Lander University has announced the appointment of Amy Kaplan as the next coach of the university’s equestrian team. A native of Pickens, Kaplan has been riding horses since the age of 10, bringing a wealth of equine experience as she prepares to lead the Lander team.

Area College Students Head Back to Class

Students at Piedmont Technical College recently headed back to class. Radiologic technology student Ashley Calwise of Cross Hill, center, and mechatronics technology student Marcus Bates of Ware Shoals receive help with their parking stickers and college IDs from information resource lab coordinator Bonnie Graham, left. Interested students still have time to enroll for Late Term, which begins Sept. 26.

Eaton support boost D50 projects

During the spring of 2017, Greenwood School District 50 was once again given the opportunity to apply for the Eaton Charitable Contribution Grant. Eaton and District 50 began a collaborative partnership in 2009. Since that time, District 50 has received approximately $140,000 in grants to support STEM initiatives.

Man abuses woman with pistol

A Greenwood man was arrested after woman claims he threatens to kill her and abuses her with a pistol.

According to the police report, the victim says after arriving home from a club, her boyfriend pulled two guns on her.  Said he then began racking the slides and playing with the triggers.

Man arrested claims pregnant wife not in proper state of mind

On August 19, 2017 Deputies with the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on Country Village Court to find a pregnant woman saying her boyfriend were arguing and he refused to allow her to leave.

MADD South Carolina Encourages Everyone to Eclipse Drunk Driving on August 21st and Beyond

On Monday, August 21, when South Carolina and other states will witness an amazing and rare total solar eclipse, Mothers Against Drunk Driving® (MADD) South Carolina wants to remind everyone to designate a non-drinking driver if their plans to enjoy the occasion include alcohol. Burglary, chase ends with one Greenwood man arrested

Greenwood Police arrested one person after a short chase early Friday morning. Officers responded to a call from a citizen stating that a black male suspect had broken the window at Los Dos Amigos on the corner of Chipley Avenue and New Market Street at approximately 5:37am.

At Piedmont Technical College’s recent summer commencement exercises, outstanding students from each of the college’s seven supporting counties were honored for academic achievement.

Greenwood's Delta Sigma Theta Sorority issues scholarships & awards

During the recent 2016-2017 Chapter Scholarships and Awards Program, the Greenwood Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. awarded scholarships to three area students and awards to two chapter members. The chapter awarded three $1000.00 Scholarships to area high school graduates for 2017 in our service area of Greenwood, McCormick and Abbeville Counties of South Carolina.  Guest speaker for the occasion was Rev. Krystal Bryant who is Pastor of St. Paul Methodist Church in Hodges South Carolina.

Sheriff seeks help locating inmate who escaped

The Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office is currently searching for an escaped inmate.  Nathaniel Tyler Wideman, 22 was seen by a county employee on the roof of the jail.  Wideman then jumped off the roof and fled according to Sheriff Dennis Kelly.

Three face charges related to overdose, one for involuntary manslaughter

On Aug 10, 2017 the Ninety Six Police responded to a home in Ninety Six references a possible overdose.  Upon arriving they found an unresponsive male.  When EMS arrived, the male was pronounced dead and contacted the coroner.

Police need help identifying suspects in break-in at Hickory Hill

On Aug 13, several suspects broke into Hickory Hill milk farm in Edgefield SC.  The incident occurred around 11:44 p.m.  A total of three males were involved in the break-in according to Edgefield Sheriff’s Office.

Freshman Move-In Day welcomes hundreds to Lander University

A steady stream of incoming college students moved through the doorways of Lander University's residence halls on Monday morning (Aug. 14).  More than 200 volunteers, equipped with hand trucks and muscle power, helped students, and their families unload vehicles __ hauling mini-refrigerators, lamps, mirrors, clothing and other essentials to the students' rooms.

Man arrested for breaking into vehicle

A man was arrested after a witness called police and told them she is watching him ramble through her car. 

Quintavious Devonta Johnson, 18 of 8 First Street, Greenwood was arrested and charged with breaking into motor vehicle.

Traffic stop ends in multiple charges

On Sunday, Aug 13 around midnight, an officer with the SCHP initiated a traffic stop for speeding.  As the officer was talking with the driver, the manager of the South Main Bar & Grill approached the officer telling him that this man must left without paying his bar tab.

Jerry Craig Brooks III, 27 of 204 Nation Road, Hodges SC was arrested and charged with defrauding an innkeeper, resisting arrest, damage to city property, DUI, DUS, open container, false name to police.

Fatal accident on Northside Drive

One person was fatally injured Friday around 5pm in a one vehicle accident on Northside Drive in Greenwood SC.  According to the SCHP the driver of a 2013 Nissan SUV ran off the side of the road and struck a utility pole.

Dorothy B. Hellams, 83 of 114 Mayapple Street, Greenwood SC was fatally injured.  Hellams was transported to the hospital where she later died.

Two other passengers were injured and transported to Self Regional Healthcare for treatment.
