The Women’s Leadership Council (WLC) of the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce will provide scholarships for two young women to attend the Columbia College’s Leadership Institute – Step Up Program for rising ninth graders.
WLC Chair, Donna Foster of Piedmont Technical College, mentioned that WLC supports this program each year to provide leadership development opportunities for young women in Greenwood County. The scholarship award includes tuition of $500, lodging, and meals on the Columbia College campus. The Institute will be held from Sunday, June 15 to Friday, June 20, 2014.
The Leadership Institute’s 24th summer program is designed to help young women develop essential leadership skills. Participants have the opportunity to discover their own special leadership gifts while building competencies in all aspects of leadership and business. The program offers team-based case studies, interactive workshops, assessment inventories, powerful female role models, meaningful community service projects, and personal and group feedback throughout the week. The week culminates with a graduation ceremony with family and friends.
One of WLC’s Steering Committee members is Elizabeth Garrison Rasor, a local entrepreneur and business owner. She attended the leadership institute when she was in high school and speaks highly of the program. Rasor recalled her experience and said, “The guest speakers were top notch. Hearing women leaders' stories was motivating and inspiring. I remember thinking to myself, 'I want to be a leader just like them.'”
Rasor continued, “The counselors were Columbia College students. What a great experience to be on a college campus with high-achieving college students! That part really got me excited about going to college. The lessons learned at the Leadership Institute have stuck, and several of those contacts I met at the program have remained friends over many years.”
