Cambridge students take 1st place in State Sporting Clays competition

Congratulations to the Cambridge Academy Sporting Clays team. The students recently competed in the State Sporting Clays competition held at the Palmetto Shooting complex in Edgefield SC. 

The Middle School Girls finished 1st in the MS "New school" division and 2nd overall MS girls division.  The boys finished 1st place in the MS "New School" division.  The team has enjoyed a successful inaugural season.

Master Chef Competition to premier in Greenwood during Masters' Week

New to Greenwood during the week of the Masters is the Master Chef competition which will be hosted by the G. Frank

Russell Technology Center on Monday, April 3. In partnership with the culinary department of, local chefs will have the opportunity to compete in three categories (appetizer, entrée, and dessert) to have their winning selections featured in a Masters Chef dinner, which will be hosted by the Inn on the Square on Tuesday, April 4. Judges will be local corporate and golf personalities.

Ackerson-Stevens Inc. (ASI), a lumber company and manufacturer of custom moldings and flooring accessories, is expanding its existing Greenwood County operations. To accommodate the firm’s continued growth, ASI intends to create 15 new positions and make a capital investment of $490,000.

Child molester sentenced to 15 years in prison

Eighth Circuit Solicitor David M. Stumbo announced Thursday that a Greenwood man was sentenced to 15 years in prison after being found guilty of molesting a child for a number of years.

Howard James Woods Jr. was convicted of second degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor by a Greenwood County Jury following a two-day trial at the Greenwood County Courthouse.

Greenwood man sentenced to 20 years in prison for 2015 burglary spree

Eighth Circuit Solicitor David M. Stumbo announced Tuesday that a Greenwood man was sentenced to 20 years in prison following a string of burglaries that occurred across north Greenwood in 2015.

Gregory Harrison entered a guilty plea Monday morning just before he was scheduled to stand trial on more than 35 burglary related charges. Harrison pleaded guilty to five counts of second degree burglary.

A Greenwood man was arrested after admitting to police that he had sex with a minor knowingly.

Jonathan Ward Fetrow-Smith, 19 of 124 T Mobile Road, Greenwood SC was arrested and charged with criminal sexual conduct with a minor 3 degree.

STEMS Continues Tradition of Excellence at the 2017 Invention Convention

Westview Middle School’s Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics School (STEMS) have become regular winners at the annual Invention Conventions held in Greenville. This year proved to be another successful year for STEMS students. For the sixth consecutive year, Westview’s students and staff returned home with several awards.

Piedmont Technical College will sponsor an Open House Tuesday, March 21 in the James Medford Family Event Center on the Lex Walters Campus. Representatives from the more than 80 programs offered at PTC will be available to answer questions. There will be two sessions: a morning session from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and an evening session from 4-6 p.m.

Governor's School for Science & Math Students Win State Chess Tournament

Hartsville, SC – Five students from the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) won the team championship at the South Carolina Chess Association’s State Scholastic Chess Tournament in Mt. Pleasant on February 25, 2017. The team’s winning score of 14.5 surpassed defending champion D. W. Daniel High School, who finished second with 11.0.

Emergency crews are on scene of tractor trailer that has overturned down an embankment in Greenwood.  The accident occurred around 11:55 am at the location of Moorefield St and Freeman Road.

HospiceCare to host Camp Celebrate Hope

HospiceCare of the Piedmont will host its 22nd annual children’s grief camp, Camp Celebrate Hope.  It will be held May 6-7, 2017 at Camp Fellowship on Lake Greenwood.  Camp Celebrate Hope is open to children ages 6-14 who have experienced the death of a family member or a significant person in their lives.  The overnight camp will begin early on Saturday morning and end midday on Sunday.

Greenwood man fatally injured after being hit by train

A man was fatally injured after being struck by a train on Seaboard Avenue in Greenwood.  The incident occurred on Monday, March 5, 2017 at 5:20 p.m. 

According to Greenwood Coroner Sonny Cox, 24-year-old Nicholas Trever Hartley of Greenwood SC was walking along the rail road tracks on Seaboard Ave, when he was struck by an oncoming train.

Hartley succumbed to his injuries after being transported to Self Regional Healthcare.
