Longtime NFL Coach, Dan Reeves to speak at Lakelands FCA
Dan Reeves, who spent 23 years as an NFL head coach, will be the keynote speaker at the 10th annual Lakelands Fellowship of Christian Athletes Development Dinner. Reeves compiled a 190-165-2 record while serving as head coach of the Denver Broncos, New York Giants and Atlanta Falcons.  He played or coached in a record nine Super Bowls—five with the Dallas Cowboys, three with Denver and one with Atlanta.

Hutchins awarded scholarship from WOODMEN of the WORLD

SC WOODMEN of the WORLD field Officer, Marc Rankin presented Lauren Hutchins of Ninety Six SC with a $1,000 check.  Lauren was awarded a scholarship by WOODMEN of the WORLD based on her strengths, accomplishments, goals, and expectations. Lauren plans to use the scholarship money toward her tuition at USC this fall.  Lauren is majoring in Chemistry with the intent of a career as an anesthesiologist.

Incumbent Worker Training Funds available for Businesses, Consortiums

The Incumbent Worker Training Program (IWT) provides training resources for businesses to train their current workforces.

The resources are available to train currently employed workers in an effort to keep businesses and workers competitive; for training needed in current businesses due to expansion, new technology, retooling, new services/product lines or new organizational structuring or as part of a layoff aversion strategy; and for which the employer provides a matching contribution of no more than 25 percent of the cost of training.

Jennings awarded titles for Miss Heart of the USA

Jaselyn Jennings of Waterloo, SC has just been awarded the title of South Carolina Ms Heart and SC Miss Cover, for the Miss Heart of the USA, LLC-Producers of the nationally recognized Miss Heart of the USA Pageant Program. Jaselyn is the daughter of Johnny and Rebecca Jennings of Waterloo.

Leath SCCA supports students at Connie Maxwell Children's Home

The Leath Chapter of the SCCA along with Leath staff donated school supplies for seventy children at Connie Maxwell Children’s Home in Greenwood, SC. The supplies were packed into bags made by female inmates in Leath’s Prison Industry.

Police investigating robbery last Tuesday at Gingerich's

The McCormick Police Department is investigating a rare armed robbery last Tuesday afternoon.

“A black male with a ball cap and a T-shirt pulled over his head went into Gingerich’s Gas Service,” said Major Bo Willis of the McCormick Police. “The man took an undisclosed amount of cash from Joseph Gingerich and ran away.”

Slaughter named Superintendent of new Southern Campaign of the American Revolution Parks Group

ATLANTA – Southeast Regional Director Stan Austin announced today the selection of John Slaughter as superintendent of the recently created park group that includes Cowpens National Battlefield, Kings Mountain National Military Park, Ninety Six National Historic Site, and Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail. Slaughter has been superintendent of Cowpens National Battlefield and Ninety Six National Historic Site in South Carolina since June 2011. He will officially begin his new role on August 24.

Local Artist Creating A "Moonshine" Buzz

Sometimes in life you just get a shock and that’s what just happened to local singer/songwriter Prevo Rodgers from Saluda, SC. This past Monday morning Prevo was awaken to the news that a song he just released was not just playing on the radio in Nashville but to his surprise, he was contacted by THE ICEMAN himself, Bobby Golomboski.  Prevo was made aware that the song, Moonshine, was now on The Iceman’s Cavern song rotation out of Nashville and going to be eligible for the top 40 live countdown. Bikers Hit the Road for Special Olympics

On April 12th bikers helped raise $7,000.00 to help Special Olympics Athletes. The Blue Knights Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club hosted the event which started at BiLo and ended at Carolina Tavern. This event had over 90 riders from the surrounding area.

Solicitor makes deliveries to School Districts as part of Annual School Supply Drive

This past week Eighth Circuit Solicitor David M. Stumbo, along with staff members Jami Steifle and Dale Allen, hand-delivered school supplies to the local school districts of the Eighth Judicial Circuit: Abbeville District 60; Greenwood Districts 50, 51 (Ware Shoals), and 52 (Ninety Six); Laurens Districts 55 and 56 (Clinton); Newberry District 1; and Calhoun Falls Charter School.  The Laurens County Safe Home also received supplies to assist families that are served by the organization.

Savannah Valley Trail group receives grant to complete Mill Creek trestle

Savannah Valley Trail volunteer workers are making significant progress on the project, one of McCormick’s most ambitious projects in recent years. 

The Brown Trailhead is near McCormick Country Club on Barksdale Ferry Road, and the trail goes west parallel to Huguenot Road before turning north parallel to SR 7. The major project of the trail up route 7 is a new trestle over Mill Creek, and the volunteer group has applied for and received a grant for that trestle.

Commencement at Piedmont Technical College Honors Graduates

The James Medford Family Event Center at Piedmont Technical College welcomed more than 325 Piedmont Technical College graduates for two commencement ceremonies to celebrate their accomplishments.

Dr. Ray Brooks, president, welcomed graduates, family and guests to celebrate the accomplishments of the graduates.

 “To each of the graduates, you had a dream and you fulfilled it. Now, what’s your next dream?” Brooks said. “I encourage you to dream, dream big and don’t give up.”

McCormick, SC - Armed with hedge trimmers, rakes, chain saws, mowers and other lawn equipment, more than 60 volunteers showed up Saturday, Aug. 9 at John de la Howe School to assist with a campus clean-up.

Benefit program for Min. Otis McKie to be held Sept. 7
The McCormick High School Class of 1987 will sponsor a benefit program for their classmate Otis McKie who suffered a stroke in 2011 and a second stroke in January of 2012. His kidneys failed in 2013 and he is currently on dialysis daily. He is also on the kidney donor list.

Domestic Violence Awareness Workshops scheduled in honor of Jane Lanser, daughter

Safe Home and Sistercare are conducting domestic violence awareness workshops in Abbeville, Saluda and Newberry counties this month in memory of Jane Lanser and her daughter Allison Cross.

On Aug. 2, 2011, Lanser and her daughter were victims of a double murder in Jane’s home in Simpsonville.

Group aims to help individuals deal with spinal cord injury

The Greenwood Area Breeze Group is a new support group for individuals living with a spinal cord injury. The meetings will serve as a place for individuals and their family members to connect with other people with like injuries to share information, ideas, and resources while enjoying fellowship.
