A Greenwood man has been charged with voluntary manslaughter after a physical altercation left another man dead.

Travis Senchale Johnson, 30, has been charged with voluntary manslaughter following an April 17 altercation that occurred near the intersection of Grace Street and E. Cambridge Ave.

Greenwood County Coroner Sonny Cox has identified the victim as 50-year-old James Anthony Goodine of Seneca. Goodine died at about 1 p.m. April 25 at Self Regional Medical Center as the result of blunt force trauma.

According to a Greenwood Police Department report, a number of 911 calls were received about a fight in the middle of the intersection. When police arrived, they found Goodine lying unconscious in the roadway and Johnson sitting on a curb near Goodine. Police and EMS personnel were able to briefly bring Goodine back to consciousness, but Goodine was unconscious when he was transported to the hospital.

According to the report, Johnson told police Goodine had previously been in a relationship with his sister and Goodine had recently been calling and threatening his sister. Johnson said he saw Goodine drive by his sister’s house so he got in his car and followed Goodine. When the two vehicles reached the intersection, both men exited their vehicles. Johnson said Goodine swung at him three times and missed before he struck Goodine in the head with a closed fist. Goodine collapsed to the ground and Johnson sat down on the curb next to him.

Johnson was initially charged with first degree assault and battery in connection with the incident. Johnson was taken to the Greenwood County Detention Center, where he received a bond of $15,000 cash or surety. Johnson posted the bond on April 18 and was released. Johnson was arrested again on Monday and charged with voluntary manslaughter after Goodine died.

Thanks Jennifer for posting your comment. I hope your comment will help my cousin get a lesser charge.

I saw this altercation happen and I would have never thought that the younger man would have been charged with anything. The older man started the fight by getting out of his vehicle first and swinging on the other. Johnson did hit the man and pulled over calmly and talked to the owner of the furniture store on the corner. It looked like he was waiting on the police.
