Silver Haired Legislators Meet in Columbia, Set Priorities for Upcoming Year

The 142-member S.C. Silver Haired Legislature held its Annual Priority Session in Columbia Sept. 13-15 to discuss issues facing the state’s senior citizens.  

Residents aged 60 and older represent 20 percent of South Carolina’s population and are the most consistent voters. But senior issues seldom have priority standing in legislative debate.

JDLHS Alumni to Gather Oct. 8

Alumni from points near and far will gather Saturday, Oct. 8 for the 54th Alumni Homecoming and Reunion at John de la Howe School.

The special day begins with registration starting at 9 a.m. in L.S. Brice School on the John de la Howe campus. Activities run until 5:30 p.m. and include tours, food, games, a John de la Howe Alumni Association business meeting, a cookout and time for former students to share and “catch up.”

COLUMBIA -- The South Carolina Highway Patrol announces the graduation of 45 troopers from Highway Patrol Basic Classes 98 and 99 today. Among those graduates is Alexander Goode, a native of Ninety Six, SC.

Clemson scientist receives $442,000 grant to study molecular causes of autism and epilepsy

CLEMSON, South Carolina — Clemson University scientist David Feliciano recently received a three-year, $442,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health to study how alterations to a complex pathway in the developing brain cause a constellation of neurological disorders, including the simultaneous presence of autism and epilepsy.

Wanted man arrested on attempted murder charge

Joseph Edgar Akins wanted by the Laurens County Sheriff's Office for attempted murder, grand larceny and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime in connection with an incident on Sept. 12th in Gray Court, SC has been apprehended.

Gray Court man shot and stabbed; step-son charged with the crime.

The Laurens County Sheriff’s Office and emergency medical personnel responded to a call at 484 Marler Road in Gray Court this morning after receiving a call at 10:05 a.m. that a man had been possibly shot and cut.

Columbia Police seeking public help on 2015 murder case

Columbia Police Chief Skip Holbrook announces that today marks the year anniversary of a father’s shooting death on Budon Court.

The victim, who has been identified by the Richland County Coroner’s Office as Charles Kusko, was found deceased at the 1700 block of Budon Court on September 8, 2015.

A Light to the Past: Autumn Candlelight Tour Scheduled

On Saturday, October 22, Ninety Six National Historic Site will light the way to the past during the Autumn Candlelight Tour. Reenactors will present scenes from the earliest days of Ninety Six until the American Revolution along the one-mile interpretive trail lit by the soft glow of hundreds of luminaries and lanterns. Tours begin at 6:50 p.m. and depart every 10 minutes with the last tour at 8:20 p.m. Each one hour and fifteen minute tour will be accompanied by a guide who will lead the way back in time with a period-style lantern.

Altercation at Ridge Spring store leaves 1 dead, 2 in custody

On September 5, 2016 shortly after 8:00 pm at the Circle K in Ridge Spring, there was an altercation between multiple subjects in the parking lot.  During the incident, one suspect got into a car, driving into a group of people, killing Schanen Termaine Samules of Ridge Spring.  According to witnesses, a second suspect then got into the car, and they two left the scene.

Finishing first in the recent John de la Howe School Alumni Golf Tournament with the low score of 62 was this foursome comprised of, from left: Josh Baughman, Steve Sutherland, Dusty New and Doug New. The tournament was played at Hickory Knob State Park. Proceeds assist students attending John de la Howe School in McCormick.

Missing body found in Edgefield identified
On Friday September 2, 2016, the Saluda County Sheriff’s Office and Saluda County Coroner’s Office were notified by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) that the unidentified body found in Edgefield County was Saluda County’s missing person Nancy Caughman Lott.  Mrs. Lott was reported missing and was last seen on June 17, 2016 in the Ridge Spring area of Saluda County.

Police Academy graduates ready to serve Laurens County
