Man assaults family, resist arrest

Greenwood County Sheriff Deputies arrested a man after he came home Monday agitated and aggressive, assaulted his parents and resisted arrest.

Gregory Dale Fallaw, 40 of 104 Miller Road, Hodges SC was arrested and charged with Assault and battery 3rd degree and resisting arrest.

Man arrested after knocking another man out

Greenwood County Sheriff Deputies responded to a fight that occurred on Saturday, Sept 15 at Harris Landing.  Witnesses say a man sucker punched another knocking him out for several minutes.

Thomas Oscar Longshore Jr., 39 of 140 Kingston Road, Greenwood was arrested and charged with 2nd degree assault and battery.

According to the police report, the victim was at Harris Landing talking to his estranged wife and her brother sucker punched him for no reason.  By the time Deputies arrived, both parties had left the scene.  The victim then called and requested to file charges against Longshore.

Tourism Related Funds Available for Non-profit Organizations

Each year accommodations taxes collected from Greenwood County’s hotels and motels are returned to the County for the purpose of promoting tourism, cultural events, and other related projects.  The Greenwood County Accommodations Tax commission has responsibility for soliciting requests from non-profit organizations, and making recommendations to County Council as to how the funds available should be prioritized.

Man shot over money, second person now in custody

Greenwood County Sheriff Office responded to a shooting incident on Parkway Court on Sept 3, 2018.  When they arrived they found a man had been shot in the groin.  The victim identified two people involved and one was arrested that day, the other has now been arrested.

Despite Florence, Shrine Club still hosting Oyster Roast, but at new indoor location

Although we are looking to receive much rainfall from hurricane Florence, the 3rd Annual Shrine Club Oyster Roast will still take place at a new location indoors.  They announced today that their event is moved to 4412 Ninety Six Hwy, Ninety Six SC (Large Building Behind Parks & Rec Fields).  To get there, drive down the road beside the ball fields and you will see the building.  This is a large indoor facility that will allow everyone to enjoy the great food and entertainment.

It’s a great thing, but unfortunately all tickets for the event have been sold.  So be sure to let your friends with tickets know about the new location and we will see you all there.

Eaton Corporation in Greenwood recently presented the Piedmont Technical College (PTC) Foundation with a check for $45,000 to continue its steadfast support for engineering technology programs at the college. Eaton has donated to the program every year since 2004.

Students focus on emergency management skills as Hurricane Florence heads toward the East Coast

As forecasters and emergency preparedness experts keep their eyes on a hurricane heading towards the U.S. East Coast and two tropical storms developing behind it in the Atlantic Ocean, a group of 23 undergraduates are focused on learning the skills needed when responding to a disaster.

Led by Dr. Matthew Malone, assistant professor of Political Science and Homeland Security at Lander University, the emergency management course teaches students about the roles that local, state, and federal agencies play during catastrophic disasters such as hurricanes, floods, tornados, wildfires, earthquakes, and acts of terrorism.

Eaton Corp. donates thousands to help nursing and science students at Lander University

GREENWOOD, S.C. - Power management company Eaton Corporation recently donated $9,000 to help support students of Lander University. The Eaton Corp. Charitable Contribution award establishes a scholarship that will assist students in financial need who are pursuing a science degree in Lander's College of Science and Mathematics, or a nursing degree from the William Preston Turner School of Nursing.

Greenwood man arrested stealing vehicle

On Sept 9, 2018 Greenwood County Sheriff Deputies spotted a stolen 1989 GMC truck at the Promise Land Grocery on Hwy 10.  As the Deputy pulled up behind the truck, three black males standing by the truck took off running.   Deputy was able to detain one.  Aaron Jerode Brooks, 18 of 1310 Drew Ave, Greenwood was arrested and charged with possession of a stolen vehicle.

Petsmart Charities donate over $45,000 to Humane Society of Greenwood

The Humane Society of Greenwood (HSOG) has received a new $45,905 grant from PetSmart Charities, the leading funder of animal welfare in North America. The grant will support a healthier environment in the new HSOG Adoption Center so it can continue helping homeless pets in the Greenwood, SC area.

Man jumps into lake to avoid arrest over stolen vehicle

On Sept 5, 2018 Greenwood County Sheriff Officers arrested two people after locating a stolen van at a gas station.

Charles Chandler Raines, 23 of 4822 Hwy 25 N, Hodges and Shelie Kaye Sadler, 23 of 100 Bluff Road, Greenwood were both arrested.

On September 5, 2018 the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Enforcement Division conducted a traffic stop on Hwy 34 and ended up arresting a mother and son on multiple drug charges.

Increased Meals on Wheels Means Increased Need for Volunteers

Piedmont Agency on Aging is taking a big swipe at it’s lengthy waiting list for Meals on Wheels.   “We’re adding 130 new Meals on Wheels recipients to our program in the next two months,” stated Kathy Hendricks-Dublin, CEO. “As we reach more homebound seniors, we’re making an urgent appeal to the community.   We need more Meals on Wheels Volunteers to make this happen!”

Community Initiatives, Inc. Opens Second Free Clinic Location

Community Initiatives, Inc. opened the satellite site of the free clinic, La Clinica Gratis on Saturday, June 30, 2018 at the Flat Rock A.M.E. Church in Abbeville County.  The clinic provides free health assessments, point of care testing, nurse triage, preventative medical care, medication prescriptions, and referral & educational services.  The referral services include partnerships with United Christian Ministries of Abbeville County Free Medical Clinic and the Anderson Free Clinic for patients who live in the services areas of these clinics.  All three clinics are members of the South Carolina Free Clinic Association.
