***UPDATE May 19, 2:30 p.m.***
Greenwood County Coroner Sonny Cox has ruled that Price accidentally drowned following an autopsy performed in Anderson Sunday morning.
A Greenwood man drowned Saturday night when he was fishing at a pond off of Phoenix Road and lost his balance, falling into the water.
According to officials with the Department of Natural Resources, three men were fishing, two in a boat and one on the shoreline, when one of the men lost his balance and fell from the boat. The man went under and surfaced again, but was unable to get back to the boat before going back under the water.
Greenwood County Coroner Sonny Cox has identified the victim as John Allen Price, 50, of 611 Florida Ave. in Greenwood. No official determination on the cause of death has been made. An autopsy will be performed Sunday in Anderson, Cox said.
Divers searched the two acre pond for more than two and a half hours before discovering Price’s body. As many as five rescue divers were in the pond performing the search before discovering the body at about 11:30 p.m. DNR officials said they were unsure if alcohol or drugs were involved, but did not see any indication that they were.
