Greenwood County is looking to continue its dominance of the annual City vs. County Food Drive. Greenwood County has not lost to the City of Greenwood in more than a decade.
The annual food drive benefits the Food Bank of Greenwood County, the Greenwood Soup Kitchen and Greater Greenwood United Ministries. The Can of Corn trophy is awarded to the winner of the annual friendly competition between the city and county. Councilwoman Edith Childs collected money - $13, to be exact - from each county council member at their last meeting in an effort to secure yet another victory for the county and the three organizations which the food drive benefits.
While many love to cheer for the underdog. Getting behind the favorite will not only keep the Can of Corn trophy on display at county offices, but also help many people who are unsure of where they will get their next meal.
The final weigh-in will at the Greenwood Framer’s Market near the civic center on Jan. 27 at 10 a.m. You can make donations to help the county retain the Can of Corn trophy at the county manager’s office, located at room 114 in Park Plaza. If you just can’t resist supporting an underdog, you can drop donations off to help the city earn its second victory ever in the competition at the city manager’s office at City Hall. Whichever side you choose, the real winners will be the three organizations and the citizens of Greenwood County whom they serve.
