CenturyLink to offer $1.4 million in Teachers and Technology grants in local markets across the country

MONROE, La. – CenturyLink, Inc. (NYSE: CTL) is connecting teachers with technology for the classroom. The CenturyLink Clarke M. Williams Foundation’s Teachers and Technology grant program opened its application process Oct. 1 for teachers in CenturyLink’s local service areas who want to innovatively implement technology in their classrooms to increase student achievement.

Lauren's Sheriff arrest three in connection with multiple vehicle break-ins

Laurens County Sheriff’s Office responded to a vehicle break-in on on Arvil Lane in Laurens where the victim had followed the suspects until deputies were able to locate and perform a traffic stop, which lead to the arrest of the three suspects. After an ongoing investigation consisting of several motor vehicle break-ins throughout the county over approximately one month’s time frame, deputies have linked these three individuals to those crimes as well through investigative means.

State Upgrades to OPCON 3, Preparations Continue for Severe Flooding

COLUMBIA, S.C. – At 12:00 p.m. the South Carolina Emergency Management Division will increase the state’s operational condition to Level 3. OpCon3 means a disaster or emergency situation is likely in our state and that state agencies have been notified to staff positions at the State Emergency Operations Center in West Columbia. The SEOC is currently operating on a 24-hour schedule for the duration of the incident.

The Miss Ninety Six High School Pageant 2015-2016 will be held Monday, October 26th in the NSHS Cafeteria facility.  Everyone attending will park in the rear of the Middle School and enter through the Middle School Cafeteria.  Please look for signs and directions when you arrive!

Calhoun County Sheriff needs help identifying shooting suspect

The Calhoun County Sheriff's Office and Crimestoppers needs your help with locating this suspect in the photo. On Oct 1, 2015 approximately 6:00 AM the unknown subject got into a verbal dispute with victim at shell gas station with the Bojangles inside located at 110 chestnut street in Orangeburg, SC. The unknown subject was seen leaving out in a dark color Ford Explorer same time as the victim.

As Hurricane Joaquin reached a Category 4 strength with 130 mph winds, residents throughout South Carolina and up the coast should prepare for heavy rains.  According to WYFF News 4 Meteorologist Chris Justus, no matter where Joaquin makes landfall, it’s going to cause disastrous levels of rain in the Carolinas.

Hundreds of Job Seekers Attend Job Fair

The Greenwood Mall parking lot appeared as if it were Black Friday sales weekend, but today is all about careers.  With over 80 employers this was the perfect opportunity for those seeking jobs to get connected immediately. 

“It’s a great crowd” said Upper Savannah Council of Governments Workforce Development Administrator Sandra Johnson.  “Looking around I am impressed by so many that are dressed for success. 

Johnson also explained how many seem enthusiastic to talk with employers.  “One guy was here an hour early to ensure he was the first to talk with a particular employer” explained Johnson.

The job fair is happening now at the Greenwood Mall and will be there until 3 p.m. today.  Click here for more details and a schedule of events today.

Girl Scouts starting back in Ware Shoals

After several years absence, Girl Scouts will be returning to Ware Shoals under Troop Leader Jessica Smith. Smith, a Ware Shoals native.  Smith is hoping to add to the opportunities school-aged females in the community are afforded. "If we want our girls to grow up to make a difference in the world, they must be given the opportunity to discover who they are, what they care about, and what talents they have. It is critical that they connect with others and take action to make the world a better place."

Use of Electronic Cigarettes to be Subject to Same Rules as Smoking Tobacco in National Parks

Washington - National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis today issued a policy memorandum prohibiting the use of electronic smoking devices in all places where tobacco smoking is prohibited in national parks.

“Protecting the health and safety of our visitors and employees is one of the most critical duties of the National Park Service,” said Director Jarvis. “We are therefore extending the restrictions currently in place protecting visitors and employees from exposure to tobacco smoke to include exposure to vapor from electronic smoking devices.”

Strataforce is a new company that established in Greenwood this past April.  Strataforce, privately owned, is a division of The Greene Group based out of Charlotte, NC and has been in business over 20 years now.  They were recently featured in the Charlotte Business Journal for being No. 1 for having the largest number of employees in women owned company in the Charlotte area; currently at 4,210.

Palmetto Power 8u go undefeated to win Championship

We went undefeated on Saturday, 9/12 winning the ASA Fall Championship in Spartanburg, SC.

The 8u Palmetto Power softball team went undefeated this past weekend to win the ASA Fall Championship in Spartanburg, SC.  With only a few returning players, this team is made up by several new and young players but are stepping up like champs.  Thanks for everyone’s support throughout our team and community.
