Two men are facing multiple drug charges after they were arrested by Lander University Police on Friday night.
According to a report from the Lander University Police Department, police observed a black Grand Marquis sitting in a Lander University parking lot on Stanley Avenue with two men sitting inside and a large amount of trash outside the car on Friday night at about 9 p.m.
According to the report, police approached the vehicle and asked the passenger if the trash belonged to him. The passenger, later identified as Nyjajuan Devonte Jeter, 20, of 113 Forest Circle in Union, got out of the vehicle when asked to pick up the trash. At that time, police observed two unopened bottles of liquor in the floorboard.
The report states that when the driver, later identified as Deion Dantrell Smith, 20, of 804 W. Main St. in Union, exited the vehicle to speak with police, officers observed a half-smoked “blunt” in the ashtray. A search of the vehicle turned up 33 grams of marijuana in four separate plastic bags. Both Jeter and Smith claimed that the marijuana belonged to them.
According to the report, Smith and Jeter said that they were on the Lander campus meeting a cousin for Alumni Week. The cousin confirmed to police that the two men were there to meet him, but denied any knowledge of the liquor and marijuana.
Smith and Jeter told police that they were students at Coastal Carolina University. Officials at Coastal Carolina said that neither Jeter nor Smith is enrolled at the college.
Jeter has been charged with minor in possession of liquor, possession with intent to distribute marijuana and possession with intent to distribute marijuana in close proximity to a school. Smith has been charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana and possession with intent to distribute marijuana in close proximity to a school.
