CenturyLink to offer $1.4 million in Teachers and Technology grants in local markets across the country

MONROE, La. – CenturyLink, Inc. (NYSE: CTL) is connecting teachers with technology for the classroom. The CenturyLink Clarke M. Williams Foundation’s Teachers and Technology grant program opened its application process Oct. 1 for teachers in CenturyLink’s local service areas who want to innovatively implement technology in their classrooms to increase student achievement.

Productions by two Lander students chosen to compete for national awards

Two Lander University mass communication majors have written radio documentaries about two devastating experiences in their lives, and both productions are finalists in competition at the annual College Broadcasters, Inc. (CBI) convention in Minneapolis, Minn., in late October.

The Miss Ninety Six High School Pageant 2015-2016 will be held Monday, October 26th in the NSHS Cafeteria facility.  Everyone attending will park in the rear of the Middle School and enter through the Middle School Cafeteria.  Please look for signs and directions when you arrive!

Piedmont Tech Hosts Business and Industry Showcase

Greenwood Partnership Alliance in association with Piedmont Technical College recently held the inaugural Greenwood County Business and Industry Showcase, which featured more than 20 Greenwood industries that provided information to approximately 1500 area 10th and 11th graders, as well as seniors from the G. Frank Russell Technology Center. The showcase was hosted in the James Medford Family Event Center at Piedmont Tech.

Girl Scouts starting back in Ware Shoals

After several years absence, Girl Scouts will be returning to Ware Shoals under Troop Leader Jessica Smith. Smith, a Ware Shoals native.  Smith is hoping to add to the opportunities school-aged females in the community are afforded. "If we want our girls to grow up to make a difference in the world, they must be given the opportunity to discover who they are, what they care about, and what talents they have. It is critical that they connect with others and take action to make the world a better place."

Trenton Kelley takes first at NS Fishing League first tournament

Ninety Six Fishing League achieved success at their first fishing tournament held at Greenwood State Park on Sept 19, 2015. 

For the High School, Trenton Kelley took first place with a total weight of 8.36lbs.  Runner-up was Alex Maddox with 5.16lbs and the Big Fish went to Tyler Gardner for bringing in one weighing 3.99lbs.

Academic Honor Students Recognized for 2015 Summer Term

Piedmont Technical College students who had outstanding academic accomplishments during the 2015 summer term have earned inclusion on the President’s List. To be named to the list, students must be full time and earn a term GPA of 4.00. Students will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the college president.

GHS Students in The Chill Donate to Mathews Custodian

On September 18th, Greenwood High School students in a group called The Chill delivered clothing items and money to an employee in need at Mathews Elementary School. The Chill is a student-led organization at GHS that meets once a week in the mornings prior to school. One of the group’s main goals is finding ways they can give back to their school or community. This year, the students in The Chill have been found cleaning up the GHS auditorium, serving as morning greeters at the front of the school, or welcoming new students to the campus.

“I do catch some flak for being as young as I am,” Crowder said. “I teach mostly in the evenings with students who are working adults, and they’re kind of wary of a guy half their age teaching the class.”

PTC Sponsors Fall Kick-off and Club Fair

Students at Piedmont Technical College were treated to a Fall Kick-off and Club Fair Tuesday. Organizations and clubs on campus presented information to students during the event as well as provided a free hot dog lunch. The annual event welcomes students back to class.

$5 Million Federal Grant Awarded to SC Technical College System to Expand Apprenticeship in South Carolina

The apprenticeship programs at Piedmont Technical College will continue to grow as the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration (DOLETA) recently awarded the SC Technical College System a $5 million grant to expand apprenticeship in the state. This grant is part of the American Apprenticeship Initiative (AAI) and represents the federal government's largest investment in apprenticeship with $100 million in grants awarded across the country.

Lander University continued to flex its muscle as a leader in education this week as over a hundred Montessori teaching experts from throughout the Southeast took part in the Summit on Montessori Education in South Carolina Public Schools. Mechatronics Grad Finds Passion Again

Jason White tried to avoid the family business. But, he found out it was in his blood.

“My great-grandfather was an engineer, my grandfather was an engineer, my father was an engineer,” he said. “I had great aptitude for engineering, but I thought pursuing a career in something I loved was important.”

Self Regional Healthcare's Sports Medicine Center Donates $5,450 to Local High Schools

Self Regional Healthcare’s Sports Medicine Center recently presented Emerald High School and Greenwood High School with donations totaling $5,450 after hosting their annual sports physical clinic for District 50 middle and high school students on May 4 and 5. Physicians and staff of the Sports Medicine Center traveled to both Greenwood and Emerald High School and provided 277 physicals over the two-day period.

Lander University No. 4 in U.S. News & World Report's Top Public Regional Colleges in the South

The U.S. News & World Report has ranked Lander University among the top five public regional colleges in the South in its 2016 “Best Colleges” guide.

The annual report, released Sept. 9, places Lander in the #4 spot for the category, which includes schools that “focus almost entirely on the undergraduate experience and offer a broad range of programs in the liberal arts ... and in fields such as business, nursing and education,” according to the guide.

Piedmont Tech to Offer More Veterans Services through Grant

Piedmont Technical College has been awarded more than $500,000 for the first time to begin a Student Support Services (SSS) Program for qualifying veteran students.

The grant began on Sept. 1 and will continue for five years, serving 60 students each year. Eligibility requirements and goals and objectives are similar to the regular SSS grant program.

Lander students, faculty and staff to gather for annual convocation

Students, faculty and staff will attend Lander University’s opening convocation on Monday, Sept. 14, at 4 p.m., in the Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center Auditorium, signaling the start of the new academic year. It will be the first Lander convocation for Dr. Richard Cosentino, who became the university’s 13th president on July 1, following the retirement of former president Dr. Daniel Ball.

Eaton Corporation Continues Support of Engineering Education with Donation

Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation recently made a generous $50,000 donation to the Piedmont Technical College Foundation. 

“We’re proud to support Piedmont Technical College’s engineering technology programs,” said Rick Todd, plant manager of Eaton's Emerald Road facility. “Our contribution will help our community’s students succeed academically today, and in the workplace later on.”

Lander University graduates 293 at spring commencement ceremonies
Lander University conferred degrees upon 293 graduates at the university’s spring Commencement ceremony in May. Cameron Dorn, the 2010 Lander graduate who has become famous as a record-setting endurance athlete and distance runner, delivered the keynote address before a full house at the university’s Horne Arena. The event marked Dr. Daniel Ball’s final graduation ceremony as Lander president. His successor, Dr. Richard Cosentino, former vice chancellor for Finance and Administration at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, assumed the presidency on July 1.
