Ware Shoals man accused of holding woman hostage

A Ware Shoals man was arrested over the weekend after police say he threatened to kill his girlfriend of she left the house.

Jeffrey Earl Dutton, 43, of 20 Edgewood Drive Ware Shoals, has been charged with kidnapping and criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature in connection with the incident.

According to a report from the Ware Shoals Police Department, police were dispatched to Dutton’s home on May 25 following a report that Dutton would not allow the victim to leave the house. The victim told police that Dutton had threatened to kill her if she left the house and she appeared very scared of Dutton. Police stayed while the victim packed her belongings. Dutton denied doing anything wrong when questioned about keeping the woman at the house.

According to the report, the victim gave police a full statement at the police station after packing her belongings. The victim said Dutton had been assaulting her for several days and accusing her of sleeping with his brother and other men in Ware Shoals. The ordeal began, the victim said, on May 19. The victim said Dutton threatened to kill her if she left the house numerous times. The victim also said Dutton boarded up the bedroom door and used padlocks to keep the victim inside the house. It is unclear from the report how the victim was finally able to contact police.
