Greenwood Genetic Center collaboration receives funding to search for causes and treatments of debilitating neurological disorders

Researchers at the Greenwood Genetic Center (GGC), in partnership with the University of Georgia (UGA) and the Clinic for Special Children in Strasburg, PA, have received a $1.8 million grant from the W. M. Keck Foundation to discover the fundamental cellular changes that cause debilitating neurological disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease, autism, and intellectual disabilities.

Self Regional Seeks Summer Volunteers

Self Regional Healthcare’s Volunteer Services department is now accepting applications for student volunteers for the summer.

Student volunteers are an important part of the health system’s volunteer program, and offer young adults a first-hand experience into the day-to-day operations of a healthcare environment. Self Regional has a maximum of 35 slots for high school volunteers, so students are encouraged to begin and submit their applications prior to the April 17 deadline.

Cat Barn Celebrates Milestones
It was just two years ago when the Humane Society of McCormick County Cat Barn opened its door.  The HSMC "cat team" offers adoptions in South Carolina with partners Petco in Greenwood and Petsmart in Aiken. In addition cats may be adopted by special appointment at the HSMC Cat Barn in McCormick. This past February 7th marked a special day for HSMC's cat team: a lucky cat named “Henry” was the 100th cat to be adopted out. The cat team has taken care of over 111 cats at the barn and in their foster care program, including the birth of 3 kittens at the barn on April 1, 2014.
