A Ware Shoals man is dead after he reportedly fell down what authorities called a drainage pipe on Smith Street in Ware Shoals.
Initial reports indicate rescue workers responded to 12 Smith Street in Ware Shoals just after 1 p.m. after receiving a 911 call about the man falling into the pipe, which is about five feet below the ground.
Greenwood County Chief Deputy Coroner Steve Owings has identified the victim as 72-year-old Walter Pitts of 12 Smith St. Ware Shoals. Owings said the death has been ruled natural.
According to Owings, Pitts appears to have been having problems with his heart when he fell into the drainage pipe. The fall did not contribute to Pitts’ death, Owings said.
Ware Shoals Police Department, Greenwood County EMS and Western Laurens Volunteer Fire and Rescue responded to the scene.
