On February 1st the local chapter of the Blue Knights Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club received two awards during the Special Olympics South Carolina 2014 Annual Leadership Conference held in Myrtle Beach. For the last three years the Blue Knights have hosted a charity poker run to support Special Olympics Area 5 athletes. These efforts resulted in the club being awarded Outstanding Special Event and also awarded for Outstanding Fundraiser both for 2013.

Shelby Benson, Director Area 5, which consists of the following counties here in the lake lands area, Greenwood, Laurens, Newberry, Abbeville and McCormick, had nominated the club. Ms. Benson was also awarded by the Special Olympics of South Carolina as Best Area for the Year among the sixteen Special Olympics programs in the state. Representing the Blue Knights SC VII were Al Duncan, SC Highway Patrol, president of the club and Terry Greenfield, club secretary and recently retired from the Greenwood Police Department.

The Blue Knights consist of active and retired law enforcement officers from the surrounding area. Agencies such as the SC Highway Patrol, Sheriff Offices from Laurens, Newberry and Abbeville, city police from Greenwood, Laurens, Due West and Lander University Public Safety.

The club is currently preparing for the 2014 Charity Run on April 12th.
