Greenwood man arrested on gun charge after altercation

An altercation involving three men at a local gas station leads to one being arrested and charged with pointing a handgun.

Antarvious Cortez Brooks, 21 of 100 Perry Drive, Greenwood was arrested and charged with pointing a firearm at a person, 1st degree assault and battery and disorderly conduct.

Self Regional Healthcare Physician Performs First Surgery of its Kind in South Carolina

On April 11, 2016, Dr. Greg McLoughlin, a surgeon at the South Carolina Spine Center, performed a minimally invasive spinal fusion operation with new technology, the VariLift-L® Expandable Interbody Fusion Device. It was the first surgery of its kind in the state of South Carolina.

Hughey Re-Sentenced to Life Imprisonment
Tuesday afternoon, the Honorable Donald B. Hocker sentenced John Kennedy Hughey to life imprisonment for the December 4, 1995 murders of Tasheka Jackson and Luvenia Harris. 

Hughey originally received two death sentences following his October 1997 jury trial. On May 7, 2009, however, a Circuit Court Judge ordered Hughey receive a new sentencing hearing because the jurors in his case were instructed they could not consider mercy as a reason to impose life sentences. Appeals of this order by the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office were not successful.

Remembering Terry Marshall, M.D.

The medical and Lakelands communities mourn the loss of Terry Marshall, M.D. Dr. Marshall was a neonatologist and director of neonatology at Self Regional Healthcare.

Our organization has lost a great physician and man who devoted his life to taking care of our tiniest patients. In his 32 years here at Self Regional, he cared for more than 7,000 babies who were in the neonatal intensive care unit and thousands more healthy babies.

Greenwood Man Acquitted of Homicide by Child Abuse

A jury deliberated for just under three hours Thursday, July 14, 2016 before acquitting Brandon Lamar Homes of Homicide by Child Abuse of three year old Ja Lierion Patterson.  Holmes spent fifteen months in the Greenwood County Detention Center without bond.  According to his attorney, Charles Grose, Holmes spent a quiet weekend with his family.

Two arrested on meth charges

On Friday, July 15, 2016 Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office received a complaint that someone was possibly manufacturing drugs at a residence located at 130 Pine Ridge Drive.  Upon arrival deputies discussed the matter with resident Shannon Marie Whitt, 38 who gave consent for deputies to search the home.

Self Regional supports Project HOPE

Self Regional Healthcare donated $100,000 to Project HOPE Foundation, an organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and their families. The funds will go towards opening an innovative center of services for children with autism in Greenwood fall of 2016.

Elizabeth Davis, 89, had her Wish of a Lifetime fulfilled when she traveled to Hilton Head Island to attend the RBC Heritage Golf Tournament on April 16 and 17. There she had the opportunity to witness some of the best golfers in the world, and renew her passion for the sport.

Lucky's Cornhole Classic yields major competition

Competitors from around the country gathered at Lucky’s for a major cornhole tournament held on Saturday, July 16, 2016.  This tournament boasted some of the best players from all around, even six time World Champion Matt Guy from Kentucky.

By the end it was the team of Scott Lane (FL) and Rob Guthery (Charleston) that took the Grand Champion status knocking off the father/son duo of Matt & Bret Guy.

Sells receives Norbord South Carolina, Inc. PTC Golf Classic Scholarship

Piedmont Technical College student and Greenwood resident Frank Sells, III, right, was recently awarded the Norbord South Carolina, Inc. PTC Golf Classic Scholarship at the college’s annual luncheon. Sells, an industrial electronics technology student, is congratulated by Chad Teague, scholarship committee member. The scholarship is funded through an annual golf tournament held each spring and selection is based on academic achievement and financial need.

Lander names Adam Weyer Assistant AD for Sports Medicine

Adam Weyer has been named Lander University's Assistant AD for Sports Medicine it was announced today by Athletic Director Jeff May.

Weyer, who joins Lander after working a combined 10 years as head athletic trainer at nearby Erskine College, replaces Kent Atkins, who is now the Bearcats' Assistant AD for NCAA Compliance and Internal Operations. Weyer also served a combined six years as an athletic trainer in Major League Baseball’s Cincinnati Reds’ and Arizona Diamondbacks’ organizations.

Girl donates hair to support brother

Some kids can surprise you and do some very special acts; like Hailey Quattlebaum who’s almost 11 years old.  She has a brother that has a condition called alopecia, also known as spot baldness.

Hailey felt the need to show her support.  So she visits a local Sports Clip in Greenwood and had 14 inches cut from her hair.  She will be donating her hair to Wigs for Kids.

Nancy and Ed Akers made a donation of $6,000 to support the Humane Society's "Unleash The Possibilities" major gifts campaign.  The monies will help build and fund the Adoption Center, Spay/Neuter Clinic, and Community Education Room in the new animal care center being constructed in collaboration with Greenwood County.

Festival of Discovery off to a great start

It was a very hot kickoff to this year’s Festival of Discovery in Greenwood SC.  Competitors convened in Uptown Greenwood from all throughout the US.  With temperatures reaching upwards to the 100 degree mark, it’s sure to create a unique challenge for the competitors.  But the temperature did not stop the thousands from coming out for awesome food, great entertainment and the best part, it continues on through today with entertainment winding down on Sunday.
