Lander enjoys solid first round at Cutter Creek Invitational

The Lander women's golf team had four players notch top-10 scores in the first round of the Cutter Creek Invitational on Monday.

As a team, the Bearcats shot 317 (+29) and are in third place after one round at the Cutter Creek Golf Club.

Hannah Stephenson led the Bearcats with a four-over 76 to tie for fourth on the leaderboard. Caroline Hardee shot a six-over 78 to tie for sixth, while Madison Jordan carded an eight-over 80, good for ninth. Nichole Trombetta shot an 11-over 83, good for 14th. Marley Barefoot fired a 12-over 84 and is tied for 15th entering the final round.

Marshall named Lander men's lacrosse assistant coach

Lander head men's lacrosse coach Anthony LePore recently announced the hiring of Adam Marshall as an assistant coach. 

Marshall joins the Lander staff after a successful three-year stint at Belmont Abbey. Marshall served as the Crusaders' offensive coordinator and coached faceoffs and transition. 

Under Marshall's direction, Belmont Abbey averaged 15.1 goals per game in 2019 and earned the program's first NCAA Touranment berth. The Crusaders also captured a conference championship in 2018.

Trung Duong named Lander wrestling assistant coach

Lander head wrestling coach RC LaHaye announced the addition of Trung Duong as a full-time assistant to the wrestling staff on Tuesday.

Duong, a 2017 graduate of Newberry College, was a two-time All-American for the Wolves during LaHaye's tenure there, finishing in the top-eight of the national tournament in 2016 and 2017. Duong then served as a graduate assistant coach for Ohio Valley during the 2017-18 season.

No. 5 Lander men's soccer projected to finish second in Peach Belt Conference

The No. 5-ranked Lander men's soccer team was picked second in the Peach Belt Conference preseason poll in a vote by the league's eight head coaches on Tuesday.

The Bearcats, who received one first-place vote, have captured a share of nine PBC regular-season titles and five PBC Tournament championships. Lander has reached the PBC Tournament championship match in each of the last four seasons. The Bearcats have made 13 appearances in the NCAA Tournament, including four consecutive bids.

Lander men's cross country picked seventh in PBC preseason poll

The 2019 cross country preseason polls have been released by the Peach Belt Conference officials and the Lander Bearcat are picked to finish tied for seventh on the men's side.

Augusta was picked to win the conference receiving seven votes. UNC Pembroke followed behind them and Flagler came in third.

Lander's Chretien earns Peach Belt Conference preseason honors

Thibault Chretien, a junior midfielder on the Lander men's soccer team, was selected to the Peach Belt Conference's preseason all-conference team as voted on by the league's eight head coaches.

Chretien is a two-time United Soccer Coaches first-team All-Southeast Region selection, a two-time second-team All-PBC honoree, and a two-time second-team D2CCA All-Southeast Region performer as a sophomore in 2018, scoring two goals and recording five assists. The Laval, France, native has racked up 21 points in his first two seasons at Lander and was honored as the league's co-Freshman of the Year in 2017. 

Lander begins its season on Sept. 6 as the Bearcats travel to Alabama Huntsville.

Veach hired as Assistant Coach on Lander Volleyball Staff

Former Ole Miss standout Ashley Veach has been named assistant coach for the Lander volleyball program, head coach Ashley White announced on Monday.

"I am excited for the opportunity to work with this amazing Lander family," said Veach. "I am coming into an already successful volleyball program and I am looking forward to being a part of that. I hope to be able to add to the growth and success of each individual player."

Veach joins the Bearcats after spending the last five years coaching at the collegiate and club levels following a four-year career with the Ole Miss volleyball program, where she was part of 52 victories with the Rebels.

Lander Women's Soccer Hires Former Player as Assistant Coach

The Lander women's soccer program has hired former midfielder Noel McDaniel as an assistant coach, head coach Chris Ayer announced on Monday.

