Council Considering implementing hospitality tax

Hospitality tax funding has helped the City of Greenwood give a nearly complete makeover to the Uptown area over the course of the last decade. Similarly, the towns of Ninety Six and Ware Shoals utilize hospitality tax funding for tourism related projects. Greenwood County will now be exploring implementing a hospitality tax to assist with tourism related projects.

No School For Springfield Students on Wednesday

Due to a power outage on Tuesday morning, there will be no school for students at Springfield Elementary on Wednesday, August 20th.

This morning at Springfield, there was a power outage at the school’s main electrical panel. All power was lost at the school and all students and staff were transported by District 50 buses to the Emerald High School gymnasium.

Local Artist Creating A "Moonshine" Buzz

Sometimes in life you just get a shock and that’s what just happened to local singer/songwriter Prevo Rodgers from Saluda, SC. This past Monday morning Prevo was awaken to the news that a song he just released was not just playing on the radio in Nashville but to his surprise, he was contacted by THE ICEMAN himself, Bobby Golomboski.  Prevo was made aware that the song, Moonshine, was now on The Iceman’s Cavern song rotation out of Nashville and going to be eligible for the top 40 live countdown. Springfield Elementary loses power, students & staff transported

All Springfield students and staff are safe. This morning at Springfield Elementary School, there was a power outage at the main power box. All power was lost at the school and the entire student body and staff were transported by District 50 buses to EHS gymnasium

Streetscape grant match gets approval

Greenwood City Council unanimously passed a resolution Monday during their regular meeting that would commit about half a million dollars to a proposed streetscape project along Riley, Magnolia, Phoenix and Main Streets.

Bikers Hit the Road for Special Olympics

On April 12th bikers helped raise $7,000.00 to help Special Olympics Athletes. The Blue Knights Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club hosted the event which started at BiLo and ended at Carolina Tavern. This event had over 90 riders from the surrounding area.

Solicitor makes deliveries to School Districts as part of Annual School Supply Drive

This past week Eighth Circuit Solicitor David M. Stumbo, along with staff members Jami Steifle and Dale Allen, hand-delivered school supplies to the local school districts of the Eighth Judicial Circuit: Abbeville District 60; Greenwood Districts 50, 51 (Ware Shoals), and 52 (Ninety Six); Laurens Districts 55 and 56 (Clinton); Newberry District 1; and Calhoun Falls Charter School.  The Laurens County Safe Home also received supplies to assist families that are served by the organization.

United Way of Greenwood and Abbeville Counties is hosting a free showing of the short documentary When the Bough Breaks.  The film addresses child literacy in South Carolina and its far-reaching impact when kids become teens and adults.  One of United Way’s three major impact areas is education.  Their goal is to reach a graduation rate of 87 percent by 2018.

The Greenwood Genetic Center welcomes Melanie Jones, PhD, as Assistant Director of the Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory.  Dr. Jones earned a doctorate in Human and Molecular Genetics at Virginia Commonwealth University in 2010 and completed fellowships in both Clinical Molecular Genetics and Clinical Cytogenetics at Emory Genetics Laboratory.
