Bolton visits Lander for 50th reunion

Lander University alumnus Steve Bolton, ’69, recently returned for the 2019 Homecoming Week to honor his class’s 50th reunion, and to meet the current Bearcat tennis team.

Bolton, who now lives in Florida, is a member of Lander’s original tennis team from 1968-69. Because of his financial gifts to Lander over a period years, one of the tennis courts in the Jeff May Sports Complex is named in his honor.

Lander men's basketball scores 50 points in second half, upsets No. 18 UNC Pembroke

The Lander men's basketball team outscored No. 18-ranked UNC Pembroke 50-34 in the second half and upset the Braves 88-80 in Peach Belt Conference action Wednesday night at Horne Arena.

The Bearcats snapped a seven-game losing streak to UNC Pembroke, improving to 8-13 overall and 7-8 in the Peach Belt.

Lander has now won six of its last seven games at Horne Arena.

"We believe in each other," said interim head coach Ryan Hilburn. "We've just got to keep fighting. We had a great environment tonight, the fans were great, the energy in this place was awesome and our kids played their tails off."

Lander pulls away from UNCP as Crews scores career-high 16 points

GREENWOOD – The Lander women's basketball team received a career-high 16 points from freshman Sarah Crews and got its usual production from Jessica Harris and Mylea McKenith, beating Peach Belt Conference rival UNC Pembroke 77-55 Wednesday night at Horne Arena.

The first-place Bearcats (16-5, 13-2 PBC) earned their seventh consecutive victory and have won 13 of their last 14 games.

Lander sweeps Emmanuel as Killian throws program's first perfect game

The Lander softball team got an historic night of pitching as Abby Killiantossed the first perfect game in school history and Ashley Vinson came three outs away from a no-hitter as the Bearcats swept Emmanuel, 4-1 and 7-0, at Doug Spears Field on Tuesday night. 

Lander (5-2) out-hit Emmanuel (0-2) 17-2 on the day and remained unbeaten all-time against the Lions.

"Great wins for us today," said head coach Glen Crawford. "Our pitching was unbelievable and our bats came alive. We had to adjust to their pitching and once we did that, we started to hit the ball well."

Lander picked fifth in Peach Belt Conference preseason poll

The Lander softball team was selected to finish fifth in the Peach Belt Conference when the 2019 preseason coaches poll was released Thursday afternoon.

The Bearcats, who finished fifth in the league last season, its highest conference finish since 1998, bring back first-team all-PBC second baseman Sydney Grimesalong with Kelli McCormack and Chandler Carey, the team's top two RBI producers in 2018.

Roberts steps down as Lander men's basketball coach; Hilburn named interim coach

GREENWOOD – Lander athletics director Brian Reese has announced that Steve Roberts has resigned as the head men's basketball coach and that assistant coach Ryan Hilburn will take over the program as the interim head coach effective immediately.

Roberts, who played in 125 games for Lander from 1980-84 and worked for all four previous head coaches at Lander before taking over the program in April of 2015, guided the Bearcats to a Peach Belt Conference Tournament title in 2015-16 and the school's first NCAA Tournament appearance in nine years.

EHS wrestling finished 8th in Dreher Invitational
The wrestling team wrestled in the Dreher Invitational this weekend and placed 8th out of 34 teams. The team had 4 wrestlers place at the tournament. Koby Moore and Noah Moore placed 1st and Drew Adams and Cameron Gordan placed 4th.

Two area golfers named CAWS 2018 Players of the Year

Anna Grace Brock (Emerald High School 3A) and Johnna Magaha (Ware Shoals High School 1A) were named 2018 Players of the Year for SCAWS (South Carolina Association of Women’s Sports), both for Golf.

Others in the golf category were Isabella Rawl (Lexington 5A), Emma Charles (Hartsville 4A) and Jensen Castle (Gray Collegiate 2A).

All players will be honored at an awards banquet held at Columbia Museum in Columbia, SC on February 24, 2019 at 1 p.m.

Lander anglers finish autumn season in style

Lander University isn’t widely known for spawning top-notch fishermen, but that is rapidly changing.

This fall, the Lander Bass Fishing team climbed a few more notches by placing three winning teams in six tournaments of the Clemson Fall Trail.

Freshmen Brenden Farley and Weston Bison set the pace, placing 2nd, 5th, and 3rd twice –  despite being able to fish in only four of the Trail tournaments.

Lander men's soccer places five on United Soccer Coaches All-Southeast Region team

GREENWOOD – Five members of the Lander men's soccer team were named to the United Soccer Coaches All-Southeast Region teams on Monday. Three players were named to the first team, with one player landing on the second team and one on the third team. The Bearcats were the only team in the region to have five players honored.