"I count it a great privilege to have the opportunity to return to and serve a community, school, and program that I have benefited so much from," said McDaniel. "I am excited about where the Bearcat women's soccer program is headed and am extremely grateful to be a part of it."

Lander Women's Tennis Releases 2019-2020 Schedule

With five returning members from the 2018-19 team, the Lander women's tennis team looks to return to postseason play in 2019-20. The team finished eighth in the Peach Belt Conference last year and secured a berth in the conference tournament before falling to top-seeded Columbus State. The Bearcats will participate in four tournaments throughout the fall season.

The Fall

The Bearcats will open fall play (Sept. 7-8) with a trip to Wingate, N.C. to compete in the Wingate Invitational. Following a three-week break, the team will head to the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, S.C. (Sept. 26-29) to compete in the Southeast ITA Regional Tournament. After another three-week break, the Bearcats will return home and host the Blue and Gold Invitational (Oct. 19-20). Lander will wrap up the fall season at home as they will host the Bearcat Invitational (Oct. 26-27).

The Spring

The Bearcats will face five teams that were ranked in the final Oracle/ITA top-25 last year and two top-10 ranked teams.

Squires Adds Dale Parker as Lander Assistant Coach

Lander men's soccer head coach Lee Squires announced the hiring of former Lees-McRae teammate Dale Parker as an assistant coach on Friday.

Squires and Parker were teammates at Lees-McRae from 2007-09, helping lead the Bobcats to an appearance in the 2009 national championship match. 

"I am delighted to be able to bring Dale in," said Squires. "Having played and lived together back in our own college days, I know first hand the qualities Dale can bring to our program. He's an experienced coach who carries himself very well and I know our guys will enjoy having him around and learning from him."

Parker most recently served as the Director of Coaching for the Virginia Soccer Assocation and as the head coach of the U16/17 boys team of the Virginia Develpment Academy. Prior to that, Parker served as the Director of Girls Coaching for Chesterfield United FC and as head coach for the club's women's pre-WPSL team.

Lander women's soccer releases fall schedule

Lander women's soccer head coach Chris Ayer has finalized the 2019 fall schedule. The Bearcats' regular season will consist of 16 matches.

Three home contests open the campaign as the Bearcats host Converse on Sept. 5 in the season's first match. Coker visits Van Taylor Stadium on Sept. 11, followed by a date with Wingate on Sept. 14. 

Lander then embarks on a four-match road swing, visiting Limestone, a participant in last year's NCAA Tournament, on Sept. 18 and Anderson on Sept. 25. Peach Belt Conference play begins with a Sept. 28 trip to Georgia College and plays its first PBC road match at Francis Marion on Oct. 2.

Lander men's basketball adds Dory Hines as assistant coach

Dorionte' "Dory" Hines has been named an assistant coach for the Lander men's basketball program, head coach Drew Richards announced Wednesday.

Hines spent the previous five seasons at Arendell Parrott Academy, the last two as head coach. The Patriots earned a berth in the NCISSA Tournament for the first time since 2011 and notch their first NCISSA Tournament win in nearly 20 years under Hines. 

"Dory will be a fantastic addition to our staff and a great mentor for our players," said Richards. "His background as a tough nosed Division II player and a head high school coach is a perfect fit for our program. He has an extremely bright future in college coaching and I feel lucky he choose to begin his career with us."

Area youngsters learn baseball fundamentals at Lander University

Lander University hosted 28 participants during the first session of its baseball camp, held June 17-20. Open to youngsters between ages 6-12, the camp focused on the fundamentals of the game, and the importance of working hard and being a good teammate. Held at Dolny Stadium, known for being one of the finest baseball facilities in the Southeast, the camp was led by Lander head baseball coach Jason Burke, pitching coach Connor Kelly, hitting coach Ricky Santiago, and current Bearcat players Davis Agle, of Duncan, and Zeke Stephens, of Greer.
