80 Employers Attending Wednesday's Job Fair; Workshops Include Social Media and Other Topics

Approximately 80 employers who are hiring or expect to be hiring within the next three months will be meeting job seekers during the Upper Savannah Regional Job Fair Wednesday at Greenwood Mall. 8th Annual Greenwood Young Life Sporting Clay Shoot, Oct 8

The 8th Annual Greenwood Young Life Sporting Clay Shoot is a fundraiser held on Saturday, October 8th. Young Life has been in Greenwood for 21 years and has been taking quality adult friendships and Christ's message of hope to our county's teenagers. This Sporting Clays fundraiser is a great way to partner with a ministry that is making a difference in the lives of kids.

Red Cross and Greenwood firefighters collaborate on fire safety program

Members of the Greenwood Fire Department and staff and volunteers from the American Red Cross Upstate Chapter joined forces on Saturday. Sept.24, and installed 48 free smoke alarms in homes in five Greenwood neighborhoods. The project was part of the Home Fire Campaign conducted by the Red Cross and its partners to teach people how to be prepared for and protect themselves against a house fire. This was the second so-called “fire alarm blitz” in Greenwood.

Man drowns after jumping from bridge

SC Department of Natural Resources along with several other local emergency teams began searching for someone who reportedly jumped off the Harris Landing Bridge into Lake Greenwood.  That person has now been recovered.

SEC Urges Voters to Prepare for November 8 General Election

COLUMBIA, SC – State and local voter registration and elections officials are using the month of September to encourage voters to prepare for the November 8 General Election.

"During the month of September, election officials across the State of South Carolina are focused on encouraging voters to register to vote or update their addresses, educating voters on what they need to bring with them to the polls, and helping voters learn more about what offices and candidates will be on their ballot before they get to the voting booth," Andino said.

Piedmont Technical College President Announces Retirement

Dr. Ray Brooks, president of Piedmont Technical College, has announced plans to retire on June 30, 2017, at the end of the current academic year.

Brooks made his plans official in a meeting with the college's Area Commission on Tuesday evening. He has led the institution since March 2008.

George Piersol, PTC Area Commission Chair said, "Dr. Brooks' focus on creating the right environment for student success has had a huge impact on Piedmont Technical College."

"The Commission is appreciative for his experienced leadership over the last eight years, and we are fully supportive of the important initiatives begun during his tenure," he said.

Greenwood DSS Office Closing Early Thursday for Maintenance

Due to a building maintenance issue, the Greenwood County office of South Carolina Department of Social Services (DSS) at 1118 Phoenix Street, Greenwood, SC 29648 will close at 4 pm, one hour early, on Thursday September 22nd, 2016. The office will re-open at 8:30 am Friday as usual. 

“There will be no interruption in services,” said DSS Greenwood County Director Robin Smith. “Economic Services and Human Services staff will be working remotely where possible. And our child abuse hotline will be temporarily forwarded to another office.”

Adult USTA Tennis tournament in Greenwood coming in November

Good news for Greenwood tennis enthusiasts, a new USTA (United States Tennis Association) sanctioned tournament event will be held at The Links at Stony Point on Lake Greenwood this November.  Tournament Director and Stony Point tennis pro, Lori Flick announced the Brian O’Reilly Memorial Veteran’s Day Tennis tournament will take place over Veteran’s Day weekend this year, Nov 11-13.

In light of the upcoming one percent Greenwood Capital Project Sales Tax referendum on the ballot for Tuesday, November 8, 2016, the Uptown Greenwood Development Corporation (UGDC) Board of Directors has unanimously approved a resolution supporting a yes vote to implement the additional penny sales tax.

Students at Piedmont Technical College were treated to a Fall Kick-off and Club Fair recently.  Associate in Arts student Tavaious Cunningham of Greenwood, right, gets information on registering to vote from Lisa Toland, dean of off campus instruction and department head for social sciences. The annual event welcomes students back to class and introduces them to the clubs and organizations available on campus.

Congressman Jeff Duncan Receives 50th Co-Sponsor on GITMO Lawsuit Resolution to keep terrorist detainees out of South Carolina/U.S.

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Duncan issued a statement to call attention to the 50th cosponsor, Rep. Michael Burgess to his bill H. Res. 617. The resolution would empower Congress to immediately bring suit against the Obama Administration should the President choose to violate the law and move Guantanamo Bay terrorists to the U.S. mainland.

Abbeville man arrested for beating woman with pistol

On Sept 11, 2016 police responded to Self Regional Healthcare where a woman had arrived bleeding from the head and reporting she had been beaten by her live-in boyfriend.

According to police reports, Nathaniel Deshawn Hurley, 23 of Cambridge Street, Abbeville was arrested for hitting his girlfriend in the head with a pistol.

Greenwood man arrested, attacked man with bat

Greenwood Police responded to Self Regional Hospital on Sept 9, 2016 around 10:20 pm after a man arrived with severe injuries from an attack.  According to police reports, the victim was attacked as he was walking on Taggart Ave in Greenwood earlier.

Lander University to host College Night on Oct. 4

Area high school students and their parents are invited to attend College Night on Tuesday, Oct. 4, from 6-7:30 p.m. in Finis Horne Arena on the campus of Lander University.

Prospective college students will have the opportunity to interact with recruiters from more than 40 colleges and universities across the state.  Representatives will be on hand to answer questions about the application process, admissions requirements, programs of study, tuition fees, campus housing and more. Financial aid counselors will be available to offer advice on how and when to apply for assistance to help cover the cost of college expenses.
