Area College Students Head Back to Class

Students at Piedmont Technical College recently headed back to class. Eaton support boost D50 projects

During the spring of 2017, Greenwood School District 50 was once again given the opportunity to apply for the Eaton Charitable Contribution Grant. Eaton and District 50 began a collaborative partnership in 2009. Since that time, District 50 has received approximately $140,000 in grants to support STEM initiatives.

Outstanding Students Honored at Piedmont Technical College Graduation

At Piedmont Technical College’s recent summer commencement exercises, outstanding students from each of the college’s seven supporting counties were honored for academic achievement.

Greenwood's Delta Sigma Theta Sorority issues scholarships & awards

During the recent 2016-2017 Chapter Scholarships and Awards Program, the Greenwood Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. awarded scholarships to three area students and awards to two chapter members. The chapter awarded three $1000.00 Scholarships to area high school graduates for 2017 in our service area of Greenwood, McCormick and Abbeville Counties of South Carolina.  Guest speaker for the occasion was Rev. Krystal Bryant who is Pastor of St. Paul Methodist Church in Hodges South Carolina.

District 50 Ready for Total Solar Eclipse on August 21st

Greenwood School District 50 will begin the 2017-2018 school year by witnessing a phenomenal event. On August 21, 2017, Greenwood and parts of the surrounding counties will experience a total solar eclipse. This will serve as the first total solar eclipse for our area since the early 1900’s and will not happen again until 2078.

Freshman Move-In Day welcomes hundreds to Lander University

A steady stream of incoming college students moved through the doorways of Lander University's residence halls on Monday morning (Aug. 14).  More than 200 volunteers, equipped with hand trucks and muscle power, helped students, and their families unload vehicles __ hauling mini-refrigerators, lamps, mirrors, clothing and other essentials to the students' rooms.

Piedmont Technical College students who had outstanding academic accomplishments during the 2017 spring semester have earned inclusion on the President’s List. To be named to the list, students must be full time and earn a term GPA of 4.00. Students will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the college president.

Piedmont Tech Presents An Evening of Americana Music

Piedmont Technical College is hosting a memorable night of song.

An Evening of Americana Music featuring Fayssoux Starling McLean with Brandon Turner will be held Thursday, Aug. 17 at 7 p.m. in the PTC library.

McLean is best known to country fans for her gorgeous harmonies on some of Emmylou Harris’s iconic 70s recordings like "Green Rolling Hills of West Virginia". She recorded her debut solo album in 2008, followed by a second well-received album in 2013.

Lander University to Offer Equine Therapy to Veterans With PTSD

Lander University will soon offer an equine therapy program for U.S. military veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The horse-based therapy initiative, which will begin in the spring of 2018 at Lander’s Equestrian Center on Hwy. 72-221 in Greenwood, is made possible by appropriated funds from the South Carolina State Legislature.

Greenwood School District notice on Community Eligibility Provision

Effective July 1, 2017 through June 30, 2018

Greenwood School District 50 is participating in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) for the 2017/2018 school year.  Section 104(a) of the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010 amended section 11(a)(1) of the Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act (42 U.S.C. 1759a(a)(1))(the law) to provide an alternative to household applications for free and reduced-price meals in local educational agencies (LEAs) and schools with increased levels of low-income students. This alternative is referred to as the Community Eligibility Provision.  All students enrolled in the school/district may participate in the breakfast and lunch program at no charge to them.  Families will not have to fill out meal applications.

Lander University announces Spring 2017 graduates

This spring, Lander University conferred bachelor's and master's degrees upon 264 graduates during the university’s 155th commencement ceremony. Mr. Kevin Marsh, chairman and chief executive officer of SCANA Corporation, delivered the keynote address before a full house at the university’s Horne Arena.

Piedmont Technical College to Hold Commencement August 3

Piedmont Technical College will be holding two summer commencement exercises on Aug. 3. 

Commencement exercises will begin at 3 p.m. for nursing, industrial technology, engineering technology, agriculture, computer technology and business graduates. A ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. for Associate in Arts, Associate in Science and health science graduates. Both commencement exercises will be held in the James Medford Family Event Center at Piedmont Technical College in Greenwood.

Two Piedmont Technical College students were recently awarded the Fujifilm Manufacturing Scholarship at the college’s annual scholarship luncheon.

Lander tennis teams earn ITA academic honors

The Lander men's and women's tennis programs were honored by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association for their academic achievements during the 2016-17 academic year on Wednesday.

 Both were selected as ITA All-Academic Teams, while the Bearcats led the Peach Belt Conference with 13 ITA Scholar-Athletes.
