Upstate SC to count homeless neighbors

Beginning on January 25 and continuing through January 31, the Upstate Continuum of Care – a local consortium of housing agencies, service providers, and governmental units committed to ending homelessness in the Upstate of South Carolina – will conduct a census of individuals and families who are experiencing homelessness. Known as the Point-in-Time (PIT) Count, this annual census is an important tool for understanding the present needs of our local homeless population and providing direction for the development of future services.

Piedmont Tech Awarded Grant for New Job Readiness Program

Piedmont Technical College has received the State Workforce Development Board’s (SWDB) Apprenticeships for Priority Populations Grant which will help cover tuition costs for the first two steps of the college’s new “Ready to Work” program. SWDB awarded the college $100,000 to implement apprenticeship opportunities for individuals with barriers to employment.

Planning a spring wedding? Or just looking for an exciting ladies’ night out? Piedmont Technical College has an event for you.

PTC will host the Foothills Bridal Fair and Women’s Expo Thursday, Jan. 26.

The event, sponsored by Piedmont Technical College’s Continuing Education division, offers everything for the bride-to-be from DJs, photographers and wedding planners to wedding venues, caterers and bridal gowns. For those not planning a wedding, the event will feature women’s clothing, skincare, health and wellness, jewelry, hair salons, travel and much more.

Self Regional Healthcare Home Health Services Expanding to Newberry County

Self Regional Healthcare is extending its Home Health services into Newberry County. Self Regional applied for and was awarded a Certificate of Need by the state of South Carolina due to a desire and need for its home care services in this particular county. Referrals will be accepted starting Monday, January 23.

Volunteers needed to help Bird Dog Sally

Bird Dog Sally, aka Chad Culbertson has his eyes set on a huge event this coming Memorial Day weekend in Greenwood SC;  A huge festival with rides, games, car – truck – motorcycle – tractor show, bands, vendors, food and much more is in the planning stage now.  Culbertson wants to have a festival where family and kids can come have some good ole fashion fun.  This is all to help benefit the Shriners Hospital and our Veterans.

Police: man arrested for pointing firearm at people after vehicle accident

A Greenwood man was arrested after several witnesses claimed he pointed a gun at them after being involved in an automobile accident on Hwy 246 South.

Kenneth Lee Riddle, 29 of Stoney Point Road in Greenwood was arrested and charged with pointing and presenting a firearm by the Greenwood County Sheriff Office.

Local drug treatment agency seeks community feeback

Cornerstone is seeking input from area residents regarding community issues surrounding alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, other drugs and related topics.

The agency – which provides drug prevention and treatment services in Greenwood, Edgefield, McCormick, and Abbeville counties – is in the process of developing a strategic plan to guide what services the community wants and needs.

Lander Student Earns Scholarship for Commitment to Promoting Literacy

Lander University junior and Greenwood resident Maria Morales-Moreno has been selected as the 2017 recipient of the Florence Nelson Undergraduate Scholarship.

The scholarship is awarded annually by the South Carolina International Reading Association (SCIRA) to an in-state student majoring in education, and is named for the organization’s first president. Maria was selected for her commitment to encourage reading as a lifetime tool for learning and for inspiring others to make reading a habit.

Man arrested for assault and kidnapping

A Greenwood man was arrested on Monday, Jan 16, 2017 after victim reported to police that she was assaulted and held against her will.

According to the police report, 54-year-old David Wayne Lefevre of Florida Ave, Greenwood SC was arrested and charged with 2nd degree domestic violence and kidnapping.

Young People Set to Lift the Spirits of Local Seniors One Valentine's Day Card at a Time and Meals on Wheels America join forces for fourth annual Love Letters campaign.

More than 15.5 million seniors in America live alone and face isolation due to declining mobility and geographic location. To help combat the negative effects of isolation,, the largest organization for young people and social change, has teamed up with Meals on Wheels America, the oldest and largest national organization supporting community-based senior nutrition programs, for the fourth annual Love Letters campaign.

Greenwood, S.C., continues to increase its role and competitiveness as an international provider of genetic services with the commitment of more than $5.4 million from the Greenwood Genetic Center (GGC) to expand and enhance molecular and metabolomic testing. This investment will bring new technologies and equipment, an expanded diagnostic test menu and enhanced efficiencies to the Center's Harold A. Taylor Diagnostic Laboratories in Greenwood.

Continuing Education Staff Members Receive Recognition

Two members of Piedmont Technical College’s Economic Development and Continuing Education division have been recognized for their outstanding work by the South Carolina Association for Higher Continuing Education (SCAHCE).

Dave Wittig, instructor, was named Outstanding Continuing Education Instructor and Lisa Bartanus, corporate training director, received the John J. Duffy Scholarship Award.

“It’s nice to be recognized for all the hard work and wanting to do a good job,” said Wittig.

Greenwood City Police arrest a man in connection with the parking lot shooting that occurred on Dec 17, 2016 at the South Main Bar and Grill. 

Demarcus Kenywell Barr, 27 was arrested and charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

Man arrested after chasing people with machete

On Sunday around 2 a.m. Greenwood City Police responded to Hackett Ave after receiving calls about a man chasing people with a hatchet.

According to the report, police arrived at the scene and saw several individuals running up the road and pointing back toward a corner store building.  One of them yelled, “he hit my sister with an axe.
