Lander women's soccer announces date for Summer Elite ID Camp

The Lander women's soccer program will host its Summer Elite ID Camp at the Jeff May Complex on August 3, head coach Chris Ayer announced.

The camp, which will run from 9:300 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., is designed to give each camper an inside look into what it means to be a collegiate soccer player. Campers will participate in two training sessions that will mirror sessions that the Lander soccer staff runs for its current team. Each session will test the campers physically as well as expand their tactical knowledge. The sessions will be run by the Lander staff and will be assisted by the current Bearcat women's soccer players. Training sessions will conclude with match play. During the lunch break, campers will be able to engage in Q&As regarding what it is like to be a collegiate athlete, the college recruiting process and academics.

Lander announces men's basketball recruiting class

Head coach Drew Richards announced the commitments of six student-athletes to the Lander men's basketball program for the 2019-20 season. The incoming class hails from four different states, highlighted by two Georgia and two South Carolina natives.

"I am excited to welcome these six young men to Lander in the fall," Richards said. "They all excel on the court and in the classroom and will be great representatives of our program and our school. All six have been part of winning programs and will make a great impact on Bearcat basketball. I also want to thank our staff for working so diligently in a difficult situation to help bring in such a strong class."

Area youngsters learn soccer fundamentals at Lander University

Lander University hosted nearly 70 participants for the three-day annual Chris Ayer Soccer School at Van Taylor Stadium. Open to area youngsters between the ages of 4-14, the camp is named for the head coach of Lander’s women’s soccer team. During the camp, Coach Ayer and members of the women’s Bearcat soccer team work with the camp participants on the fundamentals of the game and provide them with an inside look into what it means to be a collegiate soccer player. Bearcat Buddies Summer Camp

Participants of Lander University’s Bearcat Buddies summer camp showcase a selection of cheers and dances they learned during camp for friends and family on Friday, June 6. Held annually, Bearcat Buddies allows kids ages 3-12 the opportunity to perform with the award-winning Lander University cheerleaders and dancers. Lander's Moore and Troutman selected in MLB Draft

The Lander baseball team had two players selected on the final day of the 2019 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Wednesday afternoon.

Senior right-handed pitcher Alex Moore was the first Bearcat selected, taken in the 18th round (552nd overall) by the Chicago Cubs while senior right-hander Ryan Troutman followed as the Pittsburgh Pirates made him their 26th round pick (784th overall).

GHS Eagles hosting Wrestling Clinic

The Greenwood Eagles are hosting a wrestling clinic for those in K-8th grade starting on June 17th through June 20th.

The clinic will be held from 8 am to 12 pm and the cost is $15 per day per child.  $10 per day for 2 or more children per child.

Registration is open to all Greenwood County Youth between the ages of 5 and 12.

Lander baseball places 12 player on PBC All-Academic team

The Lander baseball team landed 12 players on the Peach Belt Conference's All-Academic team, the PBC office announced today.

Vincent Addona, Bailey Connell, Fraser Ellard, Mike Fitschen, Ryan Flores, Robbie Hoyt, Carson Jones, Alex Moore, Carson Schlegel, Marshall Thompson, Joseph Whitt, and Colton Yeager earned all-academic honors for the Bearcats. Lander's 12 selections led the conference and accounted for nearly one-fourth of the 52-player list.

To be eligible for the All-Academic team, a student-athlete must 1) participate in at least half of his/her team's events and be either a starter or significant contributor; 2) achieved a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and 3) completed at least one full academic year at his or her current institution and has reached sophomore athletic eligibility. The Peach Belt Conference Sports Information Directors oversee the program.

Lander set for 14th straight NCAA Tournament appearance

The No. 8-ranked Lander men's tennis team earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament on Tuesday, the 14th consecutive appearance for the Bearcats. Lander is the No. 5 seed in Southeast Regional I, which will be held in Columbus, Ga.

Lander (17-5) will play No. 4-ranked and fourth-seeded Flagler (16-7) in the first round on Saturday at 12:00 p.m., with the host, No. 1-ranked and top-seeded Columbus State (23-2), facing eighth-seeded Limestone (13-7) in the first match of the day at 9:00 a.m. The two winners will face each other Sunday at 1:00 p.m. for the right to advance to Altamonte Springs, Fla., for the championships on May 21-24.

Four earn all-Peach Belt Conference honors for Lander softball

GREENWOOD – Lander softball tied a program record with four all-Peach Belt Conference honors, including three first-team selections, the league announced on Thursday night. 

Second baseman Sydney Grimes, outfielder Kelli McCormack, and designated player Brianna Surrento earned first-team all-PBC accolades while pitcher Abby Killian earned second-team honors.

Lander caps season with a pair of shutouts over USC Aiken

AIKEN, S.C. – The Lander softball team ended its season with a dominant sweep of in-state rival USC Aiken on Sunday afternoon, beating the Pacers 10-0 and 8-0 in a pair of five-inning games. 

Lander (21-25, 6-14 PBC) surpassed the 20-win mark for the fourth consecutive season, the first time since 2003-06, while the senior class became the first since 2006 to notch 100 wins.

Lander adds 11 to incoming recruiting class

Lander wrestling head coach R.C. LaHaye announced the addition of 11 wrestlers that will join the Bearcats' wrestling program in the fall.

"We are very excited to add these student athletes to our first recruiting class for Lander wrestling," said LaHaye. "Not only are these excellent athletes, but they excel in the classroom as well. This crop will help lay the foundation for Bearcat wrestling and insure we start the program off in the right direction with quality student athletes that will represent Lander on and off the mat. It will be very exciting next fall to watch these student athletes develop and build the culture of Lander Bearcat wrestling."

