GREENWOOD, SC – A 6-year-old girl was reportedly attacked by a pit bull on Belle Oaks Drive just before 5 p.m. Monday afternoon. It is the second attack by a pit bull in Greenwood County in the last week. The first one left a woman dead after she was attacked by a pit bull while babysitting her grandchildren.
According to a report from the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office, police were dispatched to 119 Dowling Circle in response to an animal bite. The victim’s father told deputies he and his daughter were out walking and riding bikes when they came across an older male walking two dogs, one of which was a pit bull, at the intersection of Belle Pines Drive and Belle Oaks Drive West.
According to the report, the victim’s father asked the man if the dogs were friendly and the man replied that they were. The victim’s father then petted the pit bull on the head without incident. When the daughter laid her bike down, the pit bull lunged at her, biting her on the ear. The victim’s father hit the dog in the head, at which time the dog released the girl’s ear and bit her foot. The victim’s father again hit the pit bull on the head repeatedly until it released its grasp on his daughter’s foot.
The report states that the victim’s father then began caring for his daughter and the man with the dogs walked off. Deputies canvassed the neighborhood and located the two dogs at a home on Belle Oaks Drive. The man that was walking the dogs told deputies that the pit bull he was walking did bite a child. The only explanation he offered according to the report, was, “the dog remembers faces.”
The owner of the dogs did not have vaccination records for the animals, but told deputies that they had been properly vaccinated at the mobile Pet Vacc in May.
Two witnesses told deputies that the man walking the dogs did not attempt to pull the dog off of the girl either time it bit her.
The girl was taken to the emergency room at Self Regional Healthcare to receive treatment for her injuries.
GCSO is investigating the incident. No criminal charges have been filed at this time.
