Piedmont Tech Celebrates 50th Anniversary with Scholarship

Tis the season of giving. If you are looking for a way to give back to the community, Piedmont Technical College has just the thing.

Piedmont Tech has been celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. To commemorate this milestone, the college is working to endow a 50th Anniversary Scholarship.

“For 50 years, the college has been impacting lives within our seven county area,” said Fran Wiley, assistant vice president for development. “Establishing this scholarship will help current and future PTC students achieve their dreams for generations to come.”

A Wildcat Comicon is being held to benefit the Ninety Six Indoor Percussion Band program on Dec 10, 2016 from 10am to 6pm in the Werts Building across from Las Cascadas Mexican Restaurant in Ninety Six.

Piedmont Tech Welcomes New Class of Presidential Ambassadors

Each year, Piedmont Technical College chooses some of its best and brightest to serve as Presidential Ambassadors. These students represent the college at campus functions, provide tours and speak about their experiences to potential students. This year’s select 13 are from a variety of backgrounds, representing many program areas and hometowns, but they all have one thing in common. They all echo a common message of gratitude for the impact Piedmont Tech has had on their lives, both personally and academically.

Lander's last grandchild dies at 104

Lander University lost one of its most time-honored alumni on Dec. 5 when Margaret Lander Scheibler died peacefully at the Renaissance retirement center in Due West.

Scheibler, originally from Calhoun Falls, S.C., was 104.

Piedmont Technical College to Hold Commencement December 13

Piedmont Technical College will be holding fall commencement exercises on Tuesday, Dec. 13. 

Commencement exercises will begin at 3 p.m. in the James Medford Family Event Center at Piedmont Technical College in Greenwood. 

Due to limited seating, tickets will be required for all guests attending the graduation ceremony. Each ticketholder, including children, will be entitled to one seat.

In recognition of Piedmont Technical College’s 50th anniversary, the commencement address will be presented by Dr. Jeremy Lord.

NSHS students go pink to support breast cancer awareness

Ninety Six High School Library Club sponsored a school-wide pink out day to raise money for The American Cancer Society. The total donation contributed to The American Cancer Society was $137.00. Students donated $1.00 to wear hats, or purchase a pink ribbon to support Breast Cancer Awareness.

The Lander University Alumni Association will hold its fourth annual Lander Lily Scholarship Luncheon on Thursday, Dec. 15, 2016. The event will take place beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the Lander Foundation and Alumni Center, located at 302 Hampton St. in Greenwood.

Ninety Six High School Library Club donates items to Meg's House.

Ninety Six High School Library Club sponsored a school-wide toiletry drive to support Meg's House in Greenwood.

The library club members voted to donate items to Meg's House in Greenwood this year as their local charity.  Jackie Rapp, Librarian and Club Sponsor encourages the members of the library club to always give back to the communities that they live in.

Hundreds Celebrate Lander's Holiday Tree Lighting

Rainy weather did not dampen the holiday festivities at Lander University on Tuesday night (Nov. 29), as about 600 gathered on campus for the 2nd annual Holiday Tree Lighting celebration. After monitoring the weather forecast of a much-needed rainfall for the extremely dry region, organizers decided to move most of the activities inside the Grier Student Center.

Dozens of college students and their loved ones filled a campus meeting space on Monday, Nov. 28, to participate in an academic ritual that has been going on at Lander University for nearly 60 years.

The Western Piedmont Education Consortium (WPEC) just got stronger with its recent addition of Lander University this past October.

Lander’s inclusion, along with Piedmont Technical College, is the first time higher education will be represented with WPEC.

Monica Louise Cleland, a mass communication and theatre major from Greenville, was crowned Miss Lander University 2016-17 during the annual pageant held Monday, Nov. 14, in the Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center Auditorium.

Largest Group for Recruiting Event Shows Ongoing Trend in Growing Enrollment for Lander University

Lander University’s Office of Admissions hosted the school’s largest recruiting event on Saturday, Nov. 19, at its second Open House event of the year.

“Nearly 1,000 people were registered, and it was the largest group we’ve ever had here at Lander for Open House,” said Andy Benoit, vice president for Enrollment and Access Management at Lander.

Rodeo star Amberley Snyder to speak at Lander's December Commencement

More than 200 graduates are expected to cross the stage and receive their degrees on Dec. 14, 2016, during Lander University’s fall commencement. The ceremony for the Class of 2016 will begin at 11 a.m. in Finis Horne Arena.

World rodeo champion and motivational speaker Amberley Snyder will deliver the keynote address.

Greenwood District 50 Students Visit Piedmont Tech

Piedmont Technical College recently hosted a group of students from Greenwood District 50 who toured the Lex Walters Campus in Greenwood. Emerald Men Advancing and Changing History (EMACH) from Emerald High School and Greenwood Eagles Men of Success (GEMS) from Greenwood High School toured the various departments on campus from health sciences to welding and learned about the many opportunities available. Piedmont Tech, often a first choice for graduating high school seniors, encourages all interested students to visit the campus for a tour. Lander University Named Military Friendly School for Second Consecutive Year

Both recognitions are direct results of a strategic veterans initiative launched by the university upon the beginning of Dr. Richard Cosentino’s tenure as Lander president.

The initiative includes a dedicated veterans resource center where student veterans can study or relax as they connect with their fellow student veterans. It also includes commitments to provide advising and direction on all educational benefits, enrollment and registration assistance, and academic and career assistance.

Ninety Six Schools honor Veterans

Ninety Six High School and Edgewood Middle School honored veterans on Friday, Nov. 11 in the high school gymnasium. Emerald High School’s AFJROTC cadets under the direction of Colonel Bernard Taylor wowed local veterans, faculty, staff and students with their performance.

Triston Lawson belted out “God Bless the USA by Lee Greenwood and captivated the audience with his outstanding vocal performance. Triston is a senior at Emerald High School.

Lander University’s Jazz Ensemble takes the stage on Thursday, Nov. 17 at 8 p.m. in the Abney Cultural Center Auditorium. The program is FALS-Approved for students at the university. Admission is free and open to the public.

Student from Greenwood among GSSM Team taking First Place in NASA Challenge

Hartsville, SC – Students from the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) took first place at last week’s NASA Capillary Flow Challenge. Team “Snap, Crackle and Pop” was awarded the top prize during the closing ceremony of the American Society for Gravitational and Space Research (ASGSR) annual meeting in Cleveland on October 29.

Lander President, First Lady, Students and Staff Paint Parking Spot Purple for U.S. Service Members

A front-row parking spot permanently reserved for U.S. service members wounded in combat was painted purple, the color of the Purple Heart, this afternoon during an outdoor ceremony at Lander University.
