Vandals damage Howard's Rock Case

CLEMSON – Early Wednesday morning at approximately 6 a.m., the case protecting Howard’s Rock was vandalized by an unknown individual. Clemson University Police are investigating the incident.

Lander's Joe Cabri selected for South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame

Retired Lander tennis coach Joe Cabri has added another honor to his illustrious career.

Cabri, a mathematics professor who coached the Lander men's tennis team to 12 national championships in his 31-year career, is among seven individuals who will be inducted into the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame on May 11 in Columbia.

Due to today's expected inclement weather, the Lander Athletic Department has made several schedule changes regarding today's baseball, softball and tennis competitions.

American Music Takes Center Stage in Wind Ensemble Show

A musical journey through American history will begin when the Lander University Wind Ensemble takes the stage for its Tuesday, Feb. 24, show.

The concert starts at 8 p.m. in the Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center Auditorium. Admission is free.

Burton Center program gets everyone moving
Burton Center’s Greenwood Day Program held a “Just Move 2015” Campaign to promote exercise and heath during the month of January.    For every 15 minutes of exercise each person received a ribbon.   Consumers and staff walked briskly around the work activity center, played basketball, and did a range of motion exercise.  A total of 716 ribbons were given out which totaled 10,740 minutes of movement!

The Teacher Cadet class from the G. Frank Russell Technology Center hosted Teacher Cadet Day December 12th. Ninety Six High School Teacher Cadets, several Lander University Professors, and many special guests were in attendance for the special activities and guest speakers.

Lander Crowns Homecoming King and Queen

Lander University wrapped up Homecoming Week festivities with the crowning of its 2015 Homecoming King and Queen: senior Dentaveous Walker, pictured left, a mass communication major from Union; and junior Katherine Tipp, a history/secondary education major from Charlotte, N.C. Walker, who was sponsored in the competition by Zeta Tau Alpha Fraternity, and Tipp, sponsored by Phi Mu Fraternity, were recognized during special ceremonies at halftime of the Lander women’s and men’s basketball games on Feb. 7.

Academic Honor Students Recognized for 2014 Fall Semester

Piedmont Technical College students who had outstanding academic accomplishments during the 2014 fall semester have earned inclusion on the President’s List. To be named to the list, students must be full time and earn a term GPA of 4.00. Students will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the college president.

Jacob Stockman of Greenwood named to Aurora University Dean's List

AURORA, IL (readMedia) - Jacob Stockman of Greenwood, SC earned high honors on the Aurora University Dean's List during the spring 2014 semester.

Stockman joins more than 900 other AU students who were honored for their academic success. The Dean's List recognizes students who have earned a 3.6 GPA or higher. Students recognized with high honors have earned a perfect 4.0.

Dylan Fender makes the Dean's List at Coastal Carolina University

Dylan Fender, a Senior majoring in Political Science, from Greenwood, SC, was among approximately 2,125 students at Coastal Carolina University who made the Fall 2014 Dean's List.

To qualify for the Dean's List, freshmen must earn a 3.25 grade point average, and upperclassmen must earn a 3.5 grade point average. To qualify for the President's List, students must earn a 4.0 grade point average. All students must be enrolled full time.

The Gifted and Talented students in Mrs. Bernetha Culbreath’s class at Pinecrest Elementary School held a Christmas Mini Mall in the school cafeteria on Dec. 17th. The Christmas Mini Mall served as a conclusion to an economics unit on entrepreneurship.

Congratulations to the students at Ninety Six Elementary School who were recently selected at Students of the Month.  These students exemplified outstanding behavior and character for the months of December and January.  The students were recognized by the Greenwood Kiwanis club and treated to a well deserved lunch at Mig’s of Ninety Six.

Lander women's basketball to hold "Think Pink" game, Feb. 4

The Lander women's basketball team, in conjunction with the American Cancer Society, will hold its annual "Think Pink" game on Wednesday, Feb. 4 when the Lady Bearcats host Francis Marion in a Peach Belt Conference game at 5:30 p.m. in Horne Arena.

The purpose of the "Think Pink" game is to help bring awareness to breast cancer. There will be free admission for all who wear pink and arrive before halftime.

Lander to Celebrate Life of Civil Rights Legend and Greenwood Native During Black History Month

February is Black History Month, and Lander University is marking the occasion with a celebration of the life of Dr. Benjamin Mays, a Greenwood native and vital contributor to the civil rights movement. The program, which is free and open to the public, is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 9, at 7 p.m. in the university’s Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center. It is made possible by Lander’s Fine Arts and Lectureship Series (FALS).

AMBER ALERT Cancelled, suspect remains at large

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has cancelled the AMBER ALERT for 14 year old Alexis Ann Deas out of Chesterfield SC.  SLED cancelled the alert early this morning around 1 a.m stating the teen had been located but the suspect remains at large.

Piedmont Tech Kicks Off Black History Month Activities

Piedmont Technical College will host a series of Black History Month events at the college that include music, photography and poetry.

During the month of February, the library will sponsor a traveling exhibit “Camera Man’s Journey: Julian Dimock’s South,” from the South Carolina State Museum. The historic photographs that will be featured were taken in and around Columbia, Beaufort and Hilton Head between 1904 and 1905 by noted photographer Julian Dimock. Dimock’s large format images show men, women, families and a significant number of children engaged in everyday life – at work, at home and at play. They document the clothing, tools, toys as well as the landscape and architecture of the period. The exhibit will run Feb. 2-27.

Hodges 5th grader Davis Shirley Recognized as DAR's Essay Contest Winner

On Friday, January 23rd, Hodges Elementary School 5thgrader Davis Shirley was recognized as the regional winner of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) annual essay contest!

Members of the DAR Mt. Ariel Chapter in Hodges presented Davis with a certificate and medal for his winning essay. Davis is a 5th grader in Sally Strawhorne’s class. His winning essay will be submitted for judging at the state level.

Lander Alumni Association names three for its top awards

Lander University’s Alumni Association has selected a retired criminal investigator, an academician and a business executive to receive its prestigious annual awards.

The honorees are Don Bergman, of Greenwood, Class of 1970; Dr. David Harrill Roberts, ’70, of Athens, Ga., and Robert Bennett, ’01, of Augusta, Ga.

Health Care Assisting students honored

G. Frank Russell Technology Center students were honored for completing the Health Care Assisting Program. This program provides students with the theory and clinical experience to obtain entry-level skills as a Nursing Assistant. During their clinical experience, the students provided care for the residents at Wesley Commons Health Care.
