Man airlifted after fall from tree

A man was airlifted Friday afternoon following a fall from a tree.

Officials say the man fell about 30 feet out of a tree just before noon on Friday, fracturing many of the bones on the right side of his body. It was unclear why the man was in the tree.

The LifeFlight helicopter landed at the Piggly Wiggly located on the corner of S.C. Highway 72/221 and S.C. Highway 246.

Several volunteer fire departments, including Coronaca Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene, responded to the scene in addition to Greenwood County EMS and the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office.

The man’s condition is unknown at this time.

Mr. Shirley is a Deacon at Coronaca Baptist Church and just recently went on a mission trip to help build a home for a family. We had prayer for Mr. Shirley at church Sunday and we missed him and his family so much. Mr. Shirley is one of the best people I know in Greenwood and at Lake Greenwood. I pray God heals his body quickly. We love you Byrd! Brother in Christ Scott Prevatte

I certainly hope he has a speedy recovery. Bless his heart, I know that hurt. He must be built "Ford Tough" or is it "Chevy" anyway, he was tough to withstand that accident. Glad that his son didn't get hurt too.

The man in the tree was my brother-in-law Terry Shirley, He and his son were trimming limbs from a very large oak tree. The last limb that he tried to cut was very large and fell to the ground bounced up and crushed the ladder he was standing on. Terry fell about 25 to 30 feet while holding the chain saw. He landed on his right side fracturing his right wrist, right hip and right shoulder. He under went over 8 hours of surgery at Greenville Hospital. His recovery will be a long one with much therapy involved. Please keep him and our family in your prayers!
