Tyson takes reigns at Laurens Detention Center

Laurens, SC – Joe Tyson has been promoted to administrator at the Johnson Detention Center, replacing Chris Hudson who retired last month to pursue other career options.

Tyson began his career with the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office in September 2007 as a detention deputy.  He rose through the ranks, eventually serving as assistant jail administrator under Hudson.

Tyson graduated from Fernandina Beach High School in Florida.  He went on to attend Lake City Community College.  While in college, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp where served four years in the area of corrections.

Following his military service, Tyson worked for 25 years with the Florida Department of Corrections.

“Our goal here at the detention center will be to maintain a safe and secure environment for all of our inmates, staff, and the general public,” Tyson stated.  “We will strive to furnish programs in order for the inmates housed within our detention center, if they so choose, the chance to change their lifestyle and return to our communities as productive members of our society.”

Tyson noted that over 85 percent of the incarcerated population will eventually be released back into their communities.

“Major Tyson brings an incredible resume to this position,” Laurens County Sheriff Ricky Chastain said.  “We anticipate great things under his leadership.”
