The Brian O'Reilly Veterans Day Tennis Tournament big success

A beautiful fall day and tennis courts dotted with American flags, surrounded the third annual Brian O'Reilly Memorial Veteran's Day tennis tournament held at Gatewood racket club on Nov 3rd, and 4th. Over 50 players participated in the event representing cities from SC, NC and Georgia. "Gatewood was a great place to have the tournament," said Lori Flick, Tournament Director and founder of the tournament.  "Paul Hamilton, Director of tennis at Gatewood, knew Brian very well and he and Gatewood were very accommodating in hosting the event".

Greenwood 10U Cowboys win the Palmetto 10U District Championship

The Greenwood 10U Cowboys ended the regular season with a 6-2 record. They made it through the playoffs and played Monday night in the Palmetto 10U District Championship. The Cowboys come out with a win to claim the Championship title against the undefeated 10U Greenwood Texans in over time 14-12.

Lander announces "Education Game" against rival Erskine

The Lander women's basketball program and the Lander Diversity Advisory Council are excited to announce a partnership with Greenwood School District 50 to host an "Education Game" on Wednesday, Nov. 28 at 11:00 a.m. in Finis Horne Arena against rival Erskine. The game time has been adjusted to accommodate the over 600 Greenwood School District 50 8th graders that will be on the campus of Lander University. Students will enjoy a tour of the campus and exclusive reserved seating for the basketball game at 11:00 a.m. sponsored by Chick-fil-a of Greenwood. District 50 8th grade students, teachers, and chaperones will receive a complimentary game voucher to be redeemed at any upcoming basketball game day.

Lander remains unbeaten at home with 3-1 win over UNC Pembroke

GREENWOOD – The Lander volleyball team rallied from an early deficit to top UNC Pembroke, 3-1, on Monday night in Finis Horne Arena. The Bearcats defeated the Braves 23-25, 25-19, 25-11, 25-19.

Lander (18-4, 4-2 PBC) remained unbeaten at home on the season, while UNC Pembroke (7-15, 0-6 PBC) dropped its 38th consecutive conference match.

WS Lady Hornets hosting benefit golf tournament

The Ware Shoals Lady Hornets will be hosting a benefit Golf Tournament on Saturday, Nov 17 with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Ware Shoals Golf Course.

The entry fee is $40 per person and includes cart, green fee, lunch, close-ups, prizes, 1 mulligan and 1 red tee.  Prizes for the longest drive and most accurate drive.

3rd Annual Vetern's Day Tennis Tournament to be held Nov 2-4 at the Gatewood Club
USTA Tournament Director, Lori Flick announced the Brian O’Reilly Memorial Veteran’s Day Tennis tournament will take place November 2 thru 3, with Nov 4th in reserve if inclement weather. The USTA (United States Tennis Association) sanctioned tournament was named after Brian O’Reilly, Marine veteran of Korea and former Gatewood Racket club employee, who passed away January 2016. “Brian was well loved by family and everyone at Gatewood.   I am happy that this is my third year hosting this tournament, and that it will be held at Gatewood this year.”

Lander women's soccer posts first PBC shutout with 3-0 win over Young Harris

GREENWOOD – The Lander women's soccer team limited Young Harris to just three shots on goal en route to a 3-0 shutout victory over the Mountain Lions at Van Taylor Stadium on Saturday afternoon. 

The Bearcats (7-1-1, 2-1-1 PBC) earned their second win in conference play and their largest margin of victory since a 3-0 win over Mars Hill on Sept. 1.

Lander Athletics, Knights of Columbus partner to reach Connie Maxwell goal

Lander Athletics, thanks in part to a contribution from the Knights of Columbus council of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Greenwood, has reached its $2,500 fundraising goal for the Connie Maxwell Children's Home. 

Knights of Columbus, a long-time partner of the athletic department, met with Lander athletic director Brian Reese and representatives of Connie Maxwell to present a check for $1,220 to help Lander reach its fundraising goal. Bearcat student-athletes, coaches and administrators participated in a two-day service initiative at the children's home in August.

Lander volleyball fends off Limestone for 3-1 home victory

The Lander volleyball team began a busy home week with a non-conference win over Limestone, defeating the Saints 3-1 in front of a crowd of 340 at Finis Horne Arena on Tuesday night. The Bearcats won the match 25-10, 23-25, 25-19, 25-23.

"It wasn't the cleanest performance I've seen from our girls," said head coach Ashley White, "but I think it let them know what we need to practice over the next two days. I also saw some amazing things from our kids. To beat a team 25-10 [in the first set], that speaks volumes to the potential we have."

