Ninety Six man arrested for stealing

A man from Ninety Six was arrested for stealing after the victim gave video showing the incident to the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office.

Shannon Samuel Martin, 42 of 102 Maple Drive, Ninety Six SC was arrested and charged with grand larceny.

Teen arrested, charged with assault by mob

A Greenwood teen was arrested from a fight that occurred back on February 23, 2017 at the Windtree Apartments.

The victim filed a report with the police after finding out that he had a broken nose and jaw requiring surgery.

Greenwood to Celebrate National Pollinator Week
Greenwood, Bee City USA’s newest affiliate, will be celebrating National Pollinator Week with a special event on Thursday, June 29 at 6:00 pm at the Velux Panels near the Water Fountain at Court Ave. and Main St. 

Brochures, pollinator seeds donated from Park Seed, and a Pollinator Plant list will be available to attendees.  Participants will also get to tour several of the City of Greenwood’s Pollinator gardens and topiaries.

Tuesday June 20, Greenwood Area Habitat for Humanity honored their volunteers by hosting the annual Appreciation Banquet. This year’s banquet was held at Harris Baptist Church. Among those in attendance were several members of the Greenwood City Council as well as Representatives John McCravy and Anne Parks and Senators Floyd Nicholson and Mike Gambrell.

Lander University Offers 'Cybercamp'

Brayden Peters, a rising fifth-grader at Woodfields Elementary, checks the strength of a password using the “How Secure Is My Password?” website and learns it would take a computer four octodecillion years to crack it. Steganography and encryption were among the other topics covered in Cybercamp, one of the Duke Energy-sponsored science and math programs for young learners offered this summer by Lander University. Working with Brayden is Lander Assistant Professor of Computing Dr. Julie Henderson.

Two women arrested for breaking into a home and fighting

Deputies with the GCSO responded to a fight in progress call at residence on Trotters Eight in Greenwood SC.  According to the police report, witnesses claimed that two women came into the home uninvited and began fighting with those in the residence.

Wiley, a medical assisting student, is congratulated by Courtenay Ramey, donor and presenter. The scholarship is awarded annually to a health science program student and is based on financial need and academic achievement.

Piedmont Technical College student and Greenwood resident Wilson Weaghington was recently awarded the Judy Daulton Accounting Scholarship at the college’s annual scholarship luncheon. Weaghington, left, an accounting student, is congratulated by Judy Daulton. This endowment was established in 2014 by Judy Daulton, a retired accounting instructor at Piedmont Technical. Scholarships are awarded to students enrolled in the Accounting curriculum.

Established by the Piedmont Technical College Alumni Association, this scholarship is based on academic achievement and need.

Two Piedmont Technical College students received the Greenwood Rotary Club Scholarship at a recent scholarship luncheon. Not pictured is Keenan Tallent, II, a heating, ventilation and air conditioning student from Greenwood. The scholarship is awarded annually to a second-year industrial technology student and a second-year engineering technology student and is based on academic achievement and financial need.

Piedmont Technical College student and Greenwood resident Christine Evans, center, recently received the Casandra Cae Laster Memorial Scholarship at the college’s annual scholarship luncheon. Evans, a commercial art student, is congratulated by Kendall Adams, commercial art program director and Laster family members Donna Laster and Jesse Stevens. The scholarship was established in Laster’s memory for students enrolled in the commercial arts program and is based on academic achievement.

Self Regional Healthcare Participating in National Safe + Sound Week

According to a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in five nonfatal occupational injuries reported in 2013 occurred among healthcare workers – in fact, the injury rate among healthcare and social assistance workers is higher than any other sector. At Self Regional Healthcare the safety of our team members and providing a safe work environment are of top priority, which is why we are participating in Safe + Sound Week, June 12 – 18, 2017.

Michael V. Horton named S.C. Civil Engineer of the Year

Davis & Floyd Inc. is pleased to announce that Michael V. Horton has been named 2017 Engineer of the Year by the South Carolina Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

Each year, this award is presented to the engineer that has demonstrated the most outstanding contribution to the profession in South Carolina. Horton was presented the award last week during the ASCE annual meeting of its South Carolina Section in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Great turnout for Bee Buzzin' Bike Tour

The SC Festival of Flowers held its Bee Buzzin’ Bike Tour on Saturday, June 10th. Approximately 120 riders participated and rode throughout Greenwood County on one of three routes – 20 miles, 30 miles or 55 miles.
