Lander Radio Adds Voice to College Radio Day

XLR Radio, the broadcasting voice of Lander University, will observe College Radio Day on Friday, Oct. 3, making it one of an estimated 700 stations in 43 countries to take part in the event.

CRD President Peter Kreten said that College Radio Day, which is being observed for the fourth year, is “a reminder that despite some stations being sold off, college radio is still alive and kicking!”

Race the Helix, an annual 5K race and 1 mile run/walk to benefit the Greenwood Genetic Center (GGC) Foundation received a major gift this week. Affymetrix, a leader in genomics analysis whose mission is to enable the translation of biological knowledge into routine practice, presented $5,000 to Greenwood’s Stephen and Jodi Shenal on Monday.

Country song written by locals continues climbing chart

A local group of songwriters are very excited that a song they recently wrote is doing well in Nashville. Five weeks ago GwdToday first posted an article about the 'Moonshine' song written by Dwayne Moore of Ninety Six, Prevo Rodgers Jr. of Saluda and Travis Smith from Woodruff. The song debuted at #33 on the ICEMAN's TOP 40 show out of Nashville and has remained in the Top 40 now for five weeks coming in at #29 last night.

Emergency Management Director says all citizens have preparedness capabilities

When Greenwood County Emergency Management Director George McKinney spoke to a group of senior citizens at Piedmont Agency on Aging Tuesday, he asked how many other emergency managers were in the room.  Out of dozens in attendance, two seniors raised their hands, but McKinney said the room was full of emergency managers.  “How many of you all have had a flat tire?” he asked.  This time, almost everybody raised their hands.

Lander's president delivers his final State of the University address

Lander University President Dr. Daniel Ball delivered the final State of the University Address of his presidency on Monday, Sept. 22, and he gave some parting advice to faculty, staff and his successor. Ball will retire as Lander’s president at the end of June 2015, after serving 15 years as the university’s chief executive.

He encouraged them to maintain integrity and quality; to be good citizens of the Greenwood community; to continue to prepare students to work and “to be.”
