The SC Bar Young Lawyers Division (YLD) is sponsoring its 16th annual Cinderella Project, which provides gently worn formal, bridesmaid and prom dresses for young women who lack the financial resources to buy a gown for their high school prom. Participants will have the opportunity to “shop” for dresses, jewelry and shoes at no cost.

Woman killed in accident involving deer

A woman was killed after another vehicle struck a deer knocking it into the windshield of a truck she was riding in.

According to Saluda County Coroner Keith Turner, 46-year-old Jennifer Fisher Wertz of Saluda died at the scene.  The accident occurred around 9:35 p.m. on Fruit Hill Road in Saluda.  Wertz was the passenger inside a truck along with two other family members when the accident occurred.

Students, faculty and staff at Piedmont Technical College gathered for a campus-wide Unity Feast Wednesday. The event kicked off a series of Black History Month events at the college. Steve Coleman, director of Genesis Initiatives, center, served as emcee for a trivia contest on significant moments in black history.

Lander ROTC Freshman Recognized by General as Outstanding Cadet

During a brief ceremony today at Lander University, Brig. Gen. Darrell J. Guthrie, incoming commander of the 104th Division, recognized freshman Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) student Jordan House, of Gilbert, as an outstanding cadet by presenting her with a challenge coin.

PTC Cardiovascular Technology Program Hosts Heart Health Event

Piedmont Technical College’s cardiovascular technology program recently hosted Think Heart Smart, a community heart health event.

The event offered a blood drive with The Blood Connection and free cardiovascular risk assessment and counseling provided by Self Regional Healthcare that included blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), cholesterol screenings and A1C testing. Also on hand were cardiovascular professionals providing informative presentations, including Dr. Paul Kim, licensed cardiologist with Piedmont Cardiology Associates, center, who spoke on recent advances in the management of heart disease.

Spartanburg Resident and Legendary High School Soccer Coach Named Distinguished Alumni of the Year by Lander University

Lander University’s Alumni Association has selected Greenwood native and longtime Spartanburg resident Frank Ridlehoover as recipient of its Distinguished Alumni of the Year Award.

The award is presented annually to an alumna or alumnus who has distinguished themselves in their chosen field; is involved with civic, cultural, educational, and/or church activities; and has manifested special interest in Lander University with their time, talents and resources.

Man forces his way into a home and assaults woman

Woman called police saying her ex-boyfriend forced his way into her home and assaulted her.

Clifton Rodrick Robinson, 42 of 547 Hackett Ave Apt 4, Greenwood SC was arrested and charged with burglary and 1st degree assault and battery.

Homeowner finds neighbor stealing power

Greenwood City Police were called to a residence on Church Street in Greenwood after a homeowner find a drop cord coming from a neighbors window plugged into an outlet outside his home.

Elizabeth Gail Fallaw, 31 of 115 Church Ave, Greenwood SC was arrested and charged with theft of electric current.

According to the police report, Fallaw told police she needed some power to charge her phone and only had it there for a few days.  After being questioned further she admitted she was also running a small table lamp with the power.

Destination Performing Arts Center celebrates ribbon cutting

The Greenwood Chamber celebrated a ribbon cutting for Destination Performing Arts Center (DPAC), owned and directed by Kara-Grace H. Lay and Julie F. Kirkland.  Located at 312 Montague Avenue, Destination Performing Arts Center opened its doors to students of all ages and experience in January 2016.

8 Facts You Should Know About the 2017 Solar Eclipse
1- Lander University is one of five official sites for South Carolina to be selected as an observation point for the eclipse, through a national research experiment known as Citizen CATE (Continental America Telescopic Eclipse). "This means that Lander will receive a set of observation/photography equipment to keep, valued at around $2,500," said Kelly Hughes, Technical Services Manager with Lander's Information Technology Services and Chair of the Solar Eclipse Planning Committee. "Training will be scheduled in April at South Carolina State University."

HospiceCare of the Piedmont Celebrates Valentine's Day

Valentine’s Day is celebrated at HospiceCare of the Piedmont by volunteers arranging beautiful rose bud vases.  The roses along with Valentine cards, provided by Ninety Six Elementary School and the children at First Baptist Church of Abbeville, will be delivered to patients in their homes and the Hospice House by hospice nurses and volunteers.

Valentine's Sweetheart Special - Adopt One, Get One

Abbeville man sentenced to life without parole in shooting

Eighth Circuit Solicitor David M. Stumbo announced Thursday that an Abbeville man was sentenced Wednesday evening to life without the possibility of parole for his role in a 2015 shooting.

A three-day trial culminated with a Greenwood County jury returning a guilty verdict on charges of attempted murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime against defendant Ontavious Plumer.
