Area College Students Head Back to Class

Students at Piedmont Technical College recently headed back to class. ACT Report Shows Improvement Opportunities for South Carolina Students

Columbia, SC – Today, ACT released its 2016 Condition of College and Career Readiness Report for the Class of 2016. South Carolina’s 2016 high school graduates earned an overall composite score of 18.5 compared to an average of 19.8 in the twenty states that require the test.

Jason Burke named Lander's head baseball coach

Jason Burke, a Palmetto State native who has spent the majority of his 11-year coaching career in the Carolinas, has been named the sixth head baseball coach in Lander University history, Interim Athletic Director Les Robinson announced today.

"My family and I are extremely excited to get to Greenwood and to get started," Burke said. "We're just honored and blessed to have this opportunity. Lander is such a great baseball program and such a great school and to be named the head coach here is definitely an honor.

As summer draws to a close, students across the country are gearing up for their first college experience.  Approximately 700 incoming freshmen converged upon campus during Lander University’s annual Freshman Move-In Day (August 17).

Green Fundraiser Draws a Crowd
More than 50 people ignored the heat Saturday to participate in this year’s Glenas Green Community Action Day, which featured a 5K Walk/Run at the Jeff May Complex on Montague Avenue. 

The event is a fundraiser for the Glenas Green College of Education Endowed Scholarship at Lander University and the Glenas’s Girls Mentoring Program at Brewer Middle School. Green, a 1979 graduate of Lander who worked for 30 years as an educator in Greenwood, died in 2010 after a bout with pancreatic cancer.

Rixon Lane named Lander's Assistant AD for Sports Media

Rixon Lane was named Lander University's next Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Media it was announced today by Acting Senior Associate Athletic Director Kevin Pederson.

Lane replaces Bob Stoner, who will retire from Lander after 28 years, including 21 as the full-time SID. Lane will start his new position on September 1.

Clemson and National Park Service unveil digital repository for national and state parks

CLEMSON, South Carolina — Clemson University and the National Park Service have released the Open Parks Network, a digital gallery of rare and unique material from the archives of the country’s national parks, historic sites and battlefields. The network’s website is growing perpetually and currently features more than 100,000 high-resolution, public domain images.

Delach Wins Young Faculty Teaching Award

Teaching works best, in the view of Lander University Assistant Professor of Environmental Chemistry Dr. Diana Delach, when it seems most relevant.

“I think if you can tap into what students already know and are already interested in and link your material to that, however tangentially you’ve got to do it, that gives everybody a reason to show up,” said Delach, winner of this year’s Young Faculty Teaching Award.

Retired Lander Athletics Director Jeff May was honored recently when U.S. Congressman Jeff Duncan acknowledged May's four decades of service in a ceremony at the Jeff May Complex by presenting him with a U.S. flag that had flown over our nation's Capitol.

Golf tournament to benefit John de la Howe

The annual Fall John de la Howe School Open Golf Tournament is scheduled Saturday, Aug. 27 at Hickory Knob State Park.

The John de la Howe Alumni Association sponsors tournaments each spring and fall to benefit children attending the 219-year-old school, which serves children with behavioral challenges from across South Carolina.

Russell receives Frank Wardlaw Memorial Scholarship
Piedmont Technical College heating, ventilation and air conditioning technology student and Greenwood resident Tipton Russell recently received the Frank Wardlaw Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is available to an HVAC student with preference given to a student from Troy or McCormick County. Second preference is given to an adult student returning due to a career change.

Lander's Kermit Smith named Appalachian State head baseball coach

BOONE, N.C. – Kermit Smith, a 15-year head coaching veteran, has been named the 13th head baseball coach at Appalachian State University, director of athletics Doug Gillin announced on Thursday.

Smith, who comes to Appalachian State after seven seasons as the head coach at Lander University in Greenwood, S.C., replaces Billy Jones, whose employment was discontinued in May.

Sansbury receives Self Regional Healthcare PTC Golf Classic Scholarship

Piedmont Technical College student and Greenwood resident Kim Sansbury, right, was recently awarded the Self Regional Healthcare PTC Golf Classic Scholarship at the college’s annual scholarship luncheon. Sansbury, a medical assisting student, is congratulated by Mark Hyatt of Self Regional Healthcare. The scholarship is funded through an annual golf tournament held each spring and selection is based on academic achievement and financial need.

The Emerald Chapter IAAP offers a scholarship to a student in the Administrative Office Technology associate degree program. Other criteria includes academic achievement and financial need.

Harrison receives Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship

Piedmont Technical College student and Greenwood resident Yolanda Harrison, right, recently received the Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship at the college’s annual scholarship luncheon. Harrison, an administrative office technology student, is congratulated by Vernessia Wideman, Phi Theta Kappa advisor. Supported through the fundraising events of the PTC’s Omega Chi Chapter, the scholarship is awarded annually to active members. Phi Theta Kappa is the international honor society for students of two-year colleges.

This scholarship is awarded to a student that does not qualify for State or Federal assistance and demonstrates leadership skills, academic achievement and financial need.
