Greenwood man charged in alleged sexual assault of teen
A Greenwood man has been charged in connection with an alleged sexual assault of a teen-aged girl and is the suspect in another assault involving a girl under the age of 10.
Gavin Sinclair Lites, 31, of 889 Hwy. 25 N., Edgefield, has been charged with first degree assault and battery and third degree criminal sexual conduct in connection with the incident.
According to reports from the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to a residence on Montague Avenue just before midnight on Aug. 5 in reference to a sexual assault. The victim’s mother told deputies she left her 17-year-old daughter with friends while she went to the bingo hall. When she arrived to pick up the girl, she could tell something was wrong by the way the girl was acting. The victim told deputies she was playing Uno with a friend, Lites and Lites’ wife. Whenever Lites’ wife would leave the room to check on the food she was cooking, the victim said Lites would kiss her. The victim said Lites sat down on her lap and said he wanted to have sex with her and took her into a bedroom and locked the door. The victim said Lites forced her to touch him and said she was scared and did not know what to do.
According to the reports, deputies met with Lites later the same night. Lites said he did nothing wrong and told deputies his wife was trying to set him up. Deputies could tell Lites was intoxicated. When asked, Lites told deputies he had been drinking and provided the victim with alcohol while they were playing Uno. Lites said the inly times he was alone with the victim was when his wife went to check on the food she was cooking. In the kitchen, deputies observed sausage, eggs and biscuits that had been prepared but not eaten. Lites’ wife said she had left the room several times while the food was cooking. After the last time she checked on the food, Lites’ wife said she came back to the bedroom and found the door locked. She said she forced her way into the bedroom and found Lites alone with the victim. Lites said the door was locked because the little kids kept bothering the two.
According to the reports, Lites is also a suspect in a case from April in which a girl under the age of 10 was assaulted. Deputies were first made aware of the alleged assault after being dispatched to a pediatrician’s office on May 27. The pediatrician told deputies that the child was brought in to be evaluated for symptoms of what was believed to be a venereal disease. Laboratory tests came back as positive for chlamydia. That case remains under investigation by the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office.