Game Summary:  The Storm Chasers got out to a ten-run lead in the third inning and held on for a 19-18 victory over the Sandlot Sluggers on Monday.  The Storm Chasers totaled 23 hits in 3 1/2 innings. Holden S, Chance W, Milo D, Rylan J, Sawyer B, Harrison R, Cayden W, Riley P, Trey O, and Wade M all collected multiple hits for the Storm Chasers.

Emerald High School Varsity Baseball beat Carolina High School & Academy 15-0
Cam Lollis had all the right stuff on Tuesday for Emerald Vikings Varsity, allowing zero runs and besting Carolina Academy by a score of 15-0

Emerald Vikings Varsity fired up the offense in the first inning. Sean Adams drove in two when he doubled.  Emerald Vikings Varsity put up six runs in the second inning. Emerald Vikings Varsity's offense in the inning came from singles by Lollis and Caleb McLaughlin, a walk by Braeden Burton, a sacrifice fly by Gage Timmerman, and an error on a ball put in play by Brayden Ridge.

Lander's Bocchino earns Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week honor

Lander senior Peter Bocchino claimed Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week honors as the Bearcats secured their second straight conference Player of the Week award, the league office announced on Monday.

Bocchino, a native of Saugus, Mass., batted .500 (4-for-8) with three home runs, seven RBI and three runs scored. Making his second start of the season, Bocchino gave Lander a 4-0 lead on No. 1-ranked North Greenville on Wednesday night with a second inning grand slam, his first homer of the season and first hit since Feb. 16.

Lander men's basketball to host tryout on April 30

The Lander University men's basketball program will hold an open tryout for graduating high school seniors and Lander student on Tuesday, April 30th at Finis Horne Arena from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Interested players must complete the tryout packet (available here) and bring it to the arena, along with a current physical (summer of 2018 or sooner) and basketball apparel.

Lander men's soccer announces summer camp dates

The Lander men's soccer program will host two summer camp programs at the Jeff May Complex in July, head coach Lee Squires announced on Tuesday.

The Bearcats will partner with the Lakeland Toros for half-day and full-day summer camps on July 8-12. The half-day camps, which will run from 8:30 a.m. to noon are open to any kids ages 4-14, while the full-day camps will go from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from Monday through Thursday, with an 8:30 a.m. to noon session on Friday and are designed for all kids ages 8-14.

Lander's Roury Glanton named Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week

Lander junior outfielder Roury Glanton has been named the Peach Belt Conference's Player of the Week, it was announced on Monday.

Glanton paced the Bearcats by going 8-for-18 (.444) with four runs scored, two doubles, three home runs and 14 runs batted in. The junior homered twice against Georgia Southwestern, breaking a 3-3 tie in the second game on Saturday with a three-run blast in the eighth inning to lead Lander to a 6-4 victory.

Emerald High School Boys Varsity Sporting Clays has tough day

The Emerald Clay Team had 12 shooters complete the SCTP second round qualifier of sporting clays on Saturday. The event was hosted at the NWTF Palmetto Shooting Complex located in Edgefield. Shooters were challenged by a variety of different size and styles of clay targets that simulated both bird and rabbit game in a variety of both, wooded and open field hunting scenarios. Athletes used skill and technique to try and break one hundred targets over fifteen different stations.

Lander women's golf places fifth at Bearcat Invitational

GREENWOOD – The Lander women's golf team held steady on Tuesday to finish fifth at the Bearcat Invitational at the par-72, 5,832-yard course at The Links at Stoney Point.

SCAD claimed the tournament title with a 38-over 614. Limestone finished one stroke back for second place, while Young Harris tallied a 55-over 631 for third place.

Paula Sofia Suarez of SCAD earned medalist honors with a 3-over 147.

Lander in fifth place after opening round at Bearcat Invitational

The Lander women's golf team sits in fifth place after 18 holes at the Bearcat Invitational at the par-72, 5,832-yard course at The Links at Stoney Point. The tournament will conclude with the final round on Tuesday.

Lander shot a 28-over 316 on the first day and is 13 strokes back of tournament leader SCAD. Limestone is in second-place at 313, followed by Lenoir-Rhyne at 314.

Lander beats Augusta to take weekend series

The Lander baseball team scored seven runs in a three-inning stretch and held off a comeback effort from Augusta on Sunday to beat the Jaguars, 8-6, and claim a Peach Belt Conference series victory. 

Lander (14-21, 9-9 PBC) got on the board first, courtesy of Roury Glanton's second inning solo home run, but Augusta (16-18, 5-16 PBC) evened the score when a wild pitch brought home the tying run for the Jaguars in the bottom of the fourth.

Game Summary:  It came down to the last play with the Thunder on the wrong end of a 5-4 defeat to the Biscuits on Thursday. The game was tied at four with the Biscuits batting in the bottom of the sixth when Tycen singled, scoring one run.

Lander wins game two to split with rival Erskine

The Lander softball team used a pair of home runs from Haven Pesce and Chandler Carey to win game two of its rivalry doubleheader at Erskine on Tuesday afternoon, splitting with the Flying Fleet and winning its first game in the series since 2013. The Bearcats dropped game one, 3-0, before taking game two, 7-2. 

Lander (17-15) used a pair of Erskine (18-7) errors in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead in the second game of the day. The Flying Fleet struck back with two runs in the bottom of the third to knot the score at 2-2.
