Former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Case Officer and Lander University English major Patrick Skinner returned to theGreenwoodcampus Nov. 17 to speak with students in Dr. Renee Love’s English class. Skinner, an avid reader and writer, explained that his success in the field is based largely upon being an English undergraduate student.

Public invited to attend Arbor Day Ceremony at Lander University

Lander University will continue its longstanding tradition of celebrating South Carolina’s Arbor Day, which occurs this year on Friday, Dec. 5, with a tree-planting ceremony on campus.

The annual ceremony will take place that morning at 11 a.m., with events beginning in front of the university’s Laura Lander Hall, also known as Old Main.

National Program Developer Comes to Piedmont Tech

Piedmont Technical College recently hosted a training for local educators entitled “TypeFocus Workshop: Personality Type Theory and Application” based on the nationally recognized online personality type career exploration resource. Dave Wood, president of TypeFocus Internet Inc. from Victoria, Canada, presented to the more than 45 participants who attended the two-day event.

Congressman Jeff Duncan to Hold Congressional Hearing on Emergency Preparedness at Clemson University

WASHINGTON, DC - South Carolina Congressman Jeff Duncan will hold a Congressional Hearing at Clemson University at 1:00pm on Friday, November 21st on emergency preparedness. The hearing will focus on the importance of local, state, federal officials and non-profits working closely together during crisis situations, and preparing for threats like natural disasters, public health emergencies like Ebola, cyber-attacks, energy infrastructure issues, among other concerns.

Criminal Justice Program Offers Solid Foundation

Legal, law enforcement and corrections jobs are hot commodities in today's job market. The criminal justice program at Piedmont Technical College provides students with the training they need to get started in these exciting careers.

“We try to make the curriculum as hands-on as we can, because most of the time, students really grasp the concepts when they put them into practice,” said Josh Lindsay, program director.

Two Piedmont Technical College students recently made the trip to Washington, D.C. as part of the Community College Undergraduate Research Initiative (CCURI) conference. The trip allowed students to make presentations at the Capital on the importance of undergraduate research.

Employees from across SC converge on John de la Howe School

More than 70 state and municipal employees from across South Carolina converged on the John de la Howe School campus Thursday for training in the Certified Public Managers program.

Stephanie Duncan of Columbia, Training Director in the South Carolina Office of Human Resources, said the state has been holding training at John de la Howe on an annual basis for the past dozen years.

“Speaking Bodies” will be the theme when Lander University’s Dance Company performs in concert on Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 17 and 18. Performances both nights will be in Lander’s Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center Auditorium, beginning at 8 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public.

Senators visit John de la Howe School

McCORMICK—Three state senators recently made a visit to the campus of John de la Howe School, which serves at-risk children from across South Carolina.

Sen. Wes Hayes (R-York), Sen. Shane Massey (R-Edgefield/Aiken/Saluda/McCormick/Lexington) and Sen. Billy O’Dell (R-Anderson/Abbeville/Greenwood) spent several hours touring the 217-year-old institution, inspecting facilities and speaking with students, staff and trustees. Grant Gibson, a member of the Senate Finance Committee staff, also participated in the tour.

NS Elementary Student's food drive helps local food pantry

Ninety Six Elementary School recently held a food drive for the Ninety Six Food Pantry as a part of their community outreach initiative.  Each of the third, fourth, and fifth grade classes participated in collecting over 750 items.  Representatives from the student council delivered and stocked the food at the pantry.  Volunteers from the pantry met the student council and showed each student how to date, organize, and shelve the food.

Registrations are being accepted for a course sponsored by Lander University’s Continuing Education office to prepare high school students to take the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). Classes will begin on Tuesday, Feb. 3.

Lander's Jamison Nicklaus gets a close-up view of the White House while engaged in a Washington internship

Jamison Nicklaus, of Simpsonville, a senior political science major at Lander University, took advantage of an opportunity to attend a social event on the South Lawn of the White House in September. Nicklaus is spending the fall semester working and studying in the nation’s capital as an intern in the Office of Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs of the U.S. Commerce Department. He is the 11th Lander student accepted into the Washington Semester program sponsored by the University of South Carolina Honors College.

Wilson visits Brewer's Bullying Prevention Kickoff to share The Bully and Me

On Thursday, October 23rd, Brewer welcomed a special guest author for their Bullying Prevention Week Kickoff.  Isaac Wilson, author of the book The Bully and Me, visited the school to share some of his experiences with bullying.  Wilson spoke during a pep raly highlighted by cheers from the Brewer Cheerleading squad and dances by the Brewer Step Team.

Martin follows his destiny to Funeral Service

As a young high school student, David Martin had his goals set. He knew what he wanted to do and had the plan on how to pursue it.

Turns out, he was a bit off on the path he would take toward his destiny.

When Martin was in school, he wanted to go into advertising, but he took a part-time job at a local funeral home in Pineville, W. Va. during the summer before his senior year.

GREENVILLE — Cars that drive themselves, electric vehicles that charge wirelessly and other automotive technology that once seemed straight out of science fiction will be put in the spotlight this week as automotive experts from throughout the Southeast gather in Greenville this Thursday Oct 30 and Friday Oct 31.

Lander University’s Study Abroad program has undergone a change in leadership with the retirement of director Dr. DeWitt Stone Jr. The great-grandson of Lander founder, The Rev. Samuel Lander, Stone recently became a member of Lander’s Board of Trustees.

Cambridge pinks out to honor those with cancer

Cambridge Academy Middle School and Varsity Volleyball Teams presented Self Regional Foundation with a check for $520.00 for their Cancer Fund. The teams sponsored a school-wide "Pink Out" day and Volleyball games. They raised the money through a bake sale and "Paws for a Cause" a paw purchased
in memory or honor of someone with breast cancer.
