Iva man charged with killing father, shooting step-mother

An Iva man is in custody after authorities say he shot and killed his father and shot his step-mother.

Duffy Charles Grogan, 25, of 995 Sheep Leg Rd., Iva, has been charged with murder, attempted murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime in connection with the double shooting which occurred at about 2 a.m. on July 4.

According to officials with the Abbeville County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the Grogan’s residence after receiving a report of a shooting from a female caller. When deputies arrived, the door was opened by a man later identified as Grogan, who directed deputies to where Heidi Grogan, 48, Duffy Grogan’s step-mother, was calling for help. Deputies saw Heidi Grogan lying in the floor next to a man, later identified as Charles Grogan, 77. Grogan did not appear to be breathing. Deputies assisted Heidi Grogan outside to be treated by EMS. Charles Grogan was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to ACSO officials, Duffy Grogan told investigators conflicting stories about the incident. Duffy Grogan was then placed under arrest and charged in connection with the incident. A number of guns were recovered from the residence, including the weapon officials believe Duffy Grogan used in the shooting.
