A Greenwood woman has been arrested after her newborn baby allegedly tested positive for marijuana.
According to a report from the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were notified by the Department of Social Services on March 20 that a baby born on March 6 had tested positive for marijuana. The mother of the child is Tavarshia Shanice Deal, 24, of 710 Sweetwater Road in Greenwood.
According to the report, tests conducted on the meconium at Self Regional Medical Center following the baby’s birth tested positive for marijuana. Deal told deputies that she used marijuana two to three times each month while she was pregnant to help with her appetite, but that she stopped using marijuana two months before the baby was born.
According to the report, Deal admitted to doctors at the hospital that she had used marijuana while pregnant. Deal told deputies that she knew it was wrong, but she was having trouble eating and needed to provide a balanced meal for the child.
Deal has been charged with unlawful neglect of a child.
