One arrested following boating incident

One man was arrested Monday night after authorities initially thought the man drowned following a boating accident near Summer Pointe on Lake Greenwood.

Michael Ianelli, 34, was arrested Monday by S.C. Department of Natural Resources and is facing a number of charges, including boating under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident, negligent operations and improper lookout, among others.

According DNR officials, Ianelli and a female were on a pontoon boat at about 4:15 p.m. when the boat struck a dock near Summer Pointe. Ianelli jumped from the boat just prior to the boat hitting the dock. While Ianelli and the female fled the scene, officials began searching the water assuming Ianelli had drowned. At about 5:30 p.m., with a DNR dive team en route to search for Ianelli’s body, DNR investigators learned Ianelli had jumped from the boat.

According to DNR officials, Ianelli, who is listed as homeless, went to his mother’s house. Investigator’s went to Ianelli’s mother’s house and saw fresh blood outside the house. Investigators obtained a search warrant for the home and found Ianelli inside. Ianelli confessed to operating the boat at the time of the incident. Ianelli was then placed under arrest.

Officials say the investigation into the incident is still ongoing. The female involved in the incident is not expected be charged, but investigators did not rule out the possibility of charges being filed against her following the completed investigation.
