude; those with at least a 3.75 graduate magna cum laude; and those with at least a 3.9 grade point average graduate summa cum laude.

Piedmont Tech Remembers the Emanuel Nine with Special Program

As the first anniversary of the Emanuel Church shootings approaches, Piedmont Technical College will host a special event to commemorate the tragic event.

The program will be held Thursday, June 2 at 1 p.m. in the PTC library. Dr. J. David Gillespie, Dana Professor of Political Science, emeritus, at Presbyterian College, will be the guest speaker at a program featuring his book “Race Murder, Christian Forgiveness, and Revolutionary Change in Charleston South Carolina: A Seminal Moment in American History.”

At Piedmont Technical College’s recent spring commencement exercises, outstanding students from each of the college’s seven supporting counties were honored for academic achievement. Three Greenwood County students were honored for maintaining high academic success. Tammy Kullnat, left, was recognized by PTC area commission member Dr. George Cone during the evening ceremony. Kullnat is an Associate in Arts graduate.

Anderson is a computer technology graduate.
