Piedmont Tech to Host Engineering Showcase
Piedmont Technical College will host an Open House and Showcase for its Engineering Graphics Technology Program Friday, July 31, from 9:30-11 a.m. During the event, visitors will get a hands-on preview of the program through demonstrations in the college’s state-of-the-art computer designed CAD laboratory using AutoCAD, other advanced CAD software and 3D printers.

NS School District to name baseball field to honor Sammy Corley

The Ninety Six School Board approved a resolution during their meeting held Tuesday, July 21 to rename the Ninety Six Baseball field to honor the late Sammy Corley.

Corley has a long list of accolades starting as far back as the late 50’s.  He was a six-time MVP of Ninety Six Wildcat Baseball and named All-State, Co-Captain of the 1962 State Champion Football team and further went on to play in the American Legion Baseball league.

Lander receives five-year funding to assist students from disadvantaged backgrounds

Lander University and 20 other South Carolina institutions of higher education will share in a more than $5-million federal grant to fund their Student Support Services (SSS) programs.

The programs are designed to identify and provide services for students identified as disadvantaged, giving them intensive academic support, tutoring, counseling and career and cultural enrichment.

Greenwood School District 50 is beginning a dialogue between school administration and parents concerning the 1:1 Google Chromebook rollout for next school year. District 50 is inviting parents and community leaders to take part in the Technology Community Awareness Sessions being held in May.

Piedmont Tech Welding Instructor Destined to Teach

Tony Amos was destined to become a welder. His heart led him to take up teaching.

Amos grew up in Laurens County, graduating from Laurens District 55 High School in 1986 and joined the United States Marine Corps. He started as a diesel engine repairman and worked his way through the ranks to become an instructor.

Parker receives Bickley Memorial Scholarship

Alexis Parker, a recent graduate of Emerald High School, has been selected as a recipient of the Brandon James Bickley and Hannah Faith Bickley Memorial Scholarship.  This is a $1000.00 Scholarship that is presented to residents of housing programs assisted by member agencies of the Carolinas Council of Housing Redevelopment and Codes Officials.  Ms. Parker will be attending Winthrop University in the fall majoring in Accounting.

Arnez Gray listed on Commissioner's Honor Roll

NEWBERRY, SC - The South Atlantic Conference has released the 2014-15 Commissioner's Honor Roll, with 126 Newberry College student-athletes named to the list.  One of those students is Arnez Gray of Greenwood SC.

To be eligible for inclusion on the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll, student-athletes must have competed in a sponsored championship sport and maintained a cumulate GPA of 3.30 or higher throughout the academic year.

Lander and School District 50 form Montessori education partnership

Lander University and Greenwood School District 50 have agreed to partner in establishing and operating a Montessori Early Childhood laboratory school at Lakeview Elementary School in Greenwood. Both sides said the agreement will provide exemplary educational opportunities for children and an enhanced environment for Lander to deliver its Montessori Teacher Education program.

IG at John de la Howe Board meeting; new chair named

McCORMICK — Speaking at Thursday’s meeting of the John de la Howe School Board of Trustees, State Inspector General Patrick Maley said it is important for South Carolina to treat troubled teens before they get into deeper trouble.

Maley told the trustees that state leaders are starting to understand the importance of investing in behavioral health problems early.

“Doing so prevents greater costs downstream, and the return on your initial investment is tenfold,” Maley said.

Lander offers SAT preparation course for high school students

Lander University will offer a special course beginning July 17 and continuing through August 7 for high school students who plan to take the Scholastic Aptitude Test scheduled for next fall.

The program is called SAT PRO. It will be taught on the Lander campus by Dr. Lillian Craton, associate professor of English and director of Lander’s Honors College, who will be the reading and writing instructor, and Gina Dunn, chair of Lander’s Department of Mathematics and Computing, who will teach the mathematics section.

Students from Lakelands region participate in summer science program at Lander

Fourteen budding criminologists learned about the fascinating world of forensics during the opening week of the 2015 Duke Energy’s Summer Institute at Lander University. Classes opened on Monday, June 22, and featured the many scientific methods used by law enforcement to solve crimes.

On June 1st, The Iota Upsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated awarded 7 scholarships to 2015 high school graduates from the Abbeville, Greenwood, and McCormick areas. Each student will receive $1000 to the college they will attend in the fall.

Game Changer Scholarship Established at Piedmont Tech

Susan Thompson is a legend in Greenwood County for her accomplishments at Greenwood High School, where she coached the girls’ basketball team to 299 wins, eight region crowns and two upper state titles. And now a scholarship has been established in her honor at Piedmont Technical College that aims to continue her legacy.

Piedmont Tech Instructor Finds the Right Path in Building Construction Technology

Bobby Roche tried many options in his search for his perfect career before he found his love with building construction technology (BCT). Now, 17 years later, he can’t imagine doing anything else.

Following his high school graduation, Roche entered the workforce, but realized the job he was in wasn’t what he wanted to do. He enrolled at Piedmont Technical College in the welding program. While he enjoyed welding, he knew it was not the career for him.  He changed his major once more before switching to the program that would lead to the career he still loves to this day.

Lander Board honors President Daniel Ball on his retirement

Lander University’s Board of Trustees has given an official send-off to Dr. Daniel Ball, who will retire as Lander president on June 30th. At a gathering preceding its regular Board meeting on June 17, trustees presented Ball with a resolution, noting his 15 years of service as Lander’s 12th president, the fifth longest-serving president in the university’s 143-year history.

Joshua Smith Receives Degree from Georgia Tech

ATLANTA, GA  - Joshua Smith of Greenwood, SC (29649), has earned a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta.

Smith was among approximately 2,700 undergraduate and graduate students who received degrees during Georgia Tech's 249th commencement exercises on May 1 and 2 at the McCamish Pavilion.

Lander continues to draw increasing numbers of international students

Lander University’s international program experienced another successful academic year in 2014-15. Dean of International Programs Po Hu said the university’s five-year-old initiative has seen an impressive increase in the number of international students coming to Lander and more Lander students choosing to enroll in academic programs at schools overseas.

Jacob Stockman of Greenwood named to Aurora University Dean's List

AURORA, IL -  Jacob Stockman of Greenwood, SC earned high honors on the Aurora University Dean's List during the spring 2015 semester.

Stockman joins more than 900 other AU students who were honored for their academic success. The Dean's List recognizes students who have earned a 3.6 GPA or higher. Students recognized with high honors have earned a perfect 4.0.
