Greenwood County authorities are warning residents to beware of a new phone scam known as the “One-Ring Phone Scam” that is circulating the United States.
“This new scam targets people who are curious about who called them, especially the younger generation,” said Capt. Dale Kittles of the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office. “Young people tend to be more curious about who called them and don’t leave messages.”
The new scam uses computer-generated calling to call cell phones from an overseas number. The phone only rings once, just enough to generate a missed call. Victims then call the number back and discover it is an adult entertainment line that generates some hefty charges on the victim’s phone bill. According to the Better Business Bureau, victims are charged an international call fee as high as $19.95 then charges as much as $9 per minute for the unwanted “service.” The BBB says many of the calls from numbers with area codes 268, 809, 876, 284 and 473.
Kittles said there is little that can be done if you incur charges after calling one of these numbers back because the calls come from outside the U.S.
“The best thing to do is not call a number back that you don’t recognize,” Kittles said. “If you can’t resist the temptation to call a number back, you should type it into Google and see if it is one of the phone numbers being used in this scam or any other scam. The safest bet is not to call back numbers you don’t recognize.”
