Quarles family makes $2,000 donation to DUI prevention effort

The family of Deputy Scott Quarles recently made a $2,000 donation in his memory to aide in the distribution of the DUI prevention video currently under production. Deputy Quarles was killed in an accident while responding to an emergency call on June 10, 2003.

Country song written by locals continues climbing chart

A local group of songwriters are very excited that a song they recently wrote is doing well in Nashville. Five weeks ago GwdToday first posted an article about the 'Moonshine' song written by Dwayne Moore of Ninety Six, Prevo Rodgers Jr. of Saluda and Travis Smith from Woodruff. The song debuted at #33 on the ICEMAN's TOP 40 show http://theicemanscavern.com/ out of Nashville and has remained in the Top 40 now for five weeks coming in at #29 last night.

Prysmian Group to expand Abbeville County Cable Manufacturing Facility

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Prysmian Group, a global cable producer serving the energy and telecom industries, is expanding its manufacturing facility in Abbeville County. The company’s $8.2 million investment is expected to create approximately 20 new jobs once in full operation.

Ninety Six School and Piedmont Technical College form horticulture partnership

Piedmont Technical College and Greenwood District 52 have formed a partnership to establish a pathway for students at Ninety Six High School in the area of horticulture. This agreement will allow students to earn a high school diploma and college credit at the time of high school graduation and continue their studies at Piedmont Technical College.

From September 22 – October 3, 2014, MCCORMICK COUNTY ADULT ED is giving away free GED practice tests to all students who come into the center. Students can also learn about classes and other resources to help them prepare for the GED test.

Humphries Appointed NWTF Chief Conservation Officer

EDGEFIELD, S.C. - The National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) recently appointed Becky Humphries its new chief conservation officer.

Girl Scouts of South Carolina - Mountains to Midlands Sells Camp Star Fort

Greenville, SC  –  Five years since first announcing the decision to sell Camp Star Fort as part of the council’s Long-Range Program and Property Plan, the sale was completed on September 9, 2014.  It is another milestone as the Girl Scouts of South Carolina-Mountains to Midlands continues to implement its plan that is focused on reallocating its resources to strengthen its leadership programming for girls.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Emitec, an exhaust technology company and wholly owned subsidiary of Continental, is expanding its Laurens County manufacturing plant to boost capacity and serve new automotive customers. Longtime NFL Coach, Dan Reeves to speak at Lakelands FCA
Dan Reeves, who spent 23 years as an NFL head coach, will be the keynote speaker at the 10th annual Lakelands Fellowship of Christian Athletes Development Dinner. Reeves compiled a 190-165-2 record while serving as head coach of the Denver Broncos, New York Giants and Atlanta Falcons.  He played or coached in a record nine Super Bowls—five with the Dallas Cowboys, three with Denver and one with Atlanta.

Hutchins awarded scholarship from WOODMEN of the WORLD

SC WOODMEN of the WORLD field Officer, Marc Rankin presented Lauren Hutchins of Ninety Six SC with a $1,000 check.  Lauren was awarded a scholarship by WOODMEN of the WORLD based on her strengths, accomplishments, goals, and expectations. Lauren plans to use the scholarship money toward her tuition at USC this fall.  Lauren is majoring in Chemistry with the intent of a career as an anesthesiologist.

Incumbent Worker Training Funds available for Businesses, Consortiums

The Incumbent Worker Training Program (IWT) provides training resources for businesses to train their current workforces.

The resources are available to train currently employed workers in an effort to keep businesses and workers competitive; for training needed in current businesses due to expansion, new technology, retooling, new services/product lines or new organizational structuring or as part of a layoff aversion strategy; and for which the employer provides a matching contribution of no more than 25 percent of the cost of training.

Jaselyn Jennings of Waterloo, SC has just been awarded the title of South Carolina Ms Heart and SC Miss Cover, for the Miss Heart of the USA, LLC-Producers of the nationally recognized Miss Heart of the USA Pageant Program. Jaselyn is the daughter of Johnny and Rebecca Jennings of Waterloo.

The Leath Chapter of the SCCA along with Leath staff donated school supplies for seventy children at Connie Maxwell Children’s Home in Greenwood, SC. The supplies were packed into bags made by female inmates in Leath’s Prison Industry.

Police investigating robbery last Tuesday at Gingerich's

The McCormick Police Department is investigating a rare armed robbery last Tuesday afternoon.

“A black male with a ball cap and a T-shirt pulled over his head went into Gingerich’s Gas Service,” said Major Bo Willis of the McCormick Police. “The man took an undisclosed amount of cash from Joseph Gingerich and ran away.”
