Sixteen District 50 Students Recognized as SCPASS or SC READY Max Scorers

Sixteen Greenwood School District 50 students were recognized for achieving a maximum score on the South Carolina Palmetto Assessment of State Standards (SCPASS) test or South Carolina College-and Career-Ready Assessments (SC READY) test at the September 18th Board of Trustees meeting.

Greenwood Premier Cinema 10 celebrates Grand Re-Opening
The Greenwood SC Chamber joined the Greenwood Premiere Cinema 10 in celebrating their Grand Re-Opening with a ribbon cutting on Thursday, September 21st. The management team at Premiere celebrated the ribbon cutting with free popcorn and door prizes for all! 

Premiere Cinema 10 is a movie theatre playing first-run films, with 3D capability, digital sound and stadium seating. If you’re looking for great entertainment or to check out the new renovations, be sure to visit them at 533 Bypass 72 NW or call (864) 943-0101.

Smoot Recognized for 50 Years of Hard Work and Service

District Office Front Receptionist Bettye Smoot was recognized at the September Board of Trustees meeting with a Certificate of Appreciation for 50 years of hard work and service in Greenwood School District 50.

Mrs. Smoot began working in District 50 as a receptionist on September 11, 1967. During her 50 years in District 50, she has served as the first face and voice of the Administrative Offices.

Lander announces new athletics fundraiser for 2017-18

Lander Athletics announced the launch of a new fundraiser to enhance athletic scholarships and operating budgets today. 

The athletic department will be selling numbered golf balls over the following months, culminating with "The Drop" on Saturday, April 28, 2018, at 6:30 p.m. at Dolny Stadium. All sold golf balls will be dropped and cash prizes will be awarded to the nine participants whose balls land closest to the pin. Prize money for winning tickets will be provided by ball sales. The event will be conducted by the Lander Foundation.

The Board of Trustees of Greenwood School District 50 will meet for a Special Called Board meeting on Monday, Sept 25, 2017 at 6 p.m. in the Leadership Center at the District Office.  District Office is located at 1855 Calhoun Road, Greenwood. 

Only item on the agenda is the Superintendent Evaluation.

Eighth Circuit Solicitor David M. Stumbo announced Thursday that a Greenville man received the maximum sentence after pleading guilty to calling in a bomb threat to a local women’s shelter.

Rep John McCravy recognizes members of Hodges-Cokesbury Volunteer FD

HODGES, SC – This Tuesday, Rep. McCravy commended members of the Hodges-Cokesbury Volunteer Fire Department for a combined 200 years of service to the town of Hodges.

Among those recognized were two of the fire department’s founding members: Hubert Minor and Johnny Reeves, each with 41 years of experience. Both are founding members of the Hodges-Cokesbury Volunteer Fire Dept. “That’s the longest service record I’ve seen at any volunteer fire department yet!” Rep. McCravy announced.

Greenwood City Police are investigating a man's death following an apparent domestic incident Monday. Officers responded to a call of a man who had possibly been cut and was bleeding profusely.

Open house event at McCormick's "Cat Haven"

The Humane Society of McCormick County invites you to an open house and ribbon cutting ceremony for its new “Cat Haven”, Sunday September 24th from 11 am to 3 pm. The new dedicated shelter for cats is the latest addition to HSMC’s 50 plus acre refuge at 1351 Hammond Street, McCormick and represents several years of planning, tireless fundraising and hard physical labor by volunteers and supporters. The Cat Haven joins the already in place dog shelter, agility yard and feral cat enclosure and will afford cats a safe and comfortable temporary home while they await adoption to their forever family.

Lander announces $500 book scholarship prize through BLUE Army app

GREENWOOD – Lander Athletics has announced a partnership with University Enrollment Management to offer two $500 book scholarships through the BLUE Army fan loyalty rewards app. 

The five full-time students who accumulate the most points through the app will be entered into a random drawing that will take place on December 4 during the women's basketball game against Converse.

Lander men's golf head coach Roger "Chipper" Bagwell announced Thursday that he will retire at the end of the 2017-18 campaign after spending 13 seasons as the team's head coach and 40 years on the campus of Lander as a student, administrator and coach.

Man urinating in parking lot arrested for indecent exposure

Security officers at Self Regional Hospital detained a man after urinating in the parking lot until Greenwood City Police arrived and placed him under arrest.

Kenneth Ross Blizzard, 54 was arrested and charged with indecent exposure.  According to the police report, security officers say they encountered Blizzard urinating in the parking lot without making an attempt to conceal himself as he was fully exposed in plain view.

Irma winds take aim on trees throughout Greenwood County
Greenwood was extremely lucky as we only received a hint of Irma’s wrath that was felt from the Florida Keys through several southern states.  With occasional gust of winds up to 30 to 50 mph in areas, Greenwood largest issues was with the dozens of trees falling.
