Two people are dead after the second murder-suicide within the last week in Greenwood County.
According to investigators, deputies responded to 2906 Nation Rd., Hodges, just after midnight Tuesday morning after receiving a report of an unknown victim being shot at the residence. Officers with the Ware Shoals Police Department were the first to arrive at the residence and discovered lights on at the residence, but could not get anyone to the door. Once deputies from the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office arrived, officers entered the home.
According to investigators, officers found a woman, identified by Greenwood County Coroner Sonny Cox as 41-year-old Felicia Yvette Rayford, in the dining room of the residence. Officers found Rayford in the floor with blood on her head and neck. Officers checked for a pulse, but did not get one. Rayford was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to investigators, the suspect, identified by Abbeville County Coroner Ronnie Ashley as 46-year-old Charles Ray Belcher, called a friend and told her that he had killed Rayford and had left the residence.
According to officials with the Abbeville County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to 234 Devore Rd. at about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday morning after receiving a call about a possible suicide. When deputies arrived, they found Belcher dead at the residence from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The investigation is being conducted by the State law Enforcement Division, the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office, the Abbeville County Sheriff’s Office, the Greenwood County Coroner’s Office and the Abbeville County Coroner’s Office. Autopsies for both Rayford and Belcher are scheduled for Tuesday.
This makes the second murder-suicide within the week in Greenwood County. Last Tuesday, 27-year-old Bryan Sweatt killed his girlfriend, her parents and two of her nephews before turning the gun on himself at a residence on Callison Highway.
