Mother facing neglect charge

A Greenwood mother is facing achild neglect charge after she and her 5-year-old son reportedly tested positive for illegal drugs.

Mist Dawn, Robinette, 38, of 214 Sheffield Rd., was arrested Wednesday and charged with unlawful neglect to a child in connection with the incident.

According to a Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office report, agents with the Greenwood County Drug Enforcement Unit were contacted by officials with the S.C. Department of Social Services on April 21. DSS officials told agents that Robinette and her 5-year-old son had both tested positive on a drug test which utilized hair samples. Robinette tested positive for cocaine and benzodiazepines. The child tested positive for cocaine, benzoylecgonine and norcocaine.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, norcocaine is a very minor metabolite of cocaine, but is active and neurotoxic. Benzoylecgonine is also a metabolite of cocaine. Metabolites are substances formed by the body in order to metabolize another substance. Benzodiazepines belong to a class of drugs commonly used to treat anxiety, such as Lithium and Valium.
