Wildcats marching toward another State Championship
To those who have been associated with marching bands, you know just how difficult it is to win a high school state championship.  The Ninety Six Marching Band is currently back-to-back 1-A State Champions and are about to compete for their chance at a third.  But first comes the Upper State competition this Saturday where Ninety Six Wildcats have won the last eight years.

Art reception kicks off new exhibit by national artist

GREENWOOD, S.C. – A crowd of nearly 70 showed up on Oct. 16 at a reception to see drawer-artist Jillian Dickson debut a brand new exhibit at Lander University’s Monsanto Gallery.

Dickson’s five-week exhibit, titled “The Collective Mine,” runs through Nov. 20 and is considered an artistic coup for Lander’s College of Arts & Humanities.

“I’ve been showing my students her artwork all six years I’ve been teaching at Lander,” said Elizabeth Snipes-Rochester, associate professor of art. “To have someone of her caliber exhibiting here and interacting with our art students is a real treat for us.”

Piedmont Tech Promotes Work-Life Balance and Wellness in Employees

Piedmont Technical College is taking an additional approach to helping their students succeed. That approach is to promote a work-life balance and wellness in their employees. This approach is part of Piedmont Tech’s strategic directions and goals. It’s achieved through ongoing efforts such as PTC’s annual Wellness Expo, as well as new amenities such as a faculty/staff wellness center.

Mathews Elementary Recognized as First D50 School to Reach United Way Goal

District 50’s United Way campaign began on October 2nd with an overall district goal of $62,000. Each school representative received their school goal and other campaign materials at a kickoff meeting held at the United Way Center. The representatives also viewed a United Way video which showed the impact their dollars have on our community.

Family Day is Saturday, Oct. 21 at Lander

With October ready to burst forth with colors and cooler weather, Lander University will host its 2017 Family Day from mid-morning until almost midnight on October 21.

The annual Saturday event, now nearing its 30-year mark, will last approximately 14 hours and is open to all Lander students, faculty and staff, their families, and Lander alumni.  “Family Day is going to have a different look than in past years,” said Mike Rapay, director of Student Activities and Engagement. “We want people to be able to come to the event at any time of the day, stay as long as they want, and have more flexibility in choosing what they want to participate in.”

Forty District 50 Students Recognized for ACCESS 2017 Success

Forty Greenwood School District 50 students were recognized for meeting the Exit Criteria for English Proficiency on ACCESS 2017 and speaking an additional language at the October 16th Board of Trustees meeting. This means that these students are fluent in their native language and the English language.

Rookard Joins Lander as General Counsel

Lander University announced today that Crystal Rookard, a veteran attorney for state government and higher education, has been appointed to the university’s newly established position of general counsel.

As Lander’s general counsel, Rookard reports directly to Lander President Richard Cosentino, and will play a vital role in providing legal and strategic advice to the president, Board of Trustees and other senior administrators.

Piedmont Tech Welcomes New Presidential Ambassadors

Each year, Piedmont Technical College chooses some of its best and brightest to serve as Presidential Ambassadors. These students represent the college at campus functions, provide tours and speak about their experiences to potential students. This year’s select 14 are from a variety of backgrounds, representing many program areas and hometowns, but they all have one thing in common. They all echo a common message of gratitude for the impact Piedmont Tech has had on their lives, both personally and academically.

GHS Receives Publix Super Markets Charities Grant for School Pantries

Greenwood High School recently received a $3,000 grant from Publix Super Markets Charities that will be used for school pantries in Greenwood School District 50.

Publix Super Markets Charities announced a $5 million donation to the Feeding America network for schools and other non-profits in the Southeast. The donation was designated to be utilized to help alleviate hunger within families and communities throughout the Southeast.

In recognition of more than a quarter century of service to the region and to the state of South Carolina, Piedmont Technical College recently announced that the Upstate Center for Manufacturing Excellence will be named in honor of the late Sen. Billy O'Dell.

Southeast Dairy Presents Grant Check on Behalf of Fuel Up to Play 60

On behalf of the Fuel Up to Play 60 and Southeast United Dairy Industry Association, Inc. (SUDIA) presented Hodges Elementary with a $4,000 Fuel Up to Play 60 grant award. The funds will assist Hodges Elementary in adding dairy based smoothies to their school meal programs, serve chocolate milk after physical education, and refresh recess equipment.

With commencement just a little more than 10 weeks away, graduating seniors at Lander University tried on caps and gowns, ordered class rings, checked their student accounts and squared away loose ends during the university's Grad Gala on Wednesday, Oct. 4.

Smoot Recognized for 50 Years of Hard Work and Service

District Office Front Receptionist Bettye Smoot was recognized at the September Board of Trustees meeting with a Certificate of Appreciation for 50 years of hard work and service in Greenwood School District 50.

Mrs. Smoot began working in District 50 as a receptionist on September 11, 1967. During her 50 years in District 50, she has served as the first face and voice of the Administrative Offices.

Greenwood School District announces make-up days

Due to the inclement weather related closings on September 11th and September 12th, changes were made to the Greenwood School District 50 calendar. The district will utilize the first two of the three designated days in the 2017-2018 calendar as school make-up days. February 16, 2018 and February 19, 2018 will become full school days for all students and staff. District 50 schools and offices will operate on a regular schedule on both of these days.

Lander alum turns history degree into curatorship

In his senior year at Lander University, Brad Utter needed some real-life direction for a growing, looming problem: he was set to graduate in the spring of 1998 with a degree in History, but since he didn’t want to teach in a school, he wondered what else to do with his degree.

Lander announces $500 book scholarship prize through BLUE Army app

GREENWOOD – Lander Athletics has announced a partnership with University Enrollment Management to offer two $500 book scholarships through the BLUE Army fan loyalty rewards app. 

The five full-time students who accumulate the most points through the app will be entered into a random drawing that will take place on December 4 during the women's basketball game against Converse.

Ninety Six High School students "drop, everything and read"

Students at Ninety Six High School took 15 minutes out of their busy schedules to read from 10:00 -10:15 AM on Friday, September 8.  The 15 minutes was uninterrupted reading time for all students, faculty, and staff at Ninety Six High School. Literacy is a district-wide initiative in all schools in Greenwood School District #52.