Gamecocks to see new, improved stadium in 2020
Following Board of Trustee approval, University of South Carolina Athletics is excited to announce that it will be pursuing state approval for $21 million in improvements to Williams-Brice Stadium with a target for completion before the 2020 season. Much of the project is focused on repurposing the areas in the stadium vacated by the football program’s move to the Cyndi and Kenneth Long Family Football Operations Center.

Lander's Baillet claims Peach Belt Conference weekly honor

Lander defender Brice Baillet has been recognized as the Peach Belt Conference's men's soccer Defender of the Week.

The award marked Lander's second straight PBC Defender of the Week, as Jordan Skeltonwon the honor last week. 

Baillet played a part in the Bearcats' 3-0 win over rival Erskine on Wednesday night, notching his first career goal and aiding the Lander defense in a shutout of the Flying Fleet, the fifth consecutive win in the rivalry for the Bearcats.

AJGA National Junior Golf Tournament comes to Greenwood

The American Junior Golf Association will come to Greenwood for the first time to host the Greenwood Junior Championship. The Links at Stoney Point will host the 54-hole national junior golf tournament, July 28 – August 1, 2019. The field will consist of 78 boys and girls (ages 12-19) from around the country and the world.

The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. AJGA alumni include Rickie Fowler, Sergio Garcia, Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Patrick Reed, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Tiger Woods, Paula Creamer, Ariya Jutanugarn, Cristie Kerr, Stacy Lewis, Brittany Lincicome, Anna Nordqvist, Inbee Park and Lexi Thompson.

Lander in third place at Cutter Creek Invitational, Hardee tied for first

SNOW HILL, N.C. – The Lander women's golf team opened the fall portion of the 2018-19 season with a first round 33-over par 321 to sit in third place at the Cutter Creek Invitational at the par-72, Cutter Creek Golf Club. 

Lander started five freshmen and is currently one of only three teams with every player inside the top-30 on the scoreboard.

DUE WEST-- The 2019 Erskine Open will be played on Friday, March 29th at Stoney Point Golf Course in Greenwood, South Carolina. There will be a shotgun start at 12:30 pm in the four-man scramble format.

Lander volleyball splits with Carson-Newman, West Alabama in Aiken

AIKEN, S.C. – The Lander volleyball team earned a win over Carson-Newman before falling to West Alabama on day one of the USC Aiken Invitational. The Bearcats defeated the Eagles 22-25, 27-25, 15-25, 25-18, 15-10, while losing to the Tigers 20-25, 25-27, 17-25. 

Lander (8-2) was in danger of falling behind 2-0 to Carson-Newman (3-2) as it trailed 22-15 in the second set before a 5-0 run pulled the Bearcats within two points. Carson-Newman responded and faced set point at 24-21, but the Bearcats used a Kaitlyn Krafka kill and a pair of Eagle errors to tie the score. The Eagles scored to reclaim the lead, but committed three consecutive errors as Lander rallied to win the set.

LU Women Volleball defeat Converse earning 6th straight win

The Lander volleyball team earned a 3-0 win over Converse in front of 318 fans in the Bearcats' home opener on Wednesday night. The Bearcats knocked off the Valkyries 25-13, 25-17, 25-23. 

Lander (7-1) was led by Reilly Kuenstler's 14 kills and a career-high 39 assists from Madilyn Reed. Katilyn Krafka posted a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs, while Hannah McManus and Boo Luther added 10 digs each.

Lander men's cross country ranked seventh in Peach Belt Conference preseason poll

The Lander men's cross country team was voted seventh in the Peach Belt Conference preseason coaches poll, it was announced Wednesday morning. The ranking marks an improvement from last year, when the Bearcats were selected eighth.

Lander picked seventh in Peach Belt Conference preseason poll

GREENWOOD – The Lander women's soccer team was picked seventh in the Peach Belt Conference Preseason Coaches Poll on Tuesday. The Bearcats received 45 points and came in behind first-place Columbus State (98 points), North Georgia (84), Flagler (81), UNC Pembroke (79), Young Harris (62) and Georgia College (60).

Lander rebounds with sweep of Mount Olive to end weekend

The Lander volleyball team rebounded from its first loss of the season with a 3-0 sweep of Mount Olive at the Augusta Tournament at Christenberry Fieldhouse on Sunday afternoon. The Bearcats took the match by scores of 25-14, 25-15, 26-24. 

Hannah Hritz had 13 kills and hit .464 on an error-free day to lead the Bearcats (2-1). Kaitlyn Krafka tallied a career-high 15 digs and added 13 kills for her first career double-double. Reilly Kuenstler hit .400 with eight kills and 1.5 blocks, while Madilyn Reed led the team with 33 assists and recorded 12 digs for a double-double, the first of her career. The Bearcats finished the day with 10 service aces, as Reed, Hannah McManus and Boo Luther each tallied three.
