PTC Student Awarded the G.B. Elledge Endowed Scholarship

Piedmont Technical College welding student and Greenwood resident Joseph Fleming was recently awarded the G.B. Elledge Endowed Scholarship. This scholarship is available to students enrolled in the Welding program. Selection is based on academic achievement and financial need.

Greenwood Resident Earns Two Scholarships
Lander University business administration major Evidence Mushaninga, center, has been presented with two scholarships for the upcoming school year — the Cecil J. and Jean T. McFerrin Scholarship, awarded on the basis of academic merit and leadership potential, and the Beta Gamma Sigma Scholarship, awarded to a Beta Gamma Sigma member selected by the Business Department faculty. 

Joining Mushaninga are Associate Professor of Accounting Dr. Joseph Krupka, left, and Dr. Robert Barrett, former dean of the College of Business.

PTC Students Awarded the La Puerta de Esperanza Scholarship

Five Piedmont Technical College students recently received the La Puerta de Esperanza Scholarship at the college’s annual scholarship luncheon.

La Puerta de Esperanza "The Door of Hope" is a compassionate ministry of the Greenwood Community Church of the Nazarene. The La Puerta de Esperanza Scholarship was established to help students who do not qualify for state or federal tuition aid.

Erin Watts named new Assistant Principal at Westview

Westview Middle School will add a new face to their administrative team for the 2017-2018 school year.

Erin Watts has been named as Assistant Principal at Westview. Watts was an Assistant Principal at Ninety Six High School for the last six years. During her 15 years in education, Watts has served as an administrator, school test coordinator, and high school math teacher.

Brewer Middle School will have a new face as principal next year.

Kathryn Benjamin has been named as the new Principal at Brewer Middle School.  “I’m honored to be selected to lead a school with such a rich history,” Benjamin said. “I look forward to working with the students, staff and stakeholders at Brewer as we continue to build upon a tremendous tradition of excellence. I’m confident that our collective efforts as a school community will have a positive impact on the learning and the lives of our students.”

Ninety Six child abuser sentenced to 20 years in prison

Eighth Circuit Solicitor David M. Stumbo announced Thursday that a Ninety Six man was sentenced to 20 years in prison following a hearing at the Abbeville County Courthouse Wednesday afternoon.

Man arrested for hitting woman in the face with board

On Monday, July 17, 2017 around 11pm Greenwood Sheriff Deputies responded to an assault incident on Eagle Trance in Greenwood.

As they arrive they find a victim sitting in the roadway bleeding from the head and face area.  A witness told deputies that he heard screaming, came to see what was happening and saw a man standing over the victim hitting her in the face and head with a closed fist.

Baby abandoned at Self Regional Hospital
Greenwood County Department of Social Services officials report that an infant was born on July 13, 2017, in Self Regional Hospital Greenwood County. The baby was abandoned and left in the care of medical professionals at the hospital on July 14, 2017.

Piedmont Agency on Aging hosting safe driver class
Piedmont Agency on Aging is hosting an AARP Safe Driver class on August 29th. The Safe Driver class will allow guests to learn about changes that naturally occur in aging and to discover strategies to compensate for those changes to be a safe driver. Persons who complete the 4 hour course receive a certificate to present to insurance companies for discounts on automobile insurance premiums.

Ann Hunter of Greenwood joins Clemson University Foundation board

Ann Hunter of Greenwood joined the Clemson University Foundation board of directors for a four-year term beginning July 1.

Hunter earned a Bachelor of Science (1980) and Master of Science (1982) in chemical engineering from Clemson. She previously worked for Union Carbide in Greenville and became a homemaker and full-time volunteer after the birth of her daughter, Rebecca, who also is a Clemson alumna. She met her husband, Wilson G. Hunter, while they were chemical engineering students at Clemson.

Harvley Scholarship Recipients Announced at Lander

Lander University students Cody Jordan, of Greenwood, left, and Gatlin Minick, of Hodges, have been announced as the winners of a G. Bonner and Martha B. Harvley Scholarship.

The scholarship is awarded annually to one or more Greenwood County residents majoring in business administration, based on character, academic record, and the recommendation of a high school or college teacher.
