Piedmont Tech Students Named to Academic All-State
Two Piedmont Technical College students were recently among those named to the Phi Theta Kappa South Carolina All-State Academic Team. Malaurie Hullings of Plum Branch and Kenneth Washington of Hodges were among the 29 students honored at a ceremony in Columbia.

Amber Self receives John W. Drummond Scholarship

Piedmont Technical College student and Greenwood resident Amber Self (left) was recently awarded the John W. Drummond Scholarship at the college’s annual scholarship luncheon. Self, an Associate in Science student, is congratulated by Donna Foster, PTC associate vice president for assessment and compliance. The scholarship is awarded annually and is based on academic achievement, financial need and leadership ability.

Pamela Anderson receives Early Childhood Scholarship

Piedmont Technical College student and Greenwood resident Pamela Anderson recently received the Early Childhood Scholarship at the college’s annual scholarship luncheon. Anderson (left), an ECD student, is congratulated by Fran Wiley, assistant vice president for development. The scholarship is awarded to a student in the early childhood program. Selection is based on academic achievement, financial need and community involvement.

Brewer Girls Basketball Team Sponsors "Red Out Game" In Support of American Heart Association

During the 2014 middle school basketball season, the Brewer Girls’ Basketball team participated in a "Red Out" game against Cambridge Academy. The game was held in an effort to make people aware of heart disease. The Lady Bulldogs sponsored a dodge-ball tournament at the school to raise money for the American Heart Association.

Holden Smith receives David Sherer Memorial Scholarship

Piedmont Technical College student and Ninety Six resident Holden Smith (right) was recently awarded the David Sherer Memorial Scholarship at the college’s annual scholarship luncheon. Smith, an automotive technology major, is pictured with Chad Teague, scholarship committee member. This annual scholarship is available to an Automotive Technology student with a GPA of 2.5 or higher who has financial need.

Piedmont Tech BCT Program Wins Award

Piedmont Technical College’s building construction technology program recently won the 2015 Service Learning Award presented by the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education. The program was honored for their work on a renovation project at the Ninety Six National Historical Site, locally known as Star Fort.

Lander University is accepting applications for Duke Energy’s 2015 Summer Institute at Lander, featuring science and computer programs for students in grades five through 12. The enrichment program is sponsored by a grant from Duke Energy and offers talented students a challenging educational experience with opportunities for fun and a taste of life at Lander.

Lander presents its first Moore Award for excellence in general education teaching

David Red, an instructor of physics at Lander University recognizes that many college students tend to be intimidated by physics, the branch of science concerned with the properties of matter and energy and the relationships between them. He says they might find the mathematics component especially challenging, and they often have a mindset that they will not be able to learn. So, he tries to present the subject matter in a way that relaxes them and captures and holds their attention.

Science and Mathematics Governor's School to Bring iTEAMS Xtreme to Greenwood County

Columbia, SC - The Governor's School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) is partnering with Greenwood County School District 50 to deliver iTEAMS Xtreme summer camp to rising 7th and 8th graders in Greenwood County. Derek Hemann of Greenwood receives UNL degree

Derek Tyler Hemann of Greenwood was among about 2,900 graduates who received degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in ceremonies May 8 and 9.

Hemann earned a bachelor of science in business administration from the College of Business Administration.

Lander University Honors Top Scholars

More than 60 Lander University students were honored recently for scholastic accomplishments during the 2014-15 academic year, receiving the top discipline and special awards from the university’s four colleges. Lander’s annual Academic Awards Ceremony, which also included recognition for Honors College graduates and Alpha Chi Honor Society inductees, took place in the university’s Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center at the conclusion of the spring semester.

Greenwood-area schools win $7,500 in grants from the CenturyLink Foundation for innovative technology projects

CenturyLink, Inc. recently announced the winners of the CenturyLink Clarke M. Williams Foundation’s Teachers and Technology grant program. The program, which has been offered since 2008, awards grants to schools in CenturyLink’s local service areas on behalf of teachers who have developed specific plans to innovatively implement technology in their classrooms.

District 50 Announces Participation in S.C. National Safety Council's Alive at 25 Program

On May 11th, Greenwood School District 50 officially announced its participation in the South Carolina National Safety Council’s Alive at 25 program. Alive at 25 is offered to drivers between the ages of 15 and 24 as an early intervention program to help prevent traffic violations, collisions, and/or fatalities. The purpose of the program is to help educate young drivers on safe driving practices, responsible behavior in various driving situations, and awareness of typical driving hazards.

Crawford signs with Limestone

Katie Crawford has been dreaming of playing volleyball at the collegiate level since she first took the game up in middle school. That dream became a reality Tuesday when the Greenwood Eagles standout signed a National Letter of Intent to continue her playing career at Limestone College.

Instant Admission Day to Be Offered at Piedmont Tech May 12

Piedmont Technical College will once again be offering Instant Admission Day this spring to make enrolling in college easy.

Instant Admissions Day will be Tuesday, May 12 for summer classes which begin on May 20. Fall classes begin Aug. 24. Admissions and financial aid counselors will be on hand to help students through the entire enrollment process in just one day.

Lander Student Academic Showcase Called 'Great'

The 2015 edition of Lander University’s Student Academic Showcase set new standards for the annual event, according to Associate Professor of English Dr. Lillian Craton, director of Lander’s Honors College and co-chair of the event.

“This year was great. Every year the quality of the work just keeps getting better and better,” Craton said.

Piedmont Technical College to Hold Commencement May 7

Piedmont Technical College will hold two spring commencement exercises on May 7. 

Commencement exercises will begin at 3 p.m. for agriculture, industrial & engineering technologies, business and computer technology and public service graduates. A ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. for Associate of Arts and Science, health science and nursing graduates. Both commencement exercises will be held in the James Medford Family Event Center at Piedmont Technical College in Greenwood.

Ridgeway receives The Forty and 8 Scholarship

Piedmont Technical College associate degree nursing student and Greenwood resident Gentry Ridgeway, center, was recently awarded the Forty and 8 Scholarship at the college’s annual scholarship luncheon. Presenting the scholarship were Daniel Grubbs, left, and Buddy Moss, right. The unit, a support group of the American Legion that was established in 1920 by World War I veterans, annually funds a nursing scholarship.

Lander schedules spring commencement for May 2

Lander University will conduct its spring commencement on Saturday, May 2, and it will be a historic occasion, marking Dr. Daniel Ball’s final graduation ceremony as Lander president. Ball will retire on June 30 after serving 15 years as Lander’s 12th president. His successor, Dr. Richard Cosentino, vice chancellor for Finance and Administration at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, will assume the presidency on July 1.
