BBQ and Blues Music To Fill Uptown Greenwood

85 competition BBQ teams.  21 national and international blues musicians.  One of the south’s largest BBQ and blues festivals is set for Uptown Greenwood, South Carolina July 7 – 10, 2016.  The South Carolina Festival of Discovery is in its 16th year and presented by Carolina Pride Foods.

Piedmont Technical College’s series of program showcases continues on Thursday, June 30 with an exhibition of the programs in the industrial technology and engineering technology division. The showcase will be held from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in the James Medford Family Event Center on the Lex Walters Campus-Greenwood.

Calling All Hot Dog Eating Competitors

So you think you can put away many hot dogs!  Well here’s your chance to prove it and take home the SC Festival of Stars Hot Dog Eating Championship Trophy.  This competition is sponsored by Carolina Pride and will be held during the Festival of Stars in Ninety Six at 6:30 p.m. at the shelter in the park.  All contestants must be at least 15 years old.

Laboratory Fellows Complete Training Program at GGC

The Greenwood Genetic Center (GGC) recognized three graduating fellows from the Center’s Medical Genetics Training Program at a statewide meeting on Wednesday. Katrina Simmons, PhD (Biochemical Genetics), Abbas Padeganeh, PhD, (Cytogenetics), and Raymond Louie, PhD (Molecular Genetics) have completed two years of fellowship training beyond their doctoral-level work in preparation to lead a diagnostic laboratory.

Pet Spotlight: Meet Neil & Monkey

Neil is a young Shepherd blend whose yellow tan coat, black muzzle, and brown ears make him a visual standout.  Dogs and children are his favorite companions and he has the perfect amount of energy for easy training and fun playing. 

It's possible that he did not enjoy much fun with people during his earlier life, so he performs his own people "vetting" before revealing his silly, warm, and cuddly side.  Rolling and stretching his body on the grass is one of his favorite activities because it feels so darn good.  Neil is ready for a new home and hoping for the person or family who will come and sweep him off his paws.

Lander Psychology Club raises funds for Beyond Abuse

Student members of Lander University’s Psychology Club recently held a fundraising event to benefit Beyond Abuse in Greenwood, which is dedicated to eliminating sexual violence and child abuse through awareness, advocacy and action. The organization provides services in Greenwood, Abbeville and Laurens counties.

GGC technologist invited to speak at national meeting, 4 years in a row

Teresa Thompson, supervisor in the Greenwood Genetic Center’s Biochemical Genetics Laboratory, has been invited to provide a platform presentation at the Association of Genetic Technologists (AGT) meeting in Los Angeles next week. An honor, to be sure, but this is becoming routine for Teresa whose work has caught the attention and respect of the AGT organizers for four years in a row.

You can easily read today’s news, but then struggle to read a child’s book aloud.

For someone with aphasia, this wouldn’t be unusual.

Aphasia is a language disorder that can affect a person’s ability to communicate. It can impair a person’s ability to speak, read, listen, or write – but it does not influence intelligence. Nearly 1 million people in the United States live with aphasia today.

BCT Is Building the Future

It’s not everyday that you get dirty when attending classes at Piedmont Technical College. Unless you are enrolled in the Building Construction Technology program.

Students in the BCT program are not only learning about construction, they are putting it to use. They are building a house.

“It takes a lot of fortitude to go out with $100,000 and a group of students and build a house,” said Bobby Roche, instructor/coordinator for the BCT division.

Ali Wins Young Faculty Scholar Award

Lander University Assistant Professor of Computer Science Dr. Farha Ali has some impressive publications, as one would expect of the winner of Lander’s Young Faculty Scholar Award.

     Her article, “The Smart Surface Network: A Bus-Based Approach to Dense Sensing,” appeared last year in the scholarly journal, Computer Networks. Other articles have appeared in Journal of Technology, Knowledge and Society and International Journal of Pervasive Computing and Communications.
