GREENWOOD, SC – David Stumbo has defeated Ben Shealy in the 8th Circuit Solicitor’s race with 58% of the vote across Greenwood, Abbeville, Laurens and Newberry counties.
Stumbo, the Republican candidate, defeated Shealy, the Democratic candidate, in Greenwood, Laurens and Abbeville counties. The two were neck and neck in Newberry County.
“I have two lasting images from this election,” Stumbo said Tuesday night following his victory. “One is meeting with a group of law enforcement officers here in Greenwood and them asking me if I would consider running for Solicitor because they felt that they did not have good representation in the courtroom. The second is of me and my wife on our knees after the kids were in bed asking our great God if this is what he wanted us to do. Tonight, I think we have that answer.”
Stumbo defeated incumbent Jerry Peace, who has served as Solicitor for the past eight years, in the June Republican primary.
Stumbo said there were many people to thank, but took the time to thank one very special person.
“None of this could have been possible without one person,” Stumbo said. “That person is my beautiful wife Vanessa.”
Stumbo also had a message for those in the 8th circuit breaking the law.
“Let me send a message to those terrorizing our streets,” Stumbo said. “We’re coming for you. We ARE going to keep our families safe.”
