2014 Greenwood Reads

The Greenwood County Library and its partners are excited to announce the 2014 Greenwood Reads selection is Someone Knows My Name by Lawrence Hill. Winner of the Commonwealth Writers Prize and an Oprah pick, the novel tells the compelling story of Aminata Diallo. Warriors for Christ Stand Up for Children event coming to a neighborhood near you

The annual “Stand Up” Day event sponsored by the Warriors for Christ, a non-profit group, supported by local churches and individuals, will be Saturday, September 20th.  This program is scheduled to start at 12:00 noon and end around 2:00 in the afternoon.  The event will be in designated areas in the following counties of Abbeville, Greenwood, Laurens, Newberry and Saluda with over 20 community sites designated.

Clemson's Upstate Writing Project hosts conference for rural teachers as part of federally funded Investing in Innovation grant

Upstate Writing Project will bring together teachers from Florence 2, Greenwood 51, and Union school districts for a conference at the University Center of Greenville Thursday, Sept. 18 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Noted literacy expert Jeff Wilhelm will train teachers on improving students’ writing skills for college and career readiness.

Empty Bowls, Full Stomachs

The Greenwood Soup Kitchen served around 40,000 hot meals last year, a nearly 70 percent increase over just four years ago. It was an idea from some local potters that sparked the annual Empty Bowls fundraiser which allowed the soup kitchen to keep up with the growing demand for their services.

Lander schedules its president's State of the University address

Lander University President Daniel Ball will deliver his annual State of the University Address on Monday, Sept. 22, at 4 p.m., in Lander’s Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center Auditorium. It will be the final State of the University presentation of his presidency.

Ball notified the Board of Trustees in March that he will retire in June of 2015 after having served 15 years as Lander’s chief executive officer.

Greenwood County Seeking Input on Hazard Mitigation Plan Update

Greenwood County is in the beginning stages of updating its Hazard Mitigation Plan as required by the Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA) and is seeking community input.

Greenwood County Emergency Management Coordinator George McKinney met with representatives from different agencies Sept. 9 at the Upper Savannah Council of Governments (USCOG), which is assisting Greenwood as well as Abbeville, Edgefield, Laurens and McCormick counties with Hazard Mitigation Plan updates.

Morningside celebrates Assisted Living Week
Morningside Assisted Living has been very busy today as they hosted their 4th Annual Cornhole Tournament and Appreciation Day.  “Each year we hold this event to recognize and thank our local civil service” said Dawn Amerson, Morningside Executive Director, “and whoever wins, we (Morningside) will donate $200 to the charity of their choice-in their name”.  The winning team also gets a large trophy and bragging rights.

A woman believed to be involved in a number of thefts of ATVs and other recreational vehicles across Greenwood and Laurens counties has been extradited to Greenwood County to face charges after being arrested in Laurens County earlier this year.
